It is all very nice, sleek, and intuitive but there is something about the reassurance with having old analogue gauges that i dont get with glass displays. It feels less ad less like the pilot is actually flying and more like he/she is just being guided by a computer who is actually doing all the work. despite all that this new helicopter is very exciting and it all looks very cool!

Questions... 1. Why use a WiFi interface for iPad connectivity? When there is a dock for power why not use the physical interfa e for ethernet connectivity instead? Now maybe i'm showing my lack of Apple knowledge but last time did dev work on an iOS device ethernet was still supported in thunderbolt. 2. Since the HX50 is for private use would it not make sense to provide tail and ground cams for rearward/gear clearance views to assist the neck craning you should be doing anyway? 3. I am starting to wonder about the connectivity security for the HDC and other embedded systems. This is my wheel house if you recall... nearly 20 years between RIM(BlackBerry)/NCR and now Gryphon Secure. I assume there is 5G RAN support and no doubt there will be OTA updates. Could you and Jason plan to discuss the security in the design of it all? Root of trust, attestation etc. I would be surprised if this isn't well fought through and managed when everything else is so well thought through. Miss you all and hope to be back soon.

Well, the first "bluescreen" if you know what I mean will put everything back into perspective. As much as I like the looks of this, with the software quality of many of those nice UIs out there you can live if worst case you reboot once more. It's a completely different thing if your life depends on it. The reality checks will be: - will this ever make it to the market? - will it be reliable enough in real life use/abuse scenarios? - what will it cost when all those hurdles have been overcome? - will a turbine by then still be acceptable or replaced by a fuel cell / battery hybrid?

I am friends with a lot of software engineers and software architects. Their favourite saying is "I don't know why it works but it works" and many don't put a lot of faith in other peoples code. This saying is what is going to keep me from ever buying a self driving car and it can certainly apply to what you are saying with the bluescreen of death in terms of this cockpit.

@DanFrederiksen4 ай бұрын
You were onto the right thing, you could say it's a Tesla-esque display, decent size displays, not the painfully archaic instruments too common in aviation. However try to see that all the legacy dial thinking has to go as well. What they were showing here is old round dials cluttering over the synthetic vision (which I think they meant to represent reality, not actually synthetic vision) and speed and altitude is not something you show with dials. Those are just numbers. If you wanted to represent a trend like climb that can simply be a small square next to the altitude with scrolling lines, which is very intuitive to relate to even though a busy altimeter number is quite telling on its own. It's basically only gliders that need the fast rate view. Although a hovering helicopter might like it too. Those 3 circles all have to go completely away. What matters is the synthetic vision. It becomes your windshield in zero visibility. Would you want a distant cluttered 7" windshield in an aircraft? or as big and clear as possible. So yes it's a bit more modern thinking but they are still cobwebbed by old junk that has to go. But he's doing a lot right and I'm sure he'll come around on avionics too. It's particularly great that they are making their own turbine engine. Because it's actually a pretty simple device and the douchebags that make them know only 7 figures. Indeed Hill has a video where he says the entire helicopter can be super cheap to make and he is right. Carbon fiber has a reputation for being super expensive but the cloth costs about as much as you pay for clothing fabric in a store. Denim helicopter doesn't sound that expensive. Fairly negligible in typical turbine helicopter prices. That typically don't even use carbon. For a helicopter like theirs, it might have 10k worth of carbon fiber, depending on what price they get it at. And how thin layers they use. Thinner is more expensive per weight for some reason. Seems to be more convention than reason.
@k538473 жыл бұрын
Is this going to be FAA IFR capable? Regardless, the synthetic vision behind the instruments certainly seems lifesaving in an inadvertent IFR situation. Be interesting to see if anyone can do some tests to show if is really helpful in IIFR situation.

I think it's cool as hell! But it bothers me when you have pilots that NEED a helicopters ui to tell him that the helicopter needs to land or walk the pilot through an emergency situation. That's what we train for as students and continue to learn for as pilots. Just a little concerning that there ARE pilots out there that need shit like that.
@chriscox55683 жыл бұрын
What if an EMP goes off and shuts down your electronics and your whole helicopter you'll fall out of the sky and crash. Don't say it can't happen. That technology is pretty impressive and it'll make your mouth water but a totally analog helicopter will keep flying.
@sheldonjanzen34833 жыл бұрын
I think too many people will be depending on the computer assist. This will create lazy pilots and lots of crashes. The artificial video will lag out or clip out or not show something like a powerline and people will crash during ifr being too confident. Modern electronics are a nightmare in the trucking industry i can only imagine how bad it is in aviation. Youll be coming in to land and...update required...blue screen of death. As cool as it is, this would make me think twice before jumping into a machine sooo dependant on electronics. Im just a simulator pilot, but my 2 cents is that relying more and more on computers is a bad idea. Like people who play video games with aim assist all the time. Complete panic and chaos when theyr without it. I think better training is a smarter investment and pilot awareness is precedent over electronic babysitters.
@corail533 жыл бұрын
Is this really going to make for a safer pilot though? Skills and practice make for the best pilots with tech just being there to help, when tech starts to take over the skills and people become reliant on systems then things can go south real fast when those systems fail. It's like driving cars - we all say people are bad drivers and the only reason they are bad is because the education system for learning to drive was crap. If driving school was as involved as pilot school we would all have a lot safer roads but now we trying to solve that problem by just getting rid of the skill through automation.
