Both this video and the great comments are going to take a while to digest. One last thing, as someone who used to design typefaces it’s always hard hearing them called fonts. But that’s what the menu says thanks to Mr. Jobs.

For your mixing-tip: if you CTRL-S, expand audio, on the big compound clip, you can actually mix the different roles (dialog, effects, music...). For example throw the limiter on the dialogue, compressor on music and equalize the music so it doesn't affect the dialogue so much.

Absolutely great tip! Since I’m usually doing things quick and dirty for KZbin I often master it to my ear to balance tracks in the main timeline, then just lift the whole thing on the compound clip. Of course your suggestion is the correct way to do it though

I made a couple keyboard shortcuts for things I use often and it has seriously cut down my editing time. 1) Created a shortcut for "Automatic speed." So when I use the command it takes the clip and slows it down until it matches the framerate of the video file you are editing. So if I shot in 60fps and my project is in 24fps then it will slow it down to 40%. Really useful for B roll sequences and b roll heavy project so you don't have to drag you mouse up to the drop down menu. 2) Created a shortcut to silence the audio on a clip. Its great for if you or your videographer recorded audio into you b roll that you won't be using or if you are just cutting something to music.

Oh man! I've been using FCP for over 10 years (on and off and not professionally) and 2 min into your video I learned something I wished I learnt maaaany years ago!.. haha. In other words, I've been using the Blade Speed tool very inefficiently.. Your way of easing in and out of the speed ramp and also (this is the big one) that you can edit the source frame! 🤯 THANK YOU!

Your noise reduction method can be simplified further if you have Logic. Open Logic, drag your video clip into Logic, press shift+W to send it to RX (you may have to map this in the sample editor menu in Preferences), perform any noise reduction you need, Cmd+S to save, Cmd+Q to quit, which takes you back to your logic session, then go to File - Movie - Export audio to movie. Bam, now you have noise reduction encoded directly into the source video file and don't need to create any extra audio files.

Tyler... wow! I'm not even a FCPX user, but I always want to switch back to it... you made that way more tempting! You rocked my world with izotope rx8. I bought it as soon as I watched this. It just happen to hit right as I was going back through an old video series (that IS in FCPX) that I wanted to clean up and use on my premium video site. I used a rode video micro a little too far away... but rx8 cleaned it up in the most incredible way. The way you demonstrated it here is very similar to my results, so I can affirm that you posted a very real-world demonstration.

I feel so justified that so many of these are ones I adopted naturally. I did not know about the gradual speed ramp though. I’m so excited to try that next time as it smoothly ramps up to full speed which has always been a battle of mine. Command Shirt R on footage in the timeline will reveal it in finder, you can skip reveal in browser. Tyler did it correctly if you’re only right clicking though.

I agree with the noise reduction... its poopy. I have found that using a slight voice isolation on noisy backgrounds and then compounding the clip together, then once again added a little more voice isolation along with loudness amount and uniformity seems to work the same wonders without compressing or limiting. I always feel the limiter takes away from the quality slightly. Just my little work around to explore.

I recently found out that if you want a transition to affect only the secondary timeline (without disturbing the primary timeline) all you need to do is to come from a clip with zero opacity (does not work with muted clips). Comes in really handy for example if you want to slide something in the frame from the side...just use a slide transition. This was my first edit using this method. The climbing holds are "animated" with slide transitions which also provide great motion blur without using much rendering power. /watch?v=0Vx6gtJkL9w

If you need a wav file, it might be faster to just export(share) master file (command + E) and choose audio only, or better yet just make a wav file destination for the share menu(add destination).

option T is something I've missed out and I will definitely use it a lot more. I found opening some heavy taxing plugins like iZotope inside FCPX usually ended up with rainbow circle. I thought latest m1 max MBP would've performed better and I guess not? I guess 8:20 your procedure is way to go until apple FCP developer do something about it.

Audio Transitions and Compound Clips were my major takeaways. So good! I’m using CCs so much now that I made it a straight “G” shortcut. I did the same for “Z” since I’m a newbie and I undo frequently, then made redo “Command Z”! 🙃

For people who are doubting FCP, it was the standard before Premiere in the industry. It was let down due to the major changes of FCP X that created too many issues and because macs lineup was less appealing, but in reality, you will find Avid much more than Premiere in pro studios. Also, features such as Parasites where all edited on FCP X. FCPX presets are so ridiculous, if you look closely, there's one in the 3D section what was totally use for the earlier white, 3D Netflix logo animation!! :O

Sweet video, thanks for the info. 8:05 - for this I use a easy plug-in called NS1 by Waves. I bought it for Logic Pro X but it shows up in FCPX as well so I thought that was cool. However, I know your work is top quality so this wont work as great for you but for the rest of the people out there like me, maybe this can help you get rid of your unwanted noise with just two clicks. (Plug-in was $40, super worth it for me). Thanks again for the video just wanted to share the little knowledge I have in the comments for us small timers.

Gotta say, the noise removal/Voice Isolation effect in the latest FCP update is flawless imo. No post-processing artifacts**, it removed a LOUD HVAC noise and, along with the usual voice EQ, sounded great to my ears. **I only heard minor audio weirdness in the vocal coming from off camera. Which isn't meant to be heard anyway in this project.

One improvement on the audio master tip, if you make a compound clip of everything at the end, detach audio, then export that into auphonic (free) you can professionally normalize just a bit better than the built in apple limiter :) an extra step, but good audio is worth it!

you don't have to use compressor to export a wav file. you can export a clip directly in final cut as wav. you also dont need to make a compound clip. you can export a range. you can make a range by selecting a clip in your timeline and pressing the X key then dragging the handles on either end to make the range bigger or smaller. So you can actually remove a few of the steps you made to do the same thing and so making your workflow even faster
