I lived in KL almost two years and didn’t even see half of the largest malls during my time there. My favourite is probably Suria KLCC esp. the food court, a lot of luxury brands but also often good sales on "other brand names" such as sunglasses (bottom floor). Low Yat Plaza for good deals on electronics, esp. camera gear in KL has very competitive prices (always shop around and ask for the “best price”), also good deals on second hand stuff in Berjaya Times Square (lvl 6). Others definitely worth to visit are Mid Valley / The Gardens and 1 Utama, also could be worth to do excursion to IOI City Mall in Putrajaya which should be the second largest mall in the world at the moment.

There are malls like this in the US... Maybe no decent ones in Cali, but in DC (Tyson's), NYC/NJ (Paramus), Philly (King of Prussia), and even Minneapolis (Mall of America) they have decent malls. Any specific mall I'm not as impressed with in SEA as much as the fact that they have dozens of malls, all nearby, full of people, and tons of great dining options. For me, that's the key. I think part of the issue is that in places in the US where the weather is never too bad, there's no need to seek AC/Heat or no rain in the mall...

14:00 Certainly, let's delve into a detailed explanation of the characteristics of Malay people in Malaysia in a modern context, emphasizing why it's crucial not to confuse them with other ethnic groups: 1. **Cultural Diversity**: Malays are an integral part of Malaysia's diverse cultural landscape, alongside Chinese, Indian, and indigenous communities. They contribute significantly to the country's rich tapestry of traditions, languages, and customs. 2. **Malay Identity**: The Malay identity is deeply rooted in the country's history and heritage. Malays often identify themselves based on cultural, linguistic, and religious affiliations. Islam, for example, plays a central role in Malay society, influencing everything from daily practices to social norms. 3. **Physical Features**: While Malays, like any ethnic group, exhibit a range of physical characteristics, there are certain features that are often associated with them. These may include darker skin tones, wavy or curly hair, and facial features such as almond-shaped eyes and high cheekbones. 4. **Language**: The Malay language, also known as Bahasa Malaysia, is the national language of Malaysia and serves as a unifying force among Malaysians of all ethnic backgrounds. Malays typically use Malay in their daily interactions, although many are also proficient in English and other languages. 5. **Cultural Practices**: Malay culture is vibrant and diverse, encompassing various traditional customs and practices. These may include traditional dances like the joget and zapin, traditional clothing such as the baju kurung and baju kebaya, and culinary delights like nasi lemak and rendang. 6. **Religious Observance**: Religion holds significant importance in Malay society, with the majority of Malays being Muslims. Islamic practices and values often permeate various aspects of daily life, from greetings and rituals to dietary restrictions and dress codes. 7. **Social Etiquette**: Malays adhere to certain social norms and etiquettes that reflect their cultural values and respect for hierarchy and harmony. These may include gestures of respect such as bowing slightly when greeting elders, using polite language forms, and observing modesty in dress and behavior. Why it's important not to confuse Malays with other ethnic groups: - **Respect for Diversity**: Malaysia prides itself on its multiculturalism and diversity. Failing to distinguish between different ethnic groups can undermine the richness of this diversity and perpetuate stereotypes. - **Cultural Sensitivity**: Mistaking Malays for other ethnic groups can lead to misunderstandings and cultural insensitivity. Each ethnic group has its own unique customs, traditions, and sensitivities that should be respected and acknowledged. - **Recognition of Identity**: Malays have a distinct identity and cultural heritage that should be recognized and celebrated. Confusing them with other ethnic groups can diminish the importance of their contributions to Malaysian society. In conclusion, understanding the characteristics of Malay people in Malaysia is essential for promoting cultural awareness, sensitivity, and respect within the diverse fabric of Malaysian society. Recognizing and appreciating the uniqueness of each ethnic group fosters unity, harmony, and mutual understanding in the nation's multicultural landscape.

So sorry this comment got away from me! I really appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed information. This helps me learn and treat other cultures with respect, while still integrating and embracing. Thanks so much!
@missxhu10 ай бұрын
14:00 It's crucial to learn and distinguish the physical characteristics of Malays from other ethnicities in Malaysia, such as Bangladeshis, Vietnamese, Myanmarese, and others, to avoid confusion and misidentification. Understanding the distinct physical attributes of Malays, including features like skin tone, facial structure, and attire such as the hijab worn by many Malay women, enables accurate recognition and appreciation of the diverse cultural landscape within Malaysia. This knowledge is essential for fostering mutual understanding, respect, and inclusivity among Malaysia's multiethnic population and for effectively navigating social interactions and cultural contexts within the country.
@WhereisBrad10 ай бұрын
I agree completely. I actually come from the US where people are sensitive in a specific way. In the US, to assume someone's ethnicity can actually be offensive. So if I was to ask "are you from Bangladesh?", that could be taken as offensive! I think I was trying to be cautious and go with the safe question of "malaysia" since that was the safe bet, even though I knew I was wrong.
@missxhu10 ай бұрын
14:00 To avoid confusion between Malaysians of Malay ethnicity and other nationalities residing in Malaysia, it's crucial to understand that individuals from countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar, and others are not native to Malaysia. Therefore, distinguishing features of the Malay ethnic group become significant for accurate identification. Learning about the physical appearance of Malaysians of Malay descent is essential because it aids in recognizing their unique characteristics, such as attire choices like the hijab for Malay women, which are indicative of local culture. Delving deeper into understanding Malay culture in its contemporary context is necessary to effectively communicate and engage with local Malaysians rather than foreigners from other countries. Thus, it's imperative to engage with the local community to gain a comprehensive understanding of Malaysian culture and avoid misidentification or misunderstandings.
@WhereisBrad10 ай бұрын
I agree completely! And thank you for the information. I’m used to where I’m from in the US where it can be offensive to assume someone’s country. So I was worried about asking even though I knew he was from Bangladesh. Regardless I have a lot to learn and love the process

That guy who said he was malaysian in pavilion was not malaysian though. He's most likely Bangladesh who's been working here for several years. Anyway, I'm Malaysian, but I've never actually been inside Pavilion. My gf told me if I ever walked into Pavilion, she would dump me. She still has a grudge over them dismantling her school to build another shopping mall. Look up Bukit Bintang Girls School if you want to know more on that.

the yellow blue red flag is the flag of Kuala Lumpur itself, malaysia has 13 states and 3 federal territories and kuala lumpur is one of the 3 federal territories, the malaysian flag has 14 stripes 1 for each state and the last stripe represents the 3 federal terrtitories which is kuala lumpur, labuan and putrajaya fun fact all of malaysian administration used to be run on kuala lumpur but it has been moved to putrajaya due to overcrowding but kuala lumpur is still the malaysian capital

Hi Brad, Malaysia is comprising 3 main races Malay 60%, Chinese13% and Indian 11% about plus ethnics Borneo. For Malaysian Indians about 11% so little bit tricky becoz at glance when it mix with Bangladeshi. It look like we have more in Indian. But as Malaysian we know who is whose. Even for others like Indonesian look like Malays, mainland China also look like Malaysian Chinese but when they start talking we can know them. It just preety sad if foreigner miss judge Malaysian. Becoz a lot of Southeast Asian people look alike.😊
@WhereisBrad10 ай бұрын
Ya I know what you mean. Part of me can guess, but in America it can be very offensive to guess someone’s race, so I might say Malaysian when I know they’re not, so that they can correct me. But it seems like people are not as sensitive so I don’t need to do that. But there’s another part of me who just doesn’t know lol, so that’s why I need to keep traveling!! Thanks for the helpful info!!

My suggestion is to just ask anyone around you if you're unsure/curious about anything. Not just the vendors/shop owners, Malaysians are generally friendly & helpful people. If you happen to ask someone who isn't English affluent, then just ask the next person. I believe you'll have a better / more informed experience if you do so. If you wanna head down to Petaling Jaya (PJ), I'll guide you around. Just let me know. Cheers buddy! Have a great trip.. 🍻
