Thanks for the comment mate. we also used home made strops for a long time. They work fine but a nice looking strop does compliment a sharpening kit. Also good quality leather makes stropping faster and enhances the durability. Thanks!

Seems to be allot of controversy in the comment thread here. I'm interested in learning to sharpen my knives and just picked up 3 whetstones. Shapton 1000, and 2000 grit, and Nawina 3000 grit. I haven't spent allot of time on the stones, but clearly could see the strop method you demonstrated was highly effective. Thanks for the video.

thanks a lot mate. You have a great set of stones. both shapton and naniwa have high quality stones and should last you many years. sharpening to 3000 grit and stropping afterwards is enough to make your knives crazy sharp.

Hey Knife Guys, nice Video which confirms my results when I am using my 1000 grid stone in combination with a leather finish. l guess it doesn't make sense to buy finer stones, because the result is already ok for shaving and that is everything you need. :-)
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 8 жыл бұрын
There is a difference though. I edge finished on a higher grit stone will last longer. Scratches from a low grit stone will remain after stropping. These will be weak spots on the apex where the knife will dull quicker. However, for the starting knife collector or sharpener a 400,1000 + strop kit will provide a affordable set with good results. thanks for the comment mate!

I use a 14 dollar smiths diamond stone that has (I think) 400 grit and 750 or so grit on the fine side, then I use craftsman level 6 fine sharpening compound, it gets a decent mirror edge and I can carve or split hairs with my knifes if I spend an hour on the strop, is this a good way to sharpen? I feel it takes too long but it only costs me a total of 20 dollars. I have a little bit of money to spend but not too much, maybe 100 dollars, can anyone recommend any stones or compounds to shorten my sharpening time down? I would like to spend less than 30 minutes, Thanks
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
I personally really like bark river compound. The black compound and the white compound are pretty aggressive so they strop pretty fast. They aren't really expensive either. I you really want to fats forwards the sharpening process it's going to cost you a lot as you'll need some high quality hard sharpening stones in different grits. You could also resort to something like the Work Sharp that has up to 12.000 grit sharpening belts. I personally don't recommend sharpening on belts as you need to be pretty skilled in it to keep a good edge. Things go wrong fast on belts. I'd recommend starting off with the bark river compounds and see how they'll work for you. There is no wrong way of sharpening in my opinion as long as the result is good.

Dutch Bushcraft Knives do you need to wash your hands after using them or wash your knife? Is it dangerous if small amounts (dust) is ingested or inhaled? I'm very worried as I contacted the people at knivesandtools since I purchased it some time ago, they said it wasn't toxic, the the compound itself is dangerous as it contains small pieces of metal, or chromium oxide which is strong enough to scratch metal. I am very confused.
@Orzel_Knives
@Orzel_Knives 7 жыл бұрын
sharpening anything is taking away material. The finer the grit the smaller and smaller the scratches are, meaning that they also aren't as deep, hence why a 2000 grit finish is almost mirror-like and leaves many less scratches compared to 400. Polishing compound is what you use to achieve a much finer finish, through tiny particles which compare to much higher grits (3 micron = roughly 10000 grit) than you could get on a stone or sandpaper, so whereas on a stone you can (without spending $300+ for one high quality stone) usually get to about 5000 grit, the polishing compound paired with the leather creates an extremely fine abrasive and finish which comes to a grit many times higher than that of the stone.

If a Mora won't shave you cleanly after using a 1000 grit stone, the problem is not with the stone, it's with you. In fact, if a knife won't shave you after using a 600 grit stone, the problem is still you. There's an old, old saying, "If you can't get a knife razor sharp with a course stone, you need to sit down and learn how to sharpen a knife from the first step. Even with course stones, a knife should shave you before you get anywhere close to a strop.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Thanks for your comment. We do disagree with you on this. It is possible to get a knife shaving on a lower grit stone but then the angle must be very low and the grind has to be flat. We don't favor that and like an angle that is a bit higher (around 25°) and we like a convex grind. also in older times alot of the knives had steels that where alot softer. That in combination with the lower angle made it possible to shave with lower grit stones. Nevertheless dont feel shy to make a video to disproof what we have to say. We'd love to see you demonstrate your theory. Regards, DBK

We gave it a very quick sharpening job to show how effective stropping can be. There was nothing wrong with the sharpening job. 1000 grit creates a large burr. Before stropping this burr catches the paper.

Ethan Jacobson simply put using a strop just removes any burrs left from sharpening. Since when you are sharpening you push the Apex back and forth, no matter what side you end on, the Burr will still be there on the opposite side. So using a strop will reduce that Burr even further, therefore sharpening the knife further. Yes you can shave with it, but it isn't as sharp as it could be by a long shot.
