Great video. Was planning to open up my (daughter's) Nextbase 212 dashcam, to try and fix it. Been playing up, and think the battery needs replacing as only lasts around 10-30 seconds on battery power. This video was great to view before I opened the dashcam up, so that I could see what to expect. Brilliant. One thing I did though. As a "hobbyist" skill with a soldering iron was concerned about soldering a very small circuit board. So instead of removing the old battery (as you did) with a soldering iron, then re-soldering the new battery direct to the board, I cut the cable of the old battery, and then was able to solder the new battery cable to the old cables still attached the board, hence easier to do and no risk of bridging the solder on the very small contacts on the board. One hint, if anyone else thinks thats a good way to avoid soldering to the board. Cut the cable on the old battery at different points, so that the cables are slightly different lengths. That way it minimises the risk of the cables shorting, when the new battery (cables) are soldered to the cables left. Also, I put heat shrink tube over the cables, so that I can ensure they are insulated from each other. If you dont have heat shrink tube, wrap the cable joints you have soldered in electrical tape. This has fixed the dashcam as if new.. for £13 (for a battery - off the link) its far cheaper than a new dash cam.

@@Martysworkshop I forgot to ask you if the terminals on the circuit board are marked, positive and negative. I have often striped wires without taking note of which terminal was positive or neg. A mistake here could be disastrous.

Thanks! If users get an unstable unit that goes on and off when plugged in, before you try the battery, just make sure the camera is firmly shoed to the windscreen connector - it can often work a very small way out and loose power connection intermittently. You may be lucky and not even need to spend £10!

Ive had my 312gw for about 3 years now and the battery is completely dead. Just changed it for a 370mh one, cost £6 off ebay. Should do the job just fine. Thanks for this, pretty much the same.

Hi bud watched Yr video very helpful but might I add when up ending board if you snip the wires from battery short of solders you can remove battery it won't then be in your way you can then remove battery completely then not hanging on wires you can also see the polarities of the ends on the solder fit battery glue down then solder the ends on to the board so it's not hanging on the wires. Reassemble unit hope this method makes it easier for the novice cheers tony

Just done mine, mine has the magnetic powered mount which requires another 2 screws to be removed which holds the magnet and contacts. No problem but thought I would mention it

How is the LCD screen heat resistance of this camera? have the Nextbase 222, and today with temperatures near 100° F outside i got into the car, and when i turned it on the camera screen displayed all white, barely being able to distinguish anything that was in front of the camera lens, but, it started working back to normal a few minutes after being on. What could have caused this? i'm sure these cameras should be able to take on much higher temperatures if i'm correct.

Diolch yn Fawr Marty. Looks like my same model dash camera need a new battery. It will not take a charge and just shows the message "Low Battery. Please connect car charger". So I attempted to charge the battery using the USB DC-IN port just to check that the connection in the car was not the problem. No success. Maybe the one of the battery connection cables has become detached?

@@Martysworkshop I was wrong that it would not charge via the USB DC-IN port. I'd used a non charging USB outlet of my Laptop. The battery is now fully charged via a mains connected USB adapter. The problem of the battery not charging when connected in my car may have been because I've rarely used my car during Lockdown and the dash cam battery had run flat.

Yea the only fault is that the time and date reverts to its erlyest setting every time it is powered off

@@Martysworkshop these battery replacements are never as good as the original factory battery

It would be far better and much quicker to leave the factory soldering undisturbed. Remove the old battery by snipping the wires, leaving the wires as long as possible still connected to the board. Expose the ends of these wires and those on the new battery, slide a length of heat shrink over, and simply twist the wires on the new battery to the existing ones. Warm up the heat shrink, and you have a secure connection in half the time without worrying if the new soldering is going to hold or short out

Honestly I'd just replace the whole thing to a completely different brand. I've had my nextbase (G22GW) for only 3 months and already the internal battery is shot and doesn't hold a charge. I can unmount and power it on to do anything with it.

For the 412GW two of the screws inside are hidden behind small black foam pads which have a sticky back. Simply pull the foam pads off to reveal the screws. 👍

Evidently a common fault; I’ve got the same issue on an old NextBase 402 that was replaced by something else. I might have a go at replacing it’s dead battery though. It’s a shame that so many things have built in obsolescence, in effect. They don’t advertise that when you buy a new one! No one would pay to have it repaired commercially compared with buying new. Would have been better to have an easy to replace rechargeable battery in the first place.

I remember when mobile phones had replaceable batteries. Trouble is, people would keep their phones for more than a couple of years and not have to buy new ones and so phone companies wouldn't make so much money. Yet they all claim to be "sustainable". Rant over. Anyway, this is a great video and I'll be following it closely when replacing my 312gw battery this afternoon. Wish me luck!

Also, re my earlier comment, I did replace the internal battery in an older NextBase cam (only 5 years old), which is now back in service. Both were purchased via Amazon, and you can guess where they were made!
