You need to understand that the chickens will completely demolish the grass they have access to in a short couple of weeks. Mine get organic feed plus a free range area that I have covered with baseball netting for predator protection from hawks. The free range area is 10' x 45' and the grass is gone. Next season I hope to build harware cloth covered "salad bars" for them. You might want to consider dividing the pasture area so the chickens get one area for a week or two and then they get to go into the other area so you can reseed the original area or at least let it recuperate. The rest of your plans sound gorgeous. I love the idea of the mill.
@littlehomesteadbigdreams7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to try and do something like that.
@KellieDTravis7 күн бұрын
Yep! My chickens always had their area down to dirt within just a short couple of weeks. Had it looking like a dessert in Louisiana 😂
@user-mc3tp5sd2z7 күн бұрын
I don’t know if you have the room, but you could pasture grass the animals in one area, then rotate them out to the next and put the chickens there to finish and scratch the ground to compost manure in. Then move them again. Repeat. Rotate. Repeat.

The best for your new year. The pond and mill house 🏠 idea are awesome.

Our chickens have the entire front and back yard, and have NOT demolished either. However, both our front and back yards are actually just various kinds of weedy grasses, plantain, and self-heal that we mow to look like a lawn. Our soil is also very rocky/clayey, so it's not a whole lot of 'fun' for them to scratch up everything. However, I have to fence them out of the adjoining flower gardens, or else they dig up all the new seedling plants in the spring, and the tiny crocus bulbs in late fall/early winter.

Sorry but I’m laughing so hard right now. 😂😂😂😂 Brian, that’s just life with animals. I started watching ur channel for gardening advice but have stayed on for, well, it’s a pleasant atmosphere n, don’t get mad, but it’s also entertaining watching ur antics at being a greenhorn with the animals. Oh man ur sooooooo green too. But ur pleasant about it n try so hard , sometimes too hard, to do what’s right for the animals. With myself being raised with animals n still have them, this kinda situation is just another day n my life. U just have to know this kinda stuff IS going to happen n u deal with it the best u can. I have a tshirt that says, “I’m late cause the cows got out”. Christmas Eve we got a call from a friend that they had been rounding up some cows for one of our neighbors n their cow dogs had gone into the woods n left the property they were on. So they were driving the road the next mile over tracking their dogs, they had tracking collars on their dogs, n found them on some of our property so they called to make sure it was okay with us to go on our property to get them. So it’s all n a day with animals. So get some kind of tracking device for Bella. Mine have them. U have to when u live n the boonies like we do.

Bella is still a puppy and she came back - one of our most favorite dogs disappeared one night and we never saw her again, still such a painful memory etched in my soul, her name was Angel and I still pray that she brought joy to someone else. We lost a family member today, although he was older and not someone we see very often, it was an unexpected death at a time of year when it just seems so out of place, yet happens for so many. It kind of keeps everything in perspective. Sending much love to your family and dreams of a wonderful year to come.

Also, have a special recall word that if she’s in the process of leaving or chasing something and you don’t want her to say her name and the recall word and when she comes back give her an extra special treat that she only gets when she listens to that specific word. I’ve trained my pup that way and it’s worked when he was mid chase after a cat. It takes a bit of time and training, but works for him. Those are just some ideas that have worked for my pup. I know every dog is different, though. Good luck with whatever you try!

Good call Brian on pasturing your chickens - when you crack your eggs open you will see the difference and ohh the flavour! Another viewer commented on the destructive down-side of pasture-raised chickens. Like them we had more acreage. Even then we still provided commercial feed when they were in the barn/coop at night - easier for egg collection and out of reach of the local fox population. Your whole new plan sounds great. Happy New Year to all :)

I understand your feelings about Bella, it's kind of like she broke your trust. But what I've learned from raising dogs is not to expect them to be trustworthy until they're about 2 years old. For the first 2 years I teach them what they're supposed to do and I require them to do it ----- but I understand that no matter how good they are I can't really depend on them to do it. Then somewhere around 2 years old something happens. It's like they mature into this reliable dependable young adult that I can start to have a grown-up relationship with. It's a beautiful thing! So don't be discouraged. Bella is a wonderful dog. And this time now is not going to be your future.

I'm a bit like you where I tend to prioritize backyard projects over front yard cuz we just spend way more time in the back. Hubby, however, likes the front to make a good impression. So we try to do a bit of improvement for each every year. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who goes to search for something on the internet and ends up at some totally different, but cool, place with no memory of what I was originally looking for. About dogs and discipline...please don't try to make them feel guilty later, or expect it from them. You only have 2 seconds to discipline your dog which means you have to basically catch them in the act. If you show displeasure later, they pick up your negative tone but they don't have any way to connect it to anything. That only confuses them and causes anxiety, and erodes their trust in you because they truly do not know why you are upset. Thank you for considering my words.
@marthakratz78777 күн бұрын
@@Mrs.Patriot That is so true and also true with cats. The Awol was probably already ancient history for Bella and she was trying to figure out what she did that he was upset about.

@marthakratz7877 Thank you! She'd have to be caught trying to get out. And hopefully not yelled at when returning. You never scold a dog (or cat?) when it comes to you. That would be the act the pet would associate with being scolded, because their memories are that short.

Is the place you are considering placing the water mill amenable to access so that you can get the things you would store there out easily? It seems a bit constrained by the pond, fence and slope - not to mention very out of the way from where you would use many items, which would seem to limit how large and heavy what you store there can be. Maybe accessible from outside via a locked fence, or a dedicated trail one way and steps the other?

Maybe some Mallards; gorgeous colours & look beautiful floating on the water. I notice near the front gate you have an Oleander bush & you also have young children in the family. I lost a very precious little 4 year old cousin to an Oleander death. This bush is used a lot as it has lots of lovely flowers but it is highly poisonous, devastatingly toxic. My cousin touched the bush & touched her mouth and was dead 3 hours later. Removing it would be wise. As you sweet Bella, have you considered a tracking tag? I used this before for one dog. I was just thinking you hadn’t mentioned the mill in a while and wondered if it was still in the works. Love the look, it reminds me of Solvang. One thing I’d add is you should consider building it 360° because it will also denote the entry to your property for those driving up the street and entering your property. So, you might want a special look for street facing as well. I agree with others to put an AirTag on Bella. GPS that girl! A) that might lead you to where she’s getting out, and B) peace of mind to find her when she does. What a blessing on Christmas you got the miracle of her safely home. PS we have the same manger a-frame Christmas ornament. Ours is at least 60+ yrs old! Happy holidays to everyone!

(As said) Nick et al need to take Bella out and have a large and consistent walk about and get all that extra energy burned out of her - and that means walking around the greater neighborhood, city park, dog park, etc. Bella is getting out for mental clarity, but also physical exercise, and keeping healthy. Her symptom, not a problem, is that she needs greater exercise for a healthy lifestyle. Sooo, get the leash and both take a healthy walk until her tongue (and yours) hang out, and she won't be having a problem with getting out. I did this with my friend's over-energetic Germans, and they would want to pull and yank at the start of the "walk" - "military walk." Eventually, they started walking and exercising, while I half-force marched each dog in their turn. Later, near the end of a 1 mile walk around the neighborhood, they were burning up all their beans, and tongues hanging out - they showed that they were nearing their exercise limit, while I could still walk for another mile +. Getting back home, they were glad, exercised, tired, (sore feet ?), and plopped down for a great nap and restorative exercise recovery. They started calming all their in-house rambunctiousness, just like children and puppies bouncing off the walls - proper exercise deals with excess energy, and mental clarity. Bella getting the same walk-about done, gets to smell the air, watching and keep her mind active - instead of just being in the pasture and getting all stir crazy. Unless, like Caesar Milan, Dog Whisperer, you get a treadmill and put her on it, and then walk her in place there and get her the needed exercise and mental stimulation she needs.

Love the mill idea. Can't wait to see it. Have you considered that someone may have let Bella out, intending to steal her?

Love the mill idea! Remember Bella won’t be a grown up dog for several more years, so mischief is bound to happen, air tag a good idea and very close look at all fences. Beautiful Christmas decorations!

My daughter has a female Great Pyrenees as a working farm guard dog.They take a couple years to mature and do best with a companion. Their dog is 3 and she’sa great dog, great with their 4-yo, but occasionally the prey drive can take over briefly. Be patient.

Tag Miss Bella so you can track her. Also has she been spaded yet? She should have come when called. Maybe she got locked in by accident by a neighbor. You got a mystery that needs to be solved. Beautiful mill. Remember you had family together (especially Emily’s ), good food, people that love you enough to help AND Bella did finally come home. God is good, all the time.

If she's a Great Pyrenees, and I think she is...she has a mind of her own, and will do as she pleases, when she's ready. It makes sense she'd come back after dark to do her guard duties. Great Pyrenees are well known for doing as they please and totally ignoring you

@@lindasmashnuknot a Great Pyrenees but she does look like one lol

Have you decided on how you are gong to landscape the dam? Maybe a bench or seating area to watch the pond? Any thought to adding some edible perennial vines like maypops or something similar on the fence? Ed: I see you posted below you don't like passion flowers fruit, so that's out - though there are other things.

Love the idea for the mill! Only caution I want to give you is having a male duck in with your chickens as I've heard if he chooses to breed with any of your chickens it more than likely will kill them. I won't go into the full reason, but simply put their anatomy is not complimentary with the two species of birds. Also, I can't remember, but has Bella been spayed? I ask because my husband's family had a similiar experience with their dog and she had found herself a boyfriend... roughly 2 months later she had pups. Good luck either way with finding out how she's getting out. Looking forward so much to see all yoy plan in doing in 2025.
