In tonights matchup between the Ottawa Senators and the Minnesota Wild, we saw an absolute blow out of a game by the Senators but what will have everyone talking came with just 16 seconds remaining in the second period when Ryan Hartman received a match penalty for a nasty play on Tim Stutzle. In a game the Senators had been dominating, Hartman was noticeable in his efforts to try to spark emotion for the Wild. He wanted a fight after the game was 3-0 with Hamonic who turned him down. Hartman diverted his attention towards Stutzle shortly after. Again, with just 16 seconds remaining, there was a face off in the Wild end where Hartman pushed Stutzle to the ice face first. This was a nasty sequence that has absolutely no place in the NHL. Considering Hartman admitted to intent to injure just last season when he did something similar against Cole Perfetti, this is even more so a disgusting act. He is sure to receive a suspension as a result! As for the game, the Senators put on 52 shots in a 6-0 shutout. I cover it all and more in todays NHL hockey video!

@@PoliticallyIncorrect14u I believe the NHLPA limits fines that are able to be levied to 15k for repeat offenders. This is what the players asked for and they got it. HOWEVER, when suspended you do forfeit your salary as well, which is a much bigger financial impact. For Hartman, as a repeat offender, this is going to be substantial ... 10 games / 82 game season = 12% ... so almost 500k considering his annual salary.

@ I am not sure how you interpreted my comment as being a defense of advocacy of wrestling or tackling. Bret never injured anyone, contrary to your implication. Undoubtedly you are a supporter of the instigator rule that was aimed at taking fighting out of the game in order to make it more palatable to soft headed viewers who can now complain about a guy pushing another guy down face first into the ice (what you complain about as being a cheap shot) instead of complaining about two guys dropping the gloves and settling the beef via a fist fight. Hockey never used to require protective netting around the top of the glass, either, because people who attended the games understood that flying pucks were part of the game and so it was wise to pay attention so as not to get beaned. But with the arrival of new fans who could enjoy a high speed game without fights while allowing Marchand to lick opponents faces with impunity, fan inattention to the game in favor of talking to their neighbor caused said fans to get beaned and so the game had to be defined downward to make space for people who can't pay attention and brag about the sand in their vagina at the same time. Fans like you. Maybe the PWHL (itself a perfectly good product) is more your speed. You can compliment the non hitting, non fighting game while at the same time comparing the relative amount of sand in your vagina to the that of competitors on the ice.

Okay, but, I guess I wanna spark a dialogue. Is this not a by-product of allowing Hockey to be so physical in the first place? If fighting on the ice is allowed, like it has been since the sports inception, how it not expected that players will do these sorts of violent tactics because in their minds, they justify them under the guise of the allowing of fights on the ice. Choosing to purposefully slam an opponent against the glass or against the ice, or lifting their foot and using their blades to slash the neck of their target. Obviosuly, at least it seems to me, that these actions are escalations of the fighting on the ice that Hockey allows. Would it not make sense to remove the incentive? Make it so fighting on the ice comes with STEEP punishments like in literally every other sport, and we WILL see a decrease in these dirty, VIOLENT, tactics. Won't we?

@@CephalonAxii I'm not buying that this it can be considered expected behavior because fighting is legal. Pure fighting sports exist and are able to establish and follow rules. There are boxers who try to get away with hits below the belt, and there are NHLers who play dirty. It really just falls to the league to enforce rules and set examples, especially when it's as ridiculous as this situation with hartman. As an aside, I'm not even really attached to the idea of fighting in the NHL to begin with, it's not why I watch the sport at all - I just think you're making a bit of leap there with the provided rationale that fighting opens the door for this sort of thing. Granted the league sucks at enforcing the rules, and in the past has made some dumb decisions about punishing rulebreakers. I'd agree that punishments need to be harsher, but not necessarily for fighting, but any dirty play - and doubly harsh for bullshit like what we see in this video that isn't even close to being a hockey play.

Exactly! No player is obligated to fight just because someone wants them to. Your team is winning a game and is largely controlling play. Why would you want to interfere with that just because your opponent is frustrated and wants to do something, anything, to change that. You'd be a fool to oblige and your teammates and coaches wouldn't be too happy about it either. I watched Matt Rempe turn down an invitation to fight from Tom Wilson in the playoffs. The Rangers were leading in the series and the game and he knew a fight could only benefit the Capitals at the time. He was, afterwards, criticized and called out for not dropping the gloves but even he knew it would have been the wrong thing to do at the time. Players and coaches know there's a time and place and the bell doesn't always have to be answered. Especially when it only benefits your adversary.

I have lived in hockey country all my life. As somebody who has both played and watched the sport, I have always believed that skill should prevail and be encouraged above everything else. However, that doesn't seem to be the way the NHL operates...Rempe anyone? You can scream "no place" all you want, but the fact is players can get away with this type of behavior, or at least stay in the League, more often than not. Look at the Playoffs last season. Player A got sucker-punched by player B. No on-ice call. No post-game fine or suspension for Player B either...even though Player A, a critical player for his team, missed several games because of the punch. Apparently, Player A "deserved" what he received. There is a rule book. If the NHL wants to be taken seriously, by both the League's players and the League's fans, then perhaps those rules need to be applied and enforced more consistently. Thank God for D1.

Until the NHL implements a " Referee accountability panel " using a demerit system , the league will be plagued with poor calls. Each team should get 3 complaints per game if need be and the panel looks at the play. If it's deemed the ref made a bad or non call, the official receives a demerit point, at a certain amount of accumulated demerit points the official is sent to the AHL, and an AHL ref is promoted for good conduct. Problem is the NHL is inconsistent on enforcement/suspensions and the teams that retaliate generally get punished more than the aggressors. Saw this with the Dylan Larkin thing in Detroit where he got injured and when his guy stood up for him, wound up getting a longer suspension than the guy who caused the injury. In the old days guys like Hartman would have been dealt with before the end of the game and a message sent. Nowadays you can't retaliate due to fear of a worse punishment.

Well I think you did a great job. I've been watching this guy that talks about the Bruins a lot. I'm a Bruins fan. Got to meet one of My childhood heroes Reggie lemlin. I think you're doing a great job and that was a absolute bonehead play and that guy should not be on the ice

Its both an incredibly underhanded and dangerous pattern Hartman is showing with abusing the faceoff to get a cheap shot close to the head of a player. Similar to how high speed hits in the trapezoid are super dangerous and punished seriously, so too should the league view intent to injure in the faceoff circle. I can only imagine how horrific it would be if a skate blade got involved when slamming someone into the ice off the drop. We don't need these things to happen to understand they should be prevented proactively by setting an example. Should be a 3-5 game suspension + fine.

From a former hockey player, things like this are totally normal HOWEVER.. there has to be some respect and dignity for yourself when being the aggressor because this was simply unacceptable. Ryan Hartman doesn't need to be kicked out of the league but again with needing to have some sort of boundary for yourself. Even though it's a face paced game... We still need to be in control of ourselves and have some form of regard for players safety

I dont understand why most comments here are against this? Honestly hockey needs this. Hockey needs the hits, the dirty plays, the drama. Thats what gets eyeballs on the sport. Maybe its because i grew up with hockey in the 90s but i dont want my hockey to be safe and sterile.

Moore showed remorse for the hit on Naslund, just to add some context. Moore was fallen by two players and the two teams even had Bettman and Colin Campbell in the crowd. No secret Colin Campbell couldn’t be considered in anyway impartial about a team he play. It was lady to fester for awhile. Give Bertuzzi a tiny bit of credit for showing remorse. Avalanche media haven’t moved on. Restitution for a 4th lime newbie (Moore) maybe not. In hockey it’s FAFO. Moore could have chose to open with a different tack in the game in the moment. Like this American Hartman, I can guess he was extra on edge because of patriotism. The latest US president with his behaviour on Jan 20, 2021 (just a random day when he totally broke with the President’s protocol of most patriotic presidents going right back to Harrison and Lincoln (who had actual real excuses for literally locking out their incumbent and actually flaking out on the inauguration.) Trump was gone because ?? Don’t tell me a president who can’t swear to uphold the constitution and the two rules listed for a President is patriotic enough for Marine to treat him like a king. My 2 cents . the fans in Ottawa returned the favour. Hockey god karma

Guys like Hartman being in the league are clear evidence the league needs to contract. Why is he in the nhl at all ? There is not enough actual nhl talent to fill the teams so we have a bunch of guys who 30 years ago would be ahl lifers on nhl teams. The nhl need to contract 4 worst performing teams from a business stand point. It would make the game overall so much better to watch. Contract 4 teams, raise the cap, and add a provision that allows teams to either go over the cap to sign their own players or allow teams to select specific home grown player or players who cap hit is half of their contract. That way teams can keep their stars, we don’t have to watch guys like Hartman anymore, and every team will get better because the talent will be less spread out. The nhl has way too many teams.
