I want to thank you and people like you that take the time to help out do-it-yourselfers like myself. This video was EXTREMELY helpful in helping me replace the turn signal assembly on my 08 Grand Prix. Your step by step instructions were spot on! You rock! There is only one small suggestion that I would make regarding the replacement procedure and that is, when you are removing the front/lower screw (not the one on top) on the actual turn signal assembly, turn the steering wheel so that the top of the wheel is on the left side and not on top. Doing this will give you a lot more clearance to get a torx driver or ratchet & extension onto the head of the screw. It's also easier than using a ratcheting wrench. Other than that excellent video. The info on how to remove the trim was great. THANK YOU!

Great video! Although, I must say, if you would have turned the steering wheel 1/4 turn counter clockwise it gives you just enough clearance to access that T25 screw with a screwdriver. Instead of fooling with the T25 bit and ratcheting wrench. Especially with the bottom steering column plastic off. But still, great video!

great how to video without a lot of unnecesary talk or banter. I love it. Although, I did find myself yelling at the screen "TURN THE STEERING WHEEL!!!" when it came to that bottom screw on the front. If you turn the wheel 90 degrees to the left, you can use the same tool you used to remove the top screw. Also, helpful hint: if you DO have to use the method shown here of turning a "bit" with a 1/4" wrench, take a small piece of electrical or duct tape and put it around the "bit", then press bit and tape into the 1/4" hole in your wrench/. It will grip it enough to hold it while you work. Hope that helps someone!!

Thank you so much for this! My car has been wanting to turn on the high beams/brights with the right turn signal for about a year now. First it was only occasionally and would go off as soon as I tapped the turn signal arm. Then it increased frequency and occasionally happened with the left turn as well, but I found if I pushed the arm up a certain way for the right turn signal, it generally would behave. Then warm weather came and it behaved itself all but one time all summer. But as soon as it started to get a little cool out, it started up again and now it is getting really fussy to get the high beams to go off without holding the arm. So I knew I needed to decide once and for all whether I was going to try this myself or let the pros do it. My brother is a mechanic (but lives out of state) so he was able to fill me in on just how involved it was (I was mainly concerned with whether I needed to remove the wheel or anything else I wasn’t equipped for) and he also said that only the battery needed to be disconnected. The part itself looked pretty much plug-and-play but I still didn’t know how to go about getting to the steering column in the first place. Your video is extremely helpful and I especially appreciate the mentions of the little things to look out for when reassembling, the tools needed right at the beginning, and also using a cloth over the screwdriver to separate the top and bottom steering column finish pieces. Now I feel like I may be able to do this myself after all!

@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the cause of the noise. Most common is the clips became loose, and needs to be readjusted. "fit and finish' is always something to double check. Just not putting panels back together snugly can cause rattle. As sucky as it is to say, the only way to fix it is to take it back apart and check to see where the rattle is coming from

Thank you so much for posting. I have an 08 Grand Prix drivers side front turn signal and/or emergency flasher does not work. Rear blinker works but rapidly. Replaced front bulb, no change. Made sure bulb works correctly by installing on passenger front. All wiring appears to be intact to under hood fuse/relay box. Would a turn signal flasher OR the multi-function turn signal switch have separate contacts that would operate the front signals independently from the rear signals? Thinking I may have an issue with either a flasher, relay or turn signal switch, but just not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Love your posts!
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Rodney, the good and bad news is that there is no turn signal flasher or relay (that I recall). That is all controlled by the BCM. So since we can eliminate the bulb from the equation, that leaves the turn signal bulb harness, the turn signal switch, and the BCM. Since the rear turn signal works, along with the rear driver side, it is highly unlikely to be the BCM. So this leave the Turn Signal Switch or the harness. For my money, I sounds like the harness is bad. If you have a voltmeter, you should test it out to make sure it is even getting power. Although I am not there to verify, I think the front driver side bulb harness is the issue. Check for loose wiring too, corrosion, anything like that.

Nexus bud....I didn't know you had this video until you mentioned it in our comments about the trailing arm. Can I suggest to check your tags?....because I read about this method but google or youtube did not suggest your video to me when I was repairing my turn signal switch. In no way trying to compete or say my upcoming video is better....but the difference in mine is, I did it step by step per a factory service manual....removed air bag , steering wheel and all....a lot more work but easier to get to this way. The only reason I even have an upcoming video is the 1st replacement was defective and the cruise control didn't work afterwards.....looks like your car, doesn't have cruise control or at least on the multifunction switch...mine does, but 1st replacement was put together wrong/defective and since I knew what I was doing the 2nd time around , I recorded it. Mine is a base model 2007....what is yours? I will contact you when my video is posted to my channel..... Hey Shannon, no worries at all. I do tag my videos pretty well, but unfortunately, there is other criterias KZbin uses for video search results. I did search "grand prix turn signal' and 'grand prix turn signal stalk' and my video did come up. But KZbin is so finicky like that. So no worries at all. The video in competition was only in jest, without a doubt. I dont mind multiple versions of videos out there. Everyone does things differently, so sometimes watching multiple versions of the same job can give great insights. Also, since you are going more from a factory service manual perspective, it will give people alternatives. Nothing wrong with that in my book. My car does have cruise control, but it is on the steering wheel, on the lower right side. I have a 2005 base model, but heavily modified. Feel free to contact me when your channel is up and running, and I will definitely review. I am looking forward to is. I feel your pain with the video software. I have been doing this for a few years, and upgrade incrementally as I go. Baby steps, as they say. As my channel only pulls limited revenue at this time, due to it still being relatively small, I upgrade as I go, and when I can. You will get there, I have no doubt.
@zenguitarankh
@zenguitarankh 6 жыл бұрын
This is awesome man....thanks! Is replacement of the stock the fix if you have a rapid blink on the left or right side when both bulbs are good? Mine blinks fast on the left on the cluster and in the back but the front is on but doesn't blink. Also sometimes the high beams come on when I do the right turn signal. Did you ever experience this?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 6 жыл бұрын
No problem at all. For the first issue, that sounds more like a burnt filament than a bad stalk. The bulbs have 2 filaments inside, one for the regular running light, and the other for the turn signal. If you are getting a fast flash from the rear and cluster, but no flash at all in the front, then it sounds like the filament is blown. Check to make sure the filament in the bulb is good (should be 2 filaments there). If the bulb is good, then I would use a multimeter and check the signal wire, and make sure it is getting power when you turn on the signal. If it is not, then you need to further diagnose the issue. If it is, then it could be the stalk. For the second issue, I have not seen that before. I have heard of it a couple of times, and both times, replacing the stalk fixed the issue. So I cannot 100% say this will fix it, but if the high beam comes on with the right signal, then something is definitely up. Hope this helps

I don't want to say 100% it is the issue, as there can always be multiple causes to an issue. I will say it is VERY common for these turn signal stalks to give issues and to affect the headlights. Other things can affect it (for example the center mounted brake light being out can affect the cruise control), but it is definitely worth looking into

@@demonchild8452 at that point, I normally start working my way back from the bulb with a voltmeter. It is very frustrating, I agree. I would start by checking the power at the low beam socket, both inside at the terminal, and outside at the wire. It is possible, even though unlikely, that the sockets both went bad. You should see it when you remove that outer cover. It is a bit tricky to get to, but you should be able to reach enough to unplug the old turn signal stalk from the wire harness. Then plug the new one in to the same spot. The rest of the process should more or less be the same

Hey first off I love your videos. I have the same car as you I believe. I have a 2005 Grand Prix the same color as yours. I'm having a weird issue with the suspension whenever the gas disengages. It's like a cracking and clunk sound. It will make the noise if the car is in drive and I keep the foot on the brake and gas at the same time when I disengage the gas pedal. It will not do it when it is in park. I think it might be something to do with a transmission mount Maybe?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 6 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Appreciate the feedback. Love hearing things like that. Thanks for being a fan. And yep, that is the same Grand Prix that I have there. For your issue, there is a few things that can happen, that can cause the issue you are describing. Since it is happening when you release the gas, it sounds like it is when the engine rolls forward after acceleration, and comes to a rest, so first thing to look at is always the mounts. There is 4 mounts for the car...the 2 front 'dog bones', a driver-side transmission mount, and a lower passenger side motor mount. I would start with these. I would check the dog bones first...see if there are damaged or if there is any play in them. Have someone rev engine in neutral (make sure to be safe, chock the wheels, etc) and then abruptly release the throttle, and listen for any noises. Also, for the passenger side dog bone mount, it doesnt attach to the engine, but to a frame. These are known to break or crack with age. Check that and see if it is broken. If all good, then move to the lower mounts. If all that checks out, you may have a suspension issue.

Okay that is very helpful, but can you do a video on how to fix the horn of the vehicle on the streering wheel?

Glad to hear the video was helpful. For the horn, are you talking about diagnosing the horn in general, or how to remove the horn (and subsequently the air bag)?

@@NexusAuto well in my case the trumpets that make the sound are working, because the alarm activates it. But when I try to activate it from the steering wheel button it doesn't make any sound.
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
@@torerotigreen9198 hmmm, ok, that eliminates a few things from the equation. The horn fuse would be good, as so should the relay. Also, the BCM is good (which is what tells the horn to beep when you press the alarm). So aside from a wiring issue (broken or pinched wire), you are looking at either the Horn switch iteself, which is inside the turn signal lever (this video), or the switch/ground inside the air bag coil. How is your turn signal switch? All works ok?
@torerotigreen9198

@@NexusAuto the turn signal works but the high beams light on lol
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
@@torerotigreen9198 LOL oh that is always a fun one. I know some GP owners who just never bother to fix the switch to piss off incoming drivers. Mean, but it happens haha! Ok, so before you do anything else, and just so you can be 100% sure, make sure to check the horn relay. It would be working, since the it activates with alarm, but you want to make sure it is working correctly. Pending that all electrical is good(relay and wiring), you are either left with the turn signal switch (which is highly likely the issue) or the air bag coil (very unlikely). I would give 95% that it is the turn signal switch, but dont quote me 100% as I am just giving an armchair diagnosis. The thing is, under the steering wheel, where the air bag coil is, the only thing that affects the horn is a little ground switch that grounds the horn circuit when you press in the horn in a fit of anger at someone lol. It is very unlikely for that to go, since not much can affect it. Anything is possible, but it is unlikely.That little ground goes to the turn signal stalk, which goes to the BCM (Body Control Module). That is far more likely to go, since it is something we interact with every day. And since the high beams are stuck on, even more likely that is the cause. Additionally, if you want to check the ground, you need to disable the entire air bag system and then get a special tool to remove the air bag (they are about $70 US on eBay, more in stores). It is up to you on how you want to proceed, but you may want to change your turn signal stalk first and see if it fixes the issue. It may not, but it is a better next step vs disabling and removing the air bag.

Honestly, hate to say it, but I am not sure. In a scenario like this, I would normally get out my multimeter and begin some testing. It must have something to do with the work done, or something related. I would say to double check all wiring and make sure it is plugged in correctly. It may be some work, but you can try plugging back in the old one and see if the car starts...new one may be defective. Also, check all fuses, even fuses unrelated to the work you did (like the starter fuse) and then if all looks good, you will have to dig deeper with the testing. That should not happen though, so something unusual is up

Only thing I can suggest is maybe getting a manual, like the service manual or a haynes manual. Better than nothing, I guess. Good luck though.
