Also Nate mentioned the physical abuse in this song and I Wanted to get ahead of anyone say that it was his dad, he doesn't touch on it much after this but his mom and dad split and it was as you said, his mom's boyfiend/Nate's step dad that would drink and abuse nate. His dad was a loving albeit a Busy and somewhat distant Dad.
