It's the same with DPI... Just throw the ball near a receiver, even if he's never going to catch it, and hope he gets some kind of contact. while OPI is almost never called.

Returner is protected as they try to field the punt as its in the air. Gunners are supposed to wait until the ball is caught to contact the kick returner if that returner is actively trying to field the punt.

Intent shouldn’t matter if the foul is in place to protect kickers…one can block the punt without demolishing the punter.

I don't think it counts if the ball hasn't actually left his body yet. It was still on contact with his foot when it was blocked. I think it only applies whenever the ball has already been punted. There was one like that last year and I had the same question, and that was the answer I was given.

Not if you get the ball first. @s-train8855 I remember a few years back any contact with the kicker resulted in a flag. different yardage penalties were enforced if it was contact with the kicking leg and contact with the planting leg. just seems kickers are getting smashed on this year lol must not be a point of emphasis this year 🤷‍♂️
