The NFL is considering banning "hip-drop tackles" after they resulted in injuries to several high-profile players, including Patrick Mahomes and Tony Pollard. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL's Chief Medical Officer, stated that the tackle, which is banned in the National Rugby League, will be a subject of discussion during the offseason. The NFL's competition committee and medical staff will be involved in these discussions. The elimination of these tackles may be seen as a restriction on defensive player techniques, however, similar objections were raised when the NFL banned horse-collar tackles, which improved player safety.
