The NFL is considering banning "hip-drop tackles" after they resulted in injuries to several high-profile players, including Patrick Mahomes and Tony Pollard. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL's Chief Medical Officer, stated that the tackle, which is banned in the National Rugby League, will be a subject of discussion during the offseason. My exact thoughts. When you watch hip drops and the way force is exerted on the runner's lower legs that are planting into the ground, it's asking for leg injury. Crazy amount of opposing force. That's different than a tackler leveraging his hips to lift and slam the ball carrier: the runner's legs are being lifted rather than pulled into the ground against their own forward momentum.

BS. The hip drop tackle only recently became a problem because proper tackling dictated that you use your leg strength to slow the defender and wait for help. Hip drops were considered bad technique because if you lose your grip, the runner is gone. Current day, NFL players know exactly when they can use it…over the middle so if you lose grip, another defender will pick them up. It is used deliberately because it used to be considered bad tackling. They do it to “ding up” start players, and now that they are going after QBs, the game is up. Mahomes, Hurts, Lamar, Dak are getting targeted with these tackles all game long and it is BS. Classic form tackling is all you ever needed and any deviation is almost always intended to injure the other player. It is BS.

If so they have to agree to stop forward progress when a runners feet stop. They are making it way to unfair for defenders, giving them minimal options on how to tackle and giving the offensive player all the ads engage. They also don’t call things like offensive players lowering their head to make contact or the high/low blocks that occurs all the time on the LOS

You are wrong. Hip drop tackling is actually poor technique, called “ARM TACKLING” because you let your legs swing out and off the ground. If you lose your grip, the runner will go to the house. They started using it again early in games on plays inside the tackle box to ding up receivers and QBs. It is effing deliberate most of the time, especially with a larger tackler on a receiver. Anyone telling you another story is lying. Sometimes a CB taking on a TE will get dragged involuntarily, but those are obvious and they are always trying to get a foothold back. They are targeting QBs and star receivers lately and the whole league knows it. Game over. It is dirty football.

Just make every completed pass a TD while you’re at it. Why even have a defense? Can’t go above the shoulders. Can’t go below the waist. Can’t lead with the helmet (or the shoulder if the refs think the hit was too hard) Can’t grab the back of the collar. Can’t hit a receiver in the act of catching the ball (defenseless) Can’t leave your feet. And now you’re suggesting you can’t grab them by the waist and drag them down? How are you supposed to tackle? Ask the receiver nicely to lay down? Just skip the theatrics and put them in a red jersey and play flag football.

Literally the first clip is the ONLY Hip-Drop Tackle... it's basically when you see a tackler grab around a guys waist/thighs then spin his lower body into the ball carrier's legs. It's usually the technique employed when it's a 1 vs. 1 situation and the tackler is at a disadvantage angle wise... if you have ever played football you know how hard it is to stop a guy whose going full steam ahead while you're side-stepping/back pedaling.

ONLY the first tackle you showed was a Hip Drop. All the othes were NOT HIP DROPS. "Hip drop" is when the defender, once he has control of you leaves HIS feet and pulls you down with his weight. What you are showing is defenders lift pull carriers off their feet and throwing them down. That is NOT a hip drop. Most of what you are showing are Body Slams.

Almost all of these clips are the OPPOSITE of a hip drop tackle. This is the equivalent of “sweep the leg” in Karate. You never do it in competition because it can injure your opponent, and it is easily avoided. This technique works, certainly, but it is becoming known as a way to injure high profile players. All a tackler needs to do is keep the bottom part or side of their foot on the ground during the tackle. It is actually a proven way to increase ground friction to slow a runner, so it is not bad technique. You can also still use a hip drop technique as long as you swing your body AWAY from the runners legs. It is BS that defenders claim this is hard to avoid, as it has only recently become more prevalent. Defenders know this causes mini ankle sprains constantly and so they started using it more. It is dirty play and should be flagged.

Aussie here, the guys who banned the hip drop tackle in rugby (the NRL). First off what a hip drop tackle is (for those who arent sure) is using your body weight as a deadweight whilst tackling hips of the person. If you dont know anything about the NRL the biggest thing you need to know is that the whole leauge is run by people who feel like what the broncos are doing this year is too thinky. One of the very very few things they have gotten right was banning the hip drop tackle. The reason its such a cunty move is because often when youre tackling the opposition with hip drop, you either tangle your legs together or you land with your body weight on their legs causing them to bend in ways (esspecially ankles) are not supposed to bend and when you add the weight of two full sized athletes it usually does nothing more than completely and utterly fuck up legs. I know alot of people think its soft but its actually a good rule to have in place and i understand that gridiorn is a contact sport and not really a tackling sport but teach people to fucking tackle properly

@@touchdownblitz If the NFL keeps introducing rules on tackling, types of tackling, location of tackles, we are handcuffing the defence. They have swung too far in one direction, and nothing in the other way. I agree balance is crucial, but it seems that they don’t want balance.
