The thing with helmets and protection in sports is that it can make you do things that you would not normally do without them. That why maybe there are more injuries in NFL than Rugby. Until recently, NFL and College Football were brutal like Ryan stated here. Certain players were hired to hurt their opponents on the field. Before I get slammed for this comment, I love watching Rugby. Remember founders of American Football took some aspects from Rugby like laterals and tackles. AF is similar to Rugby like gaining territory on opponent. Rugby has both offense and Defense while AF had them separately. AF is more like strategies. That's why quarterbacks are often nicknamed, "Field Generals" as they get plays from main general or offensive coordinator as top general aka head coach looks on..... Now, rise in concussions & CTE's, league curtailing those illegal hits. Plus, coaches are training their players in tackling rugby style.

As an English person who plays rugby you get used to being completely battered. There are different optimal builds for diffrent positions. Big and chunky for a prop tall and lanky and fast for a winger for example. It is so exhilarating when you complete a good tackle to stop them from getting to try line and when you win a nice counter ruck. I watched my friend dump tackle a beast double the size of him and that really got the whole team going man rugby is fun

The other rugby defensive manoeuvre is the Rugby Tackle Handoff, typically a straight arm palm to the chest (face) of the guy tackling you. One the rugby field the ground if often muddy, i.e. soft; it reduces the impact on landing when you are tackled. Note, no body armour or hard helmets. The soft leather helmets worn by some reduces head grazes and prevents ear detachment.

The winger was tackled and slid down the side line, getting dazed (if not knocked out) in the process. He got back to his feet, lime stripped down his face and jersey, asking if he had scored. He was only about half way into our side but he was so disorientated he thought he had travelled much further. Rugby was invented in England in 1823 when during a game of football William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it creating the game of rugby. Its called rugby because they were playing at Rugby School at the time. American football has its roots in the game of Rugby as colonists that went to America, took over the game and they made some changes and it ended up as American football. Rugby is a lot more diverse than American football as people all over the world play it. Traditionally the best teams are England, Australia, New Zealand, Wales and South Africa as well as Ireland, France and Scotland who also have a lot of history in the sport. Although rugby players don't wear pads and helmets they don't have that many bad injuries as they are taught to tackle properly.

To add to the tale of gridiron football, in 1880, Walter Camp (the "father of American Football") created the line of scrimmage with uncontested possession, the system of downs, the pass (snap) back from the center, and the arrangement of players. This was certainly a different game from rugby football, but the game was still characterized by the mass collisions and pile-driving plays (I incidentally wonder if the name 'buck' for a plunge play is related to 'buck-buck', a street form of leap-frog (-ish) made popular by Bill Cosby's famous monologue about Fat Albert. kzbin.info/www/bejne/amPceH5tpduajMU But I digress). In 1905, the game was pretty lethal: 19 player deaths and 137 serious injuries (and, doubtless, 'minor' injuries that affected a player for life). This in a time when there was no pro game, just college and high school, so those numbers are pretty huge. Walter Camp and others (like a fellow you may have heard of named John Heisman. Yes, _that_ Heisman), at the urging of President Roosevelt - whose sons played the game - reworked the rules to make it safer, adding innovations such as the forward pass, the separation of the offensive and defensive lines, and other smaller innovations to open up the game and discourage or ban mass attacks or the flying wedge (which is also illegal in rugby football now). There have been other changes since then, of course, but the game that emerged is pretty recognizable as modern football. For fun, go to gutenberg.org and check out the college and prep-school sports novels of one Ralph Henry Barbour, who wrote a ton of these boy books between 1899 and 1930. You can see the modern game of football emerging over time (especially in 'Forward Pass', a 1908 novel about the 'new football'). In contrast, baseball seems never to have changed at all. Not even the uniforms. For a more serious 'primary source' about college football in 1905, find a copy of Big-Time Football at Harvard, 1905: The Diary of Coach Bill Reid (Sport and Society) (ed. Ronald A. Smith, University of Illinois Press, 1994)

"Football" is the English game were a ball is kicked by the feet ('foot' ball). American football is a combination of real football but mainly rugby. 🇬🇧

It's good to see you, Mack and the other boys together again. You are all looking so well and I hope Uni is going great for you all. I am told Rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen whereas Soccer is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans. 😂. Soccer or rather Football as it is called over here in the UK, I was never good at, my feet seemed incapable of following the quick demands of my brain. 😂 Now Rugby, that lit a big Red warning sign in my mind and as I wanted to live to old age I kept away from it. Kudos to those who have the talents to do sports, how's your running coming along Joel?

Great reaction but it has to be said that the comparison between Rugby Union and American Football 🏈 isn't a particularly good one to make. The tackling is different and goes on for the entire 80 minutes and can be done by anyone. America Football is mostly about blocking and making a clear path with not as much tackling. Rugby League has more in common with AF. Also as an American Football Official in England it is played at both University and Senior levels throughout the year and I've seen plenty of injuries incurred so the "it's a namby pamby game played by wimps" comments that generally are made on videos like this disappoint me. The players are coached to tackle properly they aren't allowed on the field if they can't manage it. Of course the padding and helmets would change the way either code of Rugby is played so it's a bit strange to try and compare the two sports. Just to add I played Rugby at school and I've watched plenty of it over the years alongside watching US College football and the NFL.

Great reactions guys! However gonna have to watch this again because I was too busy watching the rugby than your faces...!!! Definitely watch more rugby! The Six Nations Cup games can be pretty brutal, plus you get to see the different styles of playing each country has. Good video, thanks!

Rugby Union fans have witnessed far more brutal tackles than these. 🤪

The great thing about Rugby is that all players are "in the game" at all times, and is beautiful team sport when played well....

A few players who I think you should have a look at if you haven’t already. Jonah Lomu, Dan Carter, Jonny Wilkinson, Cheslin Kolbe, Antoine DuPont, Brian O’Driscoll, Manu Tuilagi (or a Tuilagi family compilation), Ellis Genge, Eben Etzabeth, Tadhg Furlong and the highlights of the Italy vs Wales game in the 2022 six nations. Italy are a team who almost always end up finishing last in that tournament and they did this year, but it was their first win in a six nations series in over seven years. From a neutral point of view it was one of the best games of rugby I’ve ever seen. Very emotional especially for the Italians

A other game to mention would be the england vs Australia match from 03 that turned into a battle ground a few after the game started...some of the huts in that was just insane...and tbat was back when jonno and Wilkinson where part of the team....

@@DEATHSxNEMASIS watched that game myself for the first time a few years back (I was barely 1 1/2 when it happened 😂) and yeah, brilliant example of everyone putting their bodies on the line for the cup. Another standout game for me as well is England vs France in 07 if I remember correctly. One of the most brutal games I’ve ever seen and ending the match with a 5 point difference showed that

Cool reaction guys. Rugby is quite big in Australia you're right, but its much bigger in South Africa and specifically New Zealand who are HUGE on it. For something different again check out AFL guys (australian football) - Some big hits, guys 'Mossing' other guys. You'll love it. Start with "What is AFL - Aussie Rules explained"

You said you were looking at doing a video on rugby rules. Just remember there are two different types of rugby, league and union and they have different rules. Some things that are allowed in one are not allowed in the other. There is an old quote that has been around since I was a kid (that's 70 years+) which said that "Rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen, soccer is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans." Personally, I prefer Oscar Wildes's quote about rugby: "Rugby is a good occasion for keeping thirty bullies far from the centre of the city.”

when you get knocked down as long as you keep your hands on the ball you can pass off to keep the game flowing, sometimes its good to take a hit from a few opposition team members and pass off to a teammate so they have the advantage, and concussion isnt as common as people would think. Also part of the game is knowing when to pass back before you get hit or pass off after being hit.

Just in case you didn't know...you can only tackle a player who has the ball...and you cannot tackle above the shoulders...and no punching or kicking (or biting hehe) in the tackle.

Rugby players are good sports and although it's competitive it's played in good spirit without malice. It's very rare these player get injuries or anybody gets seriously hurt. There are strict rules about which part of the body you can tackle ie no neck or head. It's just grown up boys having fun.
@stuartmonteith70792 жыл бұрын
The jumping to catch the ball is actually tactically sound as while you are in the air you can’t be tackled that means the opponent loses momentum waiting for you to land.

You would be surprised that there isn’t a lot of concussions in this sport of Rugby or Rugby League due to the fact we learn from the age of 5 to tackle with our shoulders and push with our legs and never attack an opponent in the head the average age for either of these sports is around 35 years old when they retire so from 5 to 35 not a bad run to maybe not even get one concussion

There was a game in 1973 which i think is the best game ever of rugby union. The All Blacks had beaten the home nations in the UK , The Barbarians were a mixture of these beaten teams . The game was less than 10mins old when the greatest try was scored , after which the game became a exibition of rugby both teams threw the ball about . Worth watching the highlites guys

As an American I can say Rugby is definitely a man’s sport, that’s for sure. Half of Nfl players are either obese or skinny, Rugby players are all jacked. Respect

Love rugby! We always call it the gentleman’s sport over here in the UK as you MUST treat all players and staff with respect. You call the referee ‘Sir’. You all shake hands and have a pint afterwards. I always feel safe watching them compared to when I’ve gone to see live football (or soccer as you call it) the best teams you need watch from the Uk are, London Wasps, Gloucester and Bath. Next time you’re here you should check out a game. 🇬🇧
