I still feel like the denying of RB's is really crazy. Modern NFL, yes, it's less needed as they are a lot more rotational. But even 15-20 years ago, a lot of teams couldn't survive without a 1000 yard rusher. Even with a shitty QB, they could do some great things. Saying Manning got Robbed of an MVP by running backs in like 2006 or 2012 is really really wrong. AP carried that sorry ass Vikings squad to a 10-6 record when their best QB was Christian Ponder, that's an unmatched category.

It's not necessarily comparing one to the other, but thinking of what you could replace them with. Take Shaun Alexander off that Seahawks team, and you could probably get a decent running back (this was the mid 00s, they were everywhere) who puts up 1200 yards and 12 touchdowns. Replacing Peyton Manning with a 'decent' QB is much harder, cause there's generally only 20 reliable QBs in the league at any one time and there's only one or two that can throw for 35 touchdowns and not make lots of mistakes. Most RBs aren't marching you down the field by rushing 12 times in a row. Peyton could pass 12 times in a row and get you a TD. However, saying all of that, record breaking seasons deserve to be rewarded and I have no qualms with either of those players winning over what were pretty standard Manning seasons.

That's what I like about Baseball over the NFL. Outside of Starting Pitchers, which have their own MVP category with other pitchers, no position is generally more important or just a slam dunk for MVP every year. One year it will be a Right Fielder, then a Shortstop, then a Catcher. I like it that way. Everyone has a chance. Obviously some positions get more attention such as Shortstop, but it can still be won by everyone. But tbh, Catcher is the most important. A bad catcher will ruin your defense.

Here's one to debate: Johnny Unitas over Sonny Jurgensen in 1967. Sonny set the NFL passing yards record and led the league with 31 TDs (a lot back then). He also led the league in pass attempts (and completions) while also leading the league in interception rate (when it was harder to avoid picks). He was also second in sack rate (although those pre-1982 sack stats are a bit spotty). Unitas had a better completion percentage and was second in yards, but threw only 20 TDs with the same number of INTs (16). However, Jurgensen went 5-6-1 with a defense that ranked 11th in points allowed, while Unitas went 11-1 with a defense that was 2nd in points allowed. Food for thought.

@@beam5655 You can't really say some of Wilt's or Bird's MVPs should have been unanimous. Wilt stuffed the stat sheet greater than anyone else but had a losing playstyle and wasn't liked by teammates or many other people. He could bring a team 50-60 wins but would crumble, and he showed he could never truly bring a team success. Pair that with playing in the same league as the greatest winner in NBA history in Bill Russell and the Laker Wings who made the finals almost every year Elgin and the Logo as well as the Big O always having dominant seasons, and there's no real argument for him to win unanimously. Same for Bird, who definitely deserved his 3 MVPs, but was never by far the most dominant player in the league while Moses, Magic, and MJ were having all-time great seasons. Kareem should've won maybe 3 more MVPs, but definitely should have had 1971 unanimous if the older players weren't so jealous of him. And of course Jordan is either #1 or #2 all time depending on what you believe makes someone greater and deserved a few more MVPs (funnily enough Malone robbed him in 97 and Jordan took the 98 MVP when Malone deserved it a bit more), but there were only 1-2 seasons where MJ really should've won Unanimous. A Unanimous MVP is a mix between an absolutely legendary season that breaks records or absolutely dominates statistically and in terms of wins, and a league slightly weaker or less competitive than other years. MJ had many legendary seasons, but there were always other MVP heavyweights throughout his career such as Magic and Bird, Hakeem, Malone, Barkley, DRob, and Shaq aside from 1992 (Drexler, DRob, and Malone divvied up the other 15 votes) and 1996 (Penny, Hakeem, and Malone took away the last 4 votes)

If we're being honest, LeBron should have a minimum of 7 MVPs and maybe even 8 or 9 MVPs. He should've won in 2006, 2011 and 2018 for sure and then he's got an incredibly strong case for both 2014 and 2020.

Rose definitely had an MVP-worthy season, but he just so happened to be playing during Prime LeBron's reign of terror over the league. 2011 LeBron averaged 27/8/7 with 2.2 stocks on 51/33/76 or 59 TS% while leading the league in PER for the 4th straight time with 27.3, BPM for the 4th straight time with 8.1, VORP for the 6th straight time with 7.8, as well as leading the NBA in Offensive Win Shares, Total Win Shares, and Win Shares/48 for the 3rd consecutive season and being 3rd in Defensive Win Shares. He was 2nd in points and ppg, 12th in assists and apg, top 10 in steals and spg, 20th in TS%, 16th in Defensive rating, led the league in FG made despite not being top 5 in FG attempts, and was 4th in 2pt FGs despite not even being top 10 in 2pt FG attempts. 2011 Rose averaged 25/4/8 with 1.6 stocks on 45/33/86 or 55 TS% while being 9th in PER, 3rd in BPM, tied with LeBron for the most Offensive BPM, and 2nd in VORP. He was 5th in Win Shares, 6th in Offensive and 8th in Defensive Win Shares, and 10th in Win Shares/48. Rose was also 3rd in FG attempts while being 2nd in FG misses, and also 2nd in Usage (all behind Kobe lol). Rose had a MVP-contending season, but LeBron was still historically great while having his numbers reduced due to learning a new system and no longer needing to will his team to victory (which he still did often in the following years), as well as struggling to decide Leadership with Wade for a good part of the season. Objectively, LeBron was just a far better player than Rose or MVP runner-up Dwight in 2011, and was the greatest in the world. However, what truly won Rose the narrative. Not only did people hate LeBron for the decision and the NBA/NBA fans refuse to believe anyone who has star teammates should never win MVP unlike the NFL and MLB, but by the expectations that they had set and the expectations that had been set for them, they underperformed. 58 wins and struggling during the first half of the season to build team chemistry, leadership, and momentum when the bar was 65+ or even 70 wins just wasn't enough. Rose led a young upstart Bulls who nearly upset the Garnett-less Celtics in 2009 to 62 wins and the 1st Seed, and the "Youngest MVP ever" storyline worked heavily in his favor. I understand and respect why Rose somewhat deservedly won the MVP, but in a revote where the reqs for what an MVP are normalized, LeBron should win.

The argument of LT not winning that MVP because QB is more important is so dumb i cant tell if its satire. LT that year was on the best team in the NFL surrounded by not a single reciever with a thousand yards. Hell LT by himself had half of the recieving yards of antonio gates the number 1 pass catcher of that team. The chargers without LT that year would have been abysmal and thats literally what an MVP means. Its most valuable player not most valuable QB. Today's league makes sense for that thought process due to the running game being nonexistent for the most part outside of henry and mccaffrey, in 2006 however running the ball was as important as passing

No. As a Saints fan, it's because of Sean Payton. Everyone knew he was great, but because of the pass happy offense he was in, people would constantly discredit his numbers as they assumed the system he was in was boosting his stats. Only after he retired and everyone saw how you couldn't just plug anyone into that offense and have them throw for 5000 yards is when we saw everyone suddenly say how "underrated" Brees was.
