And we are not talking about ‘checkered pasts’ in the sense of a couple trips to lunch detentions and 10 demerits from the headmaster...
Believe it or not, there are a number of NFL players who really ran with the wrong crowds back in the day-and had ties to some of the most dangerous gangs in the country.

I can tell you about Aaron, being from Bristol CT and going to school with his cousin… ever since his dad passed when he was in high school, his whole demeanor changed. There was no one there to keep him out of trouble and away from trouble like his dad would. It’s a sad sorry and ultimately the end result is just awful to see, guy had it all but couldn’t avoid off the field issues

Of these stories, I think the craziest is the Aaron Hernandez story. Of ANY NFL player... that'd have to be Darryl Henley of the Rams. The dude talked a Rams cheerleader into becoming a mule for him to transport drugs. Then, when he got caught, while in lockup, he ordered a hit on a federal judge from a public payphone in holding. They got it recorded so his "drug bust" 10-15 became life in prison.

True when you grow up in an area that is filled with gangs, and your friends from preschool, brothers, cousins, uncles. etc are in gangs, and despite what people say about gangs they are the ones looking out for you when growing up and giving you money among other things, walking away from those people that defended you growing up, maybe even saving your life at one time or another, has to be one of the hardest things to do. Now some like Hernandez do become enamored with that life because now they are being looked up to by the very ones that they looked up to while growing up. Plus some lets face it are just flat out criminals, but I think that can be said about anyone.

I grew up around gangs and stuff, I was even friends with some of them, but I was never affiliated. Some of them worked so hard, and now they’re in college, doing so much better. They left that life behind them, and things are working out. Sports did it for a lot of them.
