OhioState Buckeyes the only time I’ve seen this rule come into effect, NFL or locally (which only happened once after our cornerback got his helmet ripped off from a face mask which he would have gotten a pick 6 from if not for the rule), is when a player is about to score. The only time where this would have prevented an injury, is the Bills one, but even then the refs would have had to predict the helmet coming off right as the ball was snapped, because the defense doesn’t pay attention to the refs until the 2nd or 3rd whistle, which by that time, the defense wouldn’t be able to reach the player and they had a touchdown or the player would’ve already gotten hit and was down. So it overall just fucks over players that have very tough skin or breakthroughs and almost guaranteed touchdowns, it rarely does what it’s job is, like the new Roughing the passing penalty changes where you “tackle them too hard” or the QB get tapped in the helmet and it’s a guaranteed 5 yards for the Offense, it just goes against what you taught, if you’re not down and you have the ball, keeps going and when you’re hitting the QB, hit them hard to knock them down, and if you’re interested, this is coming from a FS

I did this when I was in high school, I hit some guy running the ball up the middle and I stripped it from him and next thing I know my helmet gets ripped off and I just took off running then got tackled at like the 2 yard line. Then the next play I had to sit out and our qb kneed it and then my coach was like “go finish what you started” so he made me go in for him and run a qb sneak so I got a td that game
