Bill McPeak coached the first Redskins team to play in D.C. Stadium in 1961. On October 1, 1961, the New York Giants spoiled the Redskins debut in their palatial new home with a 24-21 victory before 36,367 fans. Incidentally, the Redskins were celebrating their 25th anniversary season in the Nation's Capitol.

Another fantastic NFL (Blair) Films production. I could watch these all day.
@armorybrunotjr.32043 жыл бұрын
Blair Motion Pictures started these NFL highlight films in 1962, beginning with the World Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium. All it took was a Philadelphia coat maker named Ed Sabol, who was filming his son,Steve, playing college football with a Bell and Howell camera. To do this big game, Blair Motion Pictures got the then-14 team league to pay $400,000 apiece to film this game. Chris Schenkel, then a CBS broadcaster, narrated. It proved successful. In 1965, the NFL took over the company and it was renamed NFL Films. (A bit of trivia: Blair is Ed Sabol's daughter .)

Notice how most of the pass plays are thrown DOWNFIELD as opposed to today’s preponderance for short passes. The NFL today isn’t even close to as entertaining as the old days.

@@lloydkline1518 I'd wish Cleveland's baseball team stayed the Indians. Poor Louis Sockalexis is turning in his grave. The Indians were allegedly named for Sockalexis,in 1915, a Penobscot who was believed to be the first Native American to play in the majors. He played for the old Cleveland Spiders from 1897-99. Getting rid of Chief Wahoo was sad; a block "C" motif and the name Indians did not take, so in 2021 it was dropped.

When the team in Washington had a name
@armorybrunotjr.32042 жыл бұрын
I still say there is nothing wrong with the name Redskins. It was not intended to be a racial slur. In 1992, former owner Jack Kent Cooke tried to convince a Native American that Redskins was not a dig at his people. Cooke contended the name Redskins meant pride, not dishonor. Commanders is just an okay name. HTTR!
@theprofessor8589 Жыл бұрын
@@armorybrunotjr.3204 Jack Kent Cooke was never the most 'racially sensitive' person around, so for you to say he 'assured' an indigenous person that there was nothing wrong with that obviously racist name is both scary and laughable at the same time. The name was racist, simple and plain.
@armorybrunotjr.3204 Жыл бұрын
@@theprofessor8589 My story stands. At least Jack Kent Cooke was a real owner. The owner who was more racist was the man who brought the Redskins to D.C. was George Preston Marshall, but it wasn't over the name. Marshall refused to integrate the Redskins during the 1950s, when the league had black talent. It wasn't until 1962, when he was forced to the locker room of his new home in D.C. Stadium or he'd suffer serious consequences.
@theprofessor8589 Жыл бұрын
@@armorybrunotjr.3204 Actually Marshall did way more to help build the NFL into a first rate league than JKC, and brought a first rate product to DC, so to say JKC was a 'real owner' is misleading at best. Was Marshall a psychotic racist? Yes, the NFL version of Donald J Trump.

I think this was the first year the Cowboys used silver uniforms, replacing the white. I think the Redskins ditched the strange featherstripe, with the spear and feather logos on the helmets. Redskins defense here looks stronger than in the Otto Graham years - 1966-68.

The Redskins had the maroon helmets with the feather stripe between 1959-64. In 1965, they changed to the spear and feather helmets; they were much easier to see if a game was on television.

@@armorybrunotjr.3204 Yes, and those unis, from 1965-1968, were classics, copied endlessly by semipro, college and high school squads for years to come. They were modified in Vince Lombardi's only year as coach, to a magenta colored helmet and lighter gold pants. This is my all-time favorite of all gridiron togs. Other classics, IMHO: 49ers, Chargers, 1966 -1973, Oilers' silver, 1968, 1970, 1971, then Columbia blue helmets, 1972 -1974, and Broncos, 1968 -1996 (with slight variations), early New Orleans Saints, 1967-1969, Falcons (red helmets/black jerseys, 1966 -1970, Cowboys (charcoal pants/royal blue jerseys,) 1969 -1974, Bengals, 1968 -1980, and Eagles, 1974 -1984, then Buddy Ryan era, 1985 -1996.
