Dave Butz recently fought a battle with covid and had to be hospitalized and hooked up to a ventilator according to John Riggins on the John Riggins show, but thankfully he recovered and is doing well. Dave Butz has always been one of the toughest men in the NFL and in life! Hail to Dave Butz! Hail to the Redskins!

I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years after he retired. He then was wearing his SB XXII ring on his middle finger, as he dropped weight to about 260. He told me that he took up carving duck decoys in order to stave off arthritis in his hands.

The game up in New England 1978 is illustrative of what Butz could do. One minute to go. New England ahead and running the ball to kill the clock. They are on their own 30. Butz breaks through the line. Strips the ball. Dusek recovers and scores the winning TD.

Any notice how fast Butz was to wrap up legs and feet during his tackles. When I stopped watching football there was a lot less of that instinctive wrapping up the legs during a tackle. Everyone had the instinct to make a big hit though. I got sick of the big hits because players would celebrate them even after the offense got the first down. Game changed too much, had to stop watching.

As good as our D-tackles Payne and Allen are, they are not Dave Butz. Butz consistently faced double and sometimes triple teams and beat them. Grant often faced double teams and beat them.
