Not only is this performance important because it was so soon after 9/11 I also think it's important for all Irish-Americans as it helps shows the impact Irish people have had on the US, an impact which I feel is massively understated. Also so many of the firefighters who passed away on 9/11 were of Irish descent.

I can't put into words what it was like then, When at half time the team I grew up with was neck and neck with the Greatest Show On Turf, and my favorite rock band delivers a heartfelt tribute to the victims of 9/11. I cried. Unashamedly. And then the Pats won, and it was like WWII had ended, people were out in the streets in our little suburban neighborhood yelling, cars were blowing their horns up and down the street...it was a glorious moment.

The performance is so good, you can almost forgive Larry Mullen Jr’s mesh shirt. Heh, a friend of mine and I were playing pool at this place called “Temple Billiards” in Seattle. We didn’t know U2 was playing a few blocks away at the Kingdome (when that was a thing). They had an after-party planned there. The security was trying to boot us and a couple of other groups of people there. I never spoke to him, but I could hear Bono tell them “no don’t, they’re fine, leave them alone...”
@great_live_music
@great_live_music 3 жыл бұрын
The mesh shirt is indeed... 90ish Berlin era-esque... And for the rest, Bono, despite being hated by a lot of people, is quite a "normal guy" (if you can be normal doing that kind of job) so I'm not surprised by his reaction.

I was only two during this, so of course I don’t have recollection of this, but damn does this bring tears to my eyes, seeing all the names go up especially and the symbolism of the world having our back. Truly cathartic and graceful. Also, what makes even more emotional is how United our country was then. It’s scary and sad how divided our country is 20 years later. It’s as if we need bad things to happen to unite our country. Very sad

When it comes to acting, the trope which is always thrown around is every once in a while the stars align for a perfect actor being cast to play a perfect character. Examples of this are James Gandolfini/Tony Soprano, Brian Cranston/Walter White, Michael Richards/Kramer, etc. So what does that have to do with a Super Bowl halftime show? This is an example of the stars aligning for the perfect band to perform the perfect set a time when it was needed most. People can say whatever they want about U2. Very polarizing band. I happen to fall somewhere in the middle. I like some of their work. But I never go out of my way to listen to it. But for this moment a few short months after 9/11, there has never been a band more perfectly positioned in every possible way to approach a moment like this for our country and completely nail to the extent it had rabid football fans tearing up during an 11 minute performance. I still get goosebumps thinking about it all these years later.
