I remember Ken Norton Jr. talking about his time under Jimmy Johnson. He said after losses you better not be playing around on the plane ride home because you might not be on the team the following week. The fear and hatred of losing was paramount and Jimmy Johnson had everyone by the balls. This team has never rebounded from Jimmy leaving.

Barry and Troy respect eachother as men but they weren’t good for eachother in college or in the NFL. Two completely different types of competitors. And there’s no such thing as a roster ANYONE can win a Super Bowl with. Barry had the whole locker room all but for one guy. Ultimately what disrupted Dallas’s momentum was that as toxic as Barry and Troy seemed to be for eachother, Jimmy and Jerry were worse. If either one of them knew how to get over themselves and stick it out, Barry would’ve never been hired as Jimmy could’ve continued on. That all being said, being a hard ass like Jimmy only works with a loaded roster. Once the team begins to struggle, NFL athletes will turn on a guy like Jimmy in nothing flat. See: Bill Parcels and Jim Harbaugh. Jerry is only Dallas’s favorite son because he signs the checks. If he were a hired GM he would’ve been shitcanned a long time ago.

Aikman could've been selfish and wanted to throw 30+ times /game so he could have 4500 yards passing and 35tds, but he only cared about winning. He knew not turning the ball over, letting Emmitt and the big Oline wear down the D, helped their own D. So many games were close at half, then Emimitt would start breaking runs that were 3 or 4 yards in the first half for 12 or 15 yards.

I watched that 1994 game vs the 49ers. The Cowboys were down 21-0 in the first quarter due to turnovers. However, watching the rest of the game...the Cowboys actually outplayed San Francisco. If Jimmy coaches that team...I don't believe the 49ers win.

Pksoze Yep. After the Cowboys spotted the 49ers that 21-0 lead, they outscored them 28-17, and they outgained them by a pretty large margin. Deion Sanders committed pass interference that wasn't called, at a critical point in the game, and Barry drew a flag from the sideline for bumping into an official. When the team needed him to set an example, he fell to pieces and the team fell apart with him. Three weeks later, the cameras caught him sitting on the bench munching a hot dog at the Pro Bowl.

I guess you didn't watch as much of Troy Aikman as I did. Troy was calm, but he was also really big time on preparation. He believed full-heart-edly that's that's where games were won, unlike Brett Favre who relied on his incredible talent to just role out of bed and win football games on Sundays. Troy was the opposite of Brett in that regard. He was like Jerry Rice in that he believed that how much you work in practice determines how well you'll do on Sunday. Rich Gannon was another quarterback who was normally calm, but absolutely could not stand it when guys didn't prepare the way they were supposed to. And yes, Troy Aikman was calm, that is on point about him, but he wanted maximum effort out of first himself, but also everybody else.

Michael Leibowitz Slinging the ball yeah. I know he went to camps and stuff, at least till the end. Not saying he's the laziest, but he didn't consistently work nearly as hard as Peyton Manning, Steve Young, John Elway & some of the others, including Troy Aikman. He was probably a little bit better than Aikman overall, but Aikman prepared harder than Favre for sure. Jon Gruden, who was one of the Packers Offensive coaches in Favre's 1st few yr. in Green Bay, talked about how Brett would show up, but that he'd just coast through practices. Never would he stay late to work w/ any of the developing receivers on route combinations to help develop them in the offense, like Peyton Manning or Steve Young always did, or come to extra curricular workouts like Jerry Rice or John Elway did. The second regular mandatory practice was over. it was always just like where can I get a good beer in town? w/ Favre. That is sort of what made Favre Favre though, and he was unbelievable for so long, but he really didn't do things the scholarly way in games either, not going through his progressions like Young or Montana would, which got on Mike Holmgren's nerves a lot. Brett just wanted to make plays, which he did a whole lot of, as well as mistakes (tee-hee-hee!).

It's important to bear in mind how much rule changes have benefited QBs over the years. Take Joe Namath. By today's standards, his career stats are unimpressive to say the least. But he played his entire career before the pass-friendly rule changes that were implemented in 1978. When he had time to throw, that man could thread the needle as good as any QB currently playing the game.

Many of those same players have said Michael Irvin was a huge voice in that locker room that everyone listened too as well. Longtime journalists Skip Bayless and Jeff Pearlman who both covered the Cowboys back then have mentioned this also. And in this clip where Aikman asks Irvin to suit up for practice despite being hurt so there's another voice out there to light a fire under the team also proves how big of an influence he was on this team. Even Charles Haley, with all of his personal demons, was a leader on the defense.

Barry Switzer was a totally different coach in Dallas than he was at Oklahoma. In his heart, and I think we all know it looking back, Switzer was done coaching when he resigned in 1989 from Oklahoma. When the Cowboys came with an offer for the best coaching job in football and an enormous amount of money, he absolutely took it. The Switzer at Oklahoma was a badass leader that cultivated an incredibly strong team culture during his time there. He had a way of creating an 'Us vs. Them' attitude and the players wanted to please him. He was cocky and the reason why OU was widely seen as the nastiest group of football players during his time there, and most successful. As West Virginia head coach Dana Holgerson put it just 2 weeks ago in reference to Switzer's Oklahoma teams, "Oklahoma invented intimidation". You better believe Switzer was the reason why.

That's what made Jimmy so great was that he knew how to get the most out of his players. He knew how to motivate them and press the right buttons. Jimmy's coaching style never changed and he never was lackadaisical like Barry's was at the end of his career. Jimmy knew again how to lay the law down and get the most of out of his players and this quote perfectly describes how great Jimmy was. "Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a person as if he were where he could be and should be, and he will become what he could be and should be." That's how he molded a team of losers of 1989 into winners in 92.

I was always curious to know what happened during the later years of Aikman's career because not much is said about it because of the struggles the Cowboys had. The thing I am glad to see from this video is that you can tell Aikman was still giving it everything he had in the later half of his career and that he tried to be what the team needed when it was the coaches' jobs to do what he was forced to do in terms of holding players accountable for their mistakes.

Mora, Seahawks Norv Turner, Chargers Steve Spagnuolo, Rams Josh McDaniels, Broncos Chan Gailey, Bills Tom Cable, Raiders Wade Philips, Cowboys Lane Kiffin, Raiders Todd Haley, Chiefs Raheem Morris, Buccaneers Jim Schwartz, Lions Mike Smith, Falcons Chip Kelly, Eagles Marc Trestman, Bears Chuck Pagano, Colts Jason Garrett, Cowboys Adam Gase, Dolphins/Jets Jay Gruden, FootballTeam Bill O'Brien, Texans Gus Bradley, Jaguars Steve Wilkes, Cardinals Freddie Kitchens, Browns NOTES: -I did this all from memory, and tried to do it chronologically the best I could. -Tried to include every team at least once to give every fan base a chuckle, but a couple teams have had such little coaching turnover due to how good the coaching is (NE, NO, PIT, GB, BAL). Also teams with little coaching turnover rate, but less successful results than group above (CIN, TEN). -Not saying these teams never respected these coaches! This is more aimed at when the coach departed the team. Yes, it is possible for a team to still adore a departing coach (See Andy Reid/Eagles and Jim Harbaugh/49ers) -This was just for fun, hope you enjoyed!

It seems like the college coaches who are hard on their players (such as Jimmy Johnson or Jim Harbaugh) and treat them like kids and yell at them are the best ones...look at the 49ers and how much they suck now without Jim Harbaugh screaming at his players...best teams these days have discipline and holds teammates accountable.

The fact that he could sense their decline before the 95 is crazy. He saw it coming and couldn’t stop it
