Agreed. Parcells was maniacal about getting people to play up to their abilities. Moreover.....Parcells was a firm believer in having players who were bigger and stronger than other teams. Great video and you really can't argue with the listing. The 1990 NFC Championship game is probably in the top 3 "what if" moments and history altering events in league history. The Bills would've had a better chance to win SB 25 against the Niners in that they had a great defense but I don't think they would've schemed the way the Giants did and be able to play ball control on offense. Joe Montana still had some great years left in him but that hit totally obliterated any chance of that and led to him being extremely injury prone but he still had some magic. Steve Young, well who knows what would've happened there and then the whole specter of whether Parcells would've "retired" or try another kick at the can which in itself could've radically alter Belichick's career. Who knows? Maybe he never ends up in New England?

It wouldn't have been a foregone conclusion.

they would've had a better chance against the Niners??? Are people forgetting that the Niners were the 2-time defending SB champs, started out 1990 10-0, finished the year 14-2, had a team that seemed unstoppable. The Bills put up massive points and had some fantastic players on offense and defense, but the AFC was far inferior to the NFC by 1990....and the Bills division (the AFC East) was arguably the weakest in the NFL at that time--the Colts, Jets, and Patriots were atrocious by the early 90s). The 1990 Niners were far superior to the 1990 Dolphins and Raiders (the 2 teams the Bills beat handily in the AFC playoffs that year). The Niners would've beaten the Bills that SB. But the Giants beat BOTH teams

The 1990 week 13 Monday Night Football game should have been on this list. Both teams were 10-0 and looking ahead to their showdown, but then both teams lost in week 12. This was the game where Jim Burt got Ronnie Lott angry for the game by telling him that Phil Simms said he was washed up. Lott sprained both his knees during the game -- one of them severely enough that he was out for the rest of the regular season. He sprained his other knee in the 4th quarter, had to be helped off the field, and then came back in time for their goal-line stand. The game also had the highest attendance of any game ever played at Candlestick park, because of the months of buildup.

Eli is better than him on every stats. Aikman is purely overrated in my opinion. Yes he won 3SBs but with a super dominate cowboys team. He only has 160ish TDS, not even half of Eli. @@minif4046 Different eras different expectations. Comparing a QB drafted in the 80s stats with a QB drafted in 04 is foolish. I hate the Giants. Doesn't matter the season, whenever we play each other, I always want the 49ers to win. They've been the cause of more heartbreaking losses in franchise history compared to any other team. Even when compared to Dallas and Green Bay in my opinion. The 1986 49-3 beatdown, the 1990 NFC Championship, and the 2011 NFC Championship. I think the two teams have met each other in the playoffs more than any other two in the Super Bowl era. I already knew what the number one game on your list was when I clicked this video. As a 49ers fan, that 1990 NFC Championship game loss was the most demoralizing game in franchise history. The team was on the cusp of winning a 3 third straight Super Bowl, and I don't think any other team has come closer. If only Montana didn't get hit, or Craig didn't fumble. Steve Young would have started against the Bills, so that would have been something interesting. Anyways, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Gotta take the good with the bad. That's the life of a sports fan.

TheLoneDraftsman..........Erik Howard made a great play fighting through a double-team block to be in position to hit Craig while Jesse Sapolu tackled him to the ground. Lawrence Taylor fought through two blocks by Brent Jones and Tom Rathman in order to be in position to recover the fumble that Erik Howard forced. The hit on Montana was a case study on 'never giving up' demonstrated by the relentless pursuit by Leonard Marshall and Lawrence Taylor. The 49ers were defeated by a total team effort. Parcells was a genius when it came to pushing a player's button and getting him to play above his ability. @@byrongammonbyrongammon9937 What I remember about that 1990 game was the Giants seemed jinxed all game. In the first quarter Megget on an option play found a wide open Giant fullback, who dropped the ball. So, they had to settle for a FG. They were winning 6-3 right before the half, then on 3rd down got a questionable roughing the passer call which extended the drive to FG range and it was 6-6 halftime. Then, Bryant missed a chip shot FG in the 3rd quarter. Finally, on the epic play where Montana was knocked out, he had fumbled the ball and at least 2 Giants had it but couldn't hold on and SF recovered. So, every break seemed to go SF's way. Until the last break went the Giant's way, the Craig fumble. Still, give Hostelter credit on the final drive, they were way out of FG range, about the SF 40 yard line. He needed 2 big passes to get them in FG range.

I have been in a fan of SF since 98' all I have known is heartache few teams fielded worthy 17' Cle but with a little luck won a few games. Worst loss since 98': (Top 5) 1) Sea vs SF NFC Championship 13' (injury top G Iupati, no roughing kicker calls, 4th & 30 hail mary that worked, Sherman meme of all time)2) Bal vs SF Superbowl 12' (it was a blow out what made it ok they fought back what made it bad they didn't run the damn ball for the final plays in 5. No bootleg or Gore run. Like Sea loss with Lynch in SB but not as bad lol).3) NYG vs SF NFC Championship 11' (1st year in playoff in a decade so not much expected. Played NYG tough but Eli did what he did to NE twice in SB.)4) STL vs SF Final Game for the division 10' (Benched Alex Smith for some bum. Said QB completed 3 passes 2 ints & one lucky almost int slipped defender hands & accidentally caught & scored. Alex comes back in 3rd almost wins game). Gave the world beastquake cause Sea won division.5) 04' when won 2 games & barely beat AZ in OT to not go winless or 99' Rams end 24 something consecutive losses to SF by blowning them out in STL by like 40+. I'm happy cause GM Lynch + Coach Shannahan will bring back glory soon. Even Bill Walsh had bad seasons 2-14 & 6-10 with 8 game losing streak.

These two teams had some epic battles during those gsmes. If it wasn't for the Giants, the 49ers would've had more Superbowl titles in the 80's into the early 90's. The Giants eliminated them in the playoffs in '85, '86, and '90. Guess who the Giants' defensive coordinator was to slow down that West Coast offense? You guessed it, Bill Belichick! Interesting! 🤔

Great video, Great Memories, Great Football... And cudda had the Monday night game in 1990 season included as well , both at 10-1, and had a defensive battle with 49ers... winning 7-3... Only 1 thing during the video that I disliked was saying in the 1990 championship game that the "best player on the field came up with the big play"- yes,he recovers the fumble, but it was really Erik Howard's amazing slice thru a double team block to jar the ball loose from Craig that made the play and deserves the mention...

The 1990 Monday Night Football matchup that saw the 49ers win 7-3 ought to be on this list above the 1986 Giants comeback on Monday Night. Lowest scoring game in the history of the rivalry. No points in the second half for either team. A true slugfest.

Also side note, the 1988 week 2 game is interesting, because the 49ers had lost 3 straight times to the Giants, including twice in the playoffs in New York. Bill Belichick had taken over as defensive coordinator in 1985, and that is when the problems really started against Bill Walsh's squad. In that game, Bill Walsh was playing musical chairs with Joe Montana, and Steve Young. Young was lackluster in the first half, and eventually replaced by Joe after halftime. If the 49ers don't win that game with that Rice miracle bomb they don't make the playoffs, and the Giants would win the NFC East with an 11-5 record. Instead they were on the outside looking in with a 10-6 record behind the LA Rams. Phil Simms famously accused the 49ers of "laying down like dogs" when they depended them beating the Rams to get into the playoffs in the final week of the season, but didn't.

Reyna Thompson was called for a neutral zone infraction on Cofer's missed 51 yarder. He then made a 46 yarder after that to put the Niners ahead, otherwise the Giants would have had all of the momentum and the ball going the other way.

"An ending like no other in playoff history" because the referees made an egregious error that ended the game. We're not talking a controversial penalty call or non-call like pass interference, we are talking about the referee forgetting that the receiver downfield actually did report in as an eligible receiver, and then throwing the flag anyway, and negating the pass interference call which would have given the Giants the ball inside the five, and ending the game without even allowing the receiver to remind them that yes, he DID report in and WAS eligible. No game that results in the NFL apologizing for the officiating at the ending should be #2 on any list unless it is of blunders.
