The extra games are not to be underrated. For example, since their first SB win with Mahomes, the Chiefs have played nearly an entire extra season’s worth of games (13 total) just in the playoffs. That takes a mighty toll on players.

Those early 90s Cowboy & 49er games were something. The teams were stacked with stars all over the place. I recall one game where John Madden had a shot of the offense and defense lined up for a play, he basically ticked every name onscreen were all pro bowlers. This was also right in the middle of the NFC's dominance in the Super Bowl. At this period people said the real Super Bowl was the NFC Championship.

Mahomes has the physical tools to succeed there and Brady's NFL career began in the early 2000s which wasn't that far off from the 1990s era so he can still have success as long the teams were at least decently run. Likely have a number in line with Jim Kelly's since Brady's numbers were in the same level outside of 1991 in the initial dynasty years, just not record setting. And definitely wouldn't have lasted much long after a decade.

Both the Broncos and 49ers misses a three-peat by also shanking a playoff game the year before. The 97 Broncos choked against the Jags and the 87 Niners choked against the Vikings. Both teams were like 13-2. That 87 49er teams also has an odd twist. Montana got hurt early in the 3rd-to-last game against the Bears. Young came in and destroyed the Bears winning 41-0. Then they beat the Falcons and Rams 35-7 and 48-0 with Young. They outscored opponents 124-7. Then Montana came back and Vikings made history.

The closest one was the 1990 49ers. If Roger Craig doesn't fumble that ball, the 49ers most likely get that one more first down to ice the clock away. For the 90's Cowboys, if Jerry's ego didn't get the better of him, Jimmy's Cowboys don't go down 21-0 to the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship after 3 possessions. Jimmy has that team ready. The 70's Steelers, even if Franco and Rocky were hurt, the Raiders on that day were a better team.

Leonard Marshall's hit on Montana, while devastating (he literally rode his body down to the ground, flattened him and fracturing his sternum, while twisting his hand giving him a spiral fracture) it didn't knock him out for the subsequent two seasons. Montana's notoriously bad elbow did that. I love that Montana still holds a tiny grudge against the Niners for moving on. In an interview he related a story where DeBartolo (or Carmen Policy?) said it all worked out because they got another SB win with Steve Young and Montana responded that they would've gotten a FEW more if they kept him! After years of healing, it seems clear that the '92 & '93 Niners simply didn't have enough of a running game or pass defense to beat those Cowboys, but it would've been interesting to see what a wily veteran Montana might've come up with.

Well I can understand Montana's bitterness. But at the same time he missed a complete season, and was a big risk health-wise. it was a cold-blooded move, but it ultimately proved to be the right one. And really who knows how well Montana plays if he stayed a 49er, or if he would ever win again. What we do know is that the 49ers got 8 more years of HOF QB play, and another SB win. Pretty good trade considering the alternative pitfalls.

By the time around 1996 to 1998 Niners were shadow of former self. Young was magnificent both years, but like you mentioned, the lack of a pass D (specifically a pass rush) greatly hindered their ability to thwart the balanced attack of the 'Boys. This is why the Buffalo Bills of the 90s were so remarkable. No, they didn't win but to even get to the Super Bowl is hard enough, getting to two in a row is even harder and three back to back to back is nearly impossible, let alone winning the damn things. Marv Levy's boys did it four times in a row and it's too bad Levy never got a ring, he was one of my favorite coaches of all time (I'm not a Bills fan). I respect ANY team that makes the Super Bowl whether they win or not.

90 Bills had a better roster on paper than 90 Giants, but chocked. I think the NFC won the Superbowl like 13 straight times, with only 2 times it was close, some of that had to do with the best AFC Teams not always advancing to the Superbowl, which amount to blowouts in a lot of those Superbowls.
