Some NFT bro's stole my artwork recently. what was interesting was how quickly and easily the artwork was taken down when the host of these images was faced with proof of ownership and a DMCA. This created a big stir in the community as a fair few people had bought nfts and the person minting the artworks had his whole account taken down over the theft. I ended up E-Mailing the origional JPG file to all the people who had thought they bought the artwork (it was free to use as non commercial anyway) . All I got from the whole experience was how vulnerable and stupid this system was.

A friend of mine draws Adult Anime stuff for commissions and she keeps a portfolio on a website (you know the ones you see KZbinrs shucking, Square something) so prospective clients can see what's on the menu. One day she found out all of her stuff, ranging from small animations to 4K spreads were being sold as NFTs on Open Sea and some other sites. It messed her up as the stuff she put on her site was thing that she did on her time, along with other artwork that was agreed to be shared by customers. I wouldn't be suprised if her stuff is getting chunked through some AI Art generator as well.
@Azmeaiel
@Azmeaiel Жыл бұрын
@@ThatGuyNamedRick yeh, if she has that all backed up, get her to find where the HOST of the nft's are. she can simply send the link to where she is hosting her files (earlier than the nft's) ie these files were stolen from this host and usually the hott will very quickly take down the nft's if not outright delete the persons account or permenantly ban them. As for ai's they train off our images but don't store them and cut and paste bits like many people seem to think. Its not an issue of them stealing a copyrighted part of an image but them using the artists work without our knowledge to train the AI then profiting from this process down the track. The ammount of false positives from real people are currently keeping AI art quite bad in most cases.

It really shows you that none of these people have actually looked at the ETH blockchain. I hadn't until after I wrote the first sentence of this comment, because why bother? Your "art" is stored as a transaction ID in your 256 bit address as a string of letters which is usually a URL referencing an IPFS file where the "art" is stored. IPFS is just a distributed storage system analogous to a torrent. If people stop hosting it or any part of it gets permanently dropped, your NFT is gone in exactly the same way that a torrent is gone. I don't care about NFTs at all and I now know more than 99. percent of crypto bros, and if you read this comment, you do too. Its a URL to a torrent, and as we all know, torrents are forever, right? LOL.

A lot of defense for NFTs was that it wasn't owning the image but owning the place on the blockchain and it just linking to said image. Now people are suddenly surprised that they don't own the image itself and the thing their place in the chain links to can be changed to anything at anytime. It is legitimately sad for the few artists that didn't see through the BS with NFTs and willingly put theirs up as NFTs due to the promised long term support, just to have the NFT bros go "no we don't want to so we won't". Not even going into the rampant art theft for NFTs.

Kira: what makes this even funnier is that it also invalidates the typical NFT-bro response, when confronted about the realities of link rot or someone just switching the image on the other end of the URL out for something else, to suggest that "most NFTs use IPFS now, and you can't change what those point to (and they're decentralized, so we'll pretend they'll never be subjected to the same sort of link rot that a normal URL is subject to)!"... because those NFTs *did* use IPFS, for their images. They didn't change what the picture was, on the other end, the smart contracts had an API function they could call to just... let them replace the IPFS link itself, to one that points at the hilarious animated middle finger person. Turns out most NFTs these days work like that, the only part of them that's truly "immutable" is the token itself, every single piece of the metadata that gives the token any context? All subject to change, after the fact.

NFT's as an infrastructure evolution is very misunderstood by people hungry for get rich quick and scammers. This tech's only for verification and authenticity. In the future NFT's will work without you knowing you're using them, you'll buy a ticket for a concert and will enter with a verification from an app (that will be a wallet but you don't need to know). What Kira is showing is: even though you can be "verified" that you bought a concert ticket they can still block you at the entrance (if you go naked for example), you're not really entitled to anything it's still their rules. Auth+verification can still be a very powerful but of course this narrative doesn't suit scammers and get rich quick schemes because people want to invest when there's nothing for people to really invest on yet, you have to let the engineers build something more solid first.

A lot of people don't really get the receipt metaphor because most receipts actually say what you bought, thereby giving proof of purchase. I think NFTs are more like buying the key to a storage locker that is in a building you do not own. You may have the key, but you do not own the locker, nor do you have physical access to what you were told is in that locker. The maintenance folk probably have keys also, so they might end up accessing or changing that locker without your knowledge or consent. And if the building gets sold or the owner decides to go out of the storage locker business, you're suddenly the proud owner of a key to nothing.

Now, legally, and hilariously, the best part of this is that trying to claim royalties on secondary resale of something that you sold someone violates established consumer rights laws. *If* NFTs are unique and singular art objects, *then* then once you sell it to someone, you have zero control of how they dispose of it. You can't sell an object then act like you still have ownership rights over that object and are entitled to a say or a portion of the sale. People have *tried* this shit, and they were smacked down in US courts. So the protest... Is them protesting the violation of a contractual agreement that any court would declare is illicit. So, not only do the NFT bros have no idea how image hosting works on the internet, the NFT's creators have no idea how consumer law works.

omg I might have to make my own video on this because I LITERALLY predicted this exact scenario! I'm so happy to see it actually come to fruition lol. Like most NFTs are just URLs to some traditional image hosting service. If the creator of the NFTs also owns the server the images are hosted on, well they have absolute control over them. The URL can be thought of as just pointing to a dedicated space on a server, and the server owner can choose to fill that space with whatever they want. Thus if they wanted to, they could swap out the data stored in that space with whatever they wanted. Thus the 'perfect immutable non-fungible token' is actually just entirely at the whims of the server owners. Even if the creator of the NFT doesn't own the server it's stored on, if that service goes down at some point, all those links will just be dead and you won't be able to access that image anymore. (Unless of course you right clicked and saved it directly lol)

So basically; An NFT is a key to a door. You do not own the door. You do not own what’s behind the door. You do not own anything connected to the door. The door isn’t even attached to anything. Anything can happen to this door at any point in the future, without either your knowledge or consent, as you do not own it. It can even be completely demolished or erased. If anything happens to this door, the key will have no other use, or potential of obtaining a use. I have placed a PNG on the door. I am charging 12 million bucks for the key. This is totally not a scam. That about right?
