LaMotta was one tough dude. Very much like Carmen Basilio, who also had some epic fights with Robinson. That said, I'd rather be a boxer who was hard to hit than one who could take a beating and stay on his feet.

One of the greatest matches in history. Two experts each anticipating the other's next move until it becomes a kind of ballet, or dance. This is sublime. Also, go to the public library and request via interlibrary loan a copy of A. J. Liebling's book in the early 'fifties The Sweet Science, and read it. This is the history of that era by one of the greatest journalist/ essayists ever.

One of the greatest matches? It was completely one-sided, no? Give LaMotta his due for standing up to that punishment, but the fight was called The St. Valentines Day Massacre.

@@jamesanthony5681 Yeah . . . but Jake had his day on Feb 5th 1943 winning a unanimous decision over Sugar Ray. Knocked Sugar Ray down in the 8th and beat him up most of the fight. How many can say they beat probably the greatest fighter of all time ! And Jake would always say . . . You never knocked me down Ray !
@jamesanthony5681Ай бұрын
@@johnkozar1216 True. Jake knocked him down, got the decision, and they fought again two weeks later, with Ray getting the win. Incredible.
They weren't so much athletes but real fighters who gave all in each fight.

You really don't know much about being an athlete then. I've talked with many great athletes and they believe speed, quick reflexes, endurance, strength, agility, and the ability to endure physical pain are the physical qualities that are characteristic of great athletes. If you think your a good athlete . . . step in the ring and spar just 3 rounds . . . you'll learn a lot about what it takes to being an athlete.

Interesting prequel to this story. My Godfather, Steve Belloise, originally had the title shot against the champion Marcel Cerdan, but LaMotta took a dive against a black fighter, Billy Fox. the Mob made money and Jake was rewarded with by the Mob guys who bumped my uncle and got the shot for LaMotta. Cerdan dislocated his shoulder in the first round and LaMotta won the fight, LaMotta said he would fight the winner of Robinson Belloise fight. Robinson beat Belloise and then beat LaMotta. My Uncle had suspended his boxing career to join the US Navy passing up a title shot after Pearl Harbor. Steve Belloise a great gentleman and patriot.

@@blkmamba40 Lol, true. Any doubters just need to check a site like boxrec. For example, David Tua is listed as winning 52 fights, 43 by way of knockout. But a bunch of TKOs are included among those KOs. That's the way they always do it.
