Hi, a very important question, if I have two ngrave wallet devices , and I perfectly start generating a private key in both devices at the exact same time, and then I press freeze on both devices at exactly the same time, do I get the same private key in both devices? Just want to make sure every device will make different private keys even though we press freeze at exactly the same time.

The top plate is unique for every time we send one out. So your GRAPHENE top plate is always unique. Yes, this is the case. The operating temperature is below the freezing point, and also comfortably works above 60 degrees Celsius if you'd want to try that out. If you drop it, generally the device should still work, but you can compare it with a stronger smartphone: the idea is to not just drop it. That's also why your backup GRAPHENE is important. The product comes with a warranty yes!

the security is great and all, you've done a fantastic job on it. but I wonder how long will this device last? this has 1200mah battery. how long does the battery last on stand by? can you keep it and not use it for years and will it still be in a good condition? I plan to hodl my coins there and wait for the right time to use it.

Hi Pro Gamer - the usage is about 500mah per hour, so you can use it intensively for around 2 hours and you can charge it (in the wall). The battery is smartphone-grade, so even it you'd be using it daily on a regular basis, after 2 years, it would still run at 90% capacity. If you wouldn't use it for a long time and then turn it on again, this would be no issue either. Do note of course, that the real place to back-up your keys is on GRAPHENE, a non-electronics based backup solution that is really ment to be the long term storage of your seed. Hope this helps!

Hi Ivan, we are in the final innings of our integration with both Metamask and Rabby, and have created a clearly defined QR-code standardized format for the industry. This means that other hot wallets will be able to use our sdk to seamlessly integrate these QR-codes on their side, ensuring smooth interactions with ZERO. Hi Ramon, you can simply tap on "Add coin" and type in the coin you want to add to your wallet. We will notify you of new firmware updates very clearly whenever they are available and generally, these will include new coin support.

Except for the « Graphene » solution to back up your private key which is good, I don’t really understand the fondamental difference between a Ledger and a Ngrave « Zero ». The main difference seems to be about the way the private key is generated ? Is it ?

Hi Gabriel, the short version is that we approach security from a different perspective: end-to-end; whereas ledger and trezor basically stop with the hardware wallet , and then give you a paper wallet as a backup, we have taken the end-to-end mindset answering all the "what-if"s: we give you a ZERO, then in case you lose that ZERO, there is a metal, encrypted backup (also the first recoverable in the industry) - GRAPHENE - and even if you lose your backup, we made it recoverable. Finally, even if you pass away tomorrow, (unfortunate), your next of kin has a means of getting to your keys without any third party (not even NGRAVE ) knowing what your key is (note that the latter will be implemented after October 2020). Regarding the ZERO itself: it is 100% offline (so no more usb, bluetooth, or any other network connections), so the last remaining attack vectors are gone completely. Also the peace of mind is of a whole other dimension: you never feel online so you never need to feel anxious about using your device. For physical attacks; we have also tamper proofed the device on many, many different layers (yes, we also have a secure element, from 2020), and finally, we have our overarching OS certified EAL7, the highest in the world; eg ledger nano x has 5, and only on the secure element level. Finally, all of this is designed and packaged in a beautiful touch screen device, intuitive, easy to use, and because of the 100% offline aspect, a whole new leve lof peace of mind (as already mentioned). The 100% offline feature is the major one from my point of view, even if you improve in a substantial way issues or difficulties encountered by other cold wallets with your graphene solution. I’ve seen in another of your videos that the Zero support the passphrase feature. Is there a kind of passphrase associated to your « perfect key », or is it for imported wallets with « classic » recovery phrases only ?

@@louferlou8752 Hi Gabriel, the passphrase can be used both for mnemonic wallets as for wallets based on the perfect key. In essence, the perfect key and mnemonic 24 word phrases can be converted into each other by the device. The main premise of the perfect key is that its format allows for key manipulation and user interaction during the generation process, it makes it possible to completely split up the key on the Graphene, etc. But so, in conclusion, you can use a passphrase with the NGRAVE Key as well :)

Hi Moflex! Yes exactly, you will be able to easily transfer coins from any other wallet to your ZERO. You just have to create a wallet or account on ZERO and then send the funds to it (ideally you white list your ZERO addresses on your Coinbase account, so that transfers are swift and easy).

Also with the one way QR code your information will be sent to your phone, displaying all your crypto and their current value on the market? So everytime you send or receive crypto, you would need to sync it to your phone using the QR code for the information on the phone to be updated? And one more thing. You would only need you phone to basically have your information compared to the current market value, etc, but it's not necessary to make any transactions, correct?

Your app will then have real time access to the blockchain to anything that ever happens to these addresses in a real-time fashion. The Air-gapped feature and feeling of the ZERO is that you remain fully offline and unconnected when 1) creating your master key and accounts and 2) signing transactions. Our advantage is that the USB is isolated in a separate boot mode contained within the EAL7-certified secure firmware part of our device. This means that to enable USB, you have to reboot the device. In this ‘update’ mode the device will only receive packages, and the USB will be sandboxed from any other part of the device. Afterwards the secure firmware will check the new package for its genuineness, display a warning if it’s not, and otherwise boot back in normal operating mode with USB transfers fully disabled again. We are not any less secure than other solutions that allow updates through SD cards, but we do have a higher security certification than them (EAL7), and USB is less cumbersome.

@@NGRAVE I see. I really like the idea of your product and I'm sure the software update is secure, but there is definitely some confusing/misleading marketing language happening on your end. For instance on your fundraising page: "The NGRAVE ZERO is a fully offline device, providing the most extreme form of protection against online hackers. As the ZERO never needs to connect over USB, Bluetooth, NFC, Wifi, 4G or any other network connection, hackers simply cannot even attempt to steal your crypto."

@@mattcaps For any kind of regular use of the device, you do not need a connection, ever. So for creating your keys and wallets, syncing accounts, signing transactions, you name it, you do not need anything. If you want to upgrade your device, that is something else. You do not need to upgrade your device, but likely you will want to. To make sure that this is not an attack vector for hackers, we decided to also go to the extreme here. We certified the secure OS that handles a.o. firmware updates for EAL7, the highest security certification in the world. Other wallets maybe receive an EAL5+ or in extreme cases an EAL6 on their secure element (one component) level. We have it for the full overarching OS. That is how serious we take your security. Also, the USB is sandboxed and only available in that special boot mode for firmware updates.

@@aaronb1188 Hi Stevo and Aaron, absolutely. The Perfect Key follows the exact same logic as any other hardware wallet. It just uses the interchangeable format of 64 HEX - 24 words - 256 bit. You can by the way also create a 24 word mnemonic seed if that is what you prefer, although you'll soon notice that the 64HEX Perfect Key comes with many advantages, especially on the security side. First of all, we believe strongly in the benefits of open source. But we also have to consider its limitations. The security principle of having many eyes checking our code only holds if there are many people looking at our code and reporting issues. Unless we have a large and active user base, there is a significant risk that zero day vulnerabilities do not get disclosed. For this reason, we decided to gradually open source our device. To understand our reasoning, you have to understand the overall security design of our inner working: There is a non-secure firmware taking care of peripherals such as the touch screen, and the secure firmware authenticating the non-secure OS and providing the operations for all security related operations (secure storage, signing, key creation with TRNG etc). We have tried to find the best solution for the secure firmware, and we decide to partner with the only player in the worlds offering EAL7 certified firmware. This means it is the most extensively tested firmware ever and it is impossible even for us to tamper with part of our device. Furthermore, we also use a secure element for storage of the most sensitive data, which we also are not a freedom to open source. Our secure firmware gives us the option to replace functions ourselves with applets running within that secure OS. Once we release, we plan on gradually rewriting all parts currently covered by the proprietary OS ourselves and open source those applets one by one. Also keep in mind that the operational nature of our device is such that all sensitive communication happens over open (unencrypted) QR codes anyway, which are easy to verify by their nature. Since the key creation is done in combination by EAL7 verified secure firmware and parts of the non-secure OS that we will open source, and that transaction happen over QR code, we believe we combine the best of both worlds. Finally, we will also release the code of our mobile app at launch, which will contain all details about how we use the QR codes. This way, it is easy for anyone to understand how we use them and to re-use our logic there for any integration on another wallet or web service that they want.

So far, your completely airgapped, tamper proof solution and two part metal backup keys look super strong to me, the “not 100% opensource” part looked like the only downside to me. But it seems like you did give that a lot of consideration and this does sound safer - at least until you have build a bigger community of people who will report possible attack vectors. I’ll be honest and admit I have never heard about EAL7 certification. I’ll look into that. Where can I learn more about that standard?

You will always receive a paper wallet with the box (both ZERO only, and in the combo box as well). This paper is protected against shredding and water spills, so a neat upgrade compared to incumbent's paper wallets. In essence, you initiate a transaction in the app and define the parameters: from address, to address, amount, gas fee. You then convert this transaction request into a QR code that you can scan with your ZERO (which has a camera). On your ZERO, you can first verify the transaction request (are all parameters still the same), then sign the transaction, and the device will then generate a QR code of the signature. Your app can scan this code, and send the signature to the blockchain. The latter will only accept validly signed transactions. Moreover, the QR codes never contain any data on the private keys. So you are totally safe.

If you loose your ZERO (hardware wallet), and have made a backup, you will be able to import your master key into your ZERO and this will recover all your accounts. Your backup is the most important part. This holds all your keys to your crypto. Therefore we introduced the GRAPHENE, which is a stainless steel cryptographic puzzle consisting of two parts (7:06)

However, the battery is an ultra-efficient power resource and it can be charged by using the ZERO's USB port for wall charging. This is neat. I love the attention to detail. I think I'd still be reluctant to use the metal plates for backup though as the security of the backup depends entirely on keeping the two plates apart, and they don't seem like the easiest things to hide! I'm thinking this could be improved by splitting the upper plate into eight sections. Number them from 1-8, then I can arrange them myself (I just need to remember the order)

That way it would be difficult to determine the key if the bottom graphene plate was found with the associated NGrave device. At this stage, I assume you could simply purchase the default top key plate and work out the secret key IF you had the device and graphene bottom plate.

Hi Patrick, the device will gradually be open sourced except for the secure element part. Those chips are by design closed source, and get some sort of government certification. However, we don't rely fully on those chips while creating your keys, as in the past it has been proven that some governments implemented backdoors. This is why we use entropy of those chips that are best in class, but to cancel potential backdoors we include hashing of your fingerprint data, light input, and you will also be able to manually alter parts of the key. So that in the end you are certain that you are the only one to know the key. Not even we at NGRAVE can know what you created. That's very important. Beyond that, we also make sure that everything is verifiable by the user, so that you don't have to trust us, unlike with USB or BLE based wallets where eg signing is a black box. In the case of ZERO, you can scan any QR code with your phone to see what is inside, so everything is fully verifiable. Going forward, we will also open source more and more. Hope that helps!

Could you elaborate on that? In my understanding, if you generate your own phrase, there is no way they know it. With 50 dice rolls you achieve 128 bits encryption and with 101 rolls, 256bit. The more the better :) And it is a mathematicly proven method + no chips involved too. Plus if the company goes out of business, you can use simple AAA batteries to power up the wallet. I think it is rather cool, don't you agree?

@@ivank5077 Fundamentally, it is important to realize that 100% relying on the internal chip, or 100% relying on dice rolls might have issues. The former has been proven to be vulnerable to backdoors (a quick google search can show you this), the latter depends e.g. already on the quality of the dices you are using. What ZERO does is it takes at least 128 bit entropy from the internal chip, then adds external entropy from biometrics and ambient light, and then it engages in a unique interaction process with the end user. Regardlesss, a dice roll process is definitely not a bad way to create your key. Also, it's not the key generation process that makes it the coldest wallet, it's the fact that ZERO is offline, and EAL7 certified (the highest security certification and unrivaled in the industry), and extreme tamper-proofed, and more. Conclusion: we're happy to see you take your security seriously and hope that with whichever wallet you work, that you keep your crypto safe!

Hi Matthew, 1. stealing someone else's board: it is impossible to use any one else's board as: each upper plate is unique in configuration. You use the upper plate as an overlay to punch holes in the plain bottom plate. Only with these exact two plates, you can read off the key. If you use it with any other plate (eg of someone else) you wont find out any information on their key. 2. what if you punch a wrong hole; you can punch up again and you'll see it's not the correct hole (we'll make a 1min tutorial about it, but if you have the plates, you'll see it's super simple.

4. If you crack the screen, you'll have to get a new ZERO. There is no way around that. It's a security device, not a phone where you can switch every thing. If you can do that, you can hack the device. So it would defeat the purpose. Nevertheless, with your backup, you can always get a new device or even a competing one, and enter your recovery code and all your crypto will be restored. 5. The device is water and dust resistant. That said, if you make a hole in it and put it in a bath tub, then it is broken, just like any other wallet.

6. You are totally right. It should be easy to use. So that is exactly what we focused on. We built this device with a great number of end users, continuously trying to make it easier. Hi Mimir, part of our technology is currently closed source. This is the case for most hardware wallets (eg. the secure element chip is per definition always closed source today). However, and this is the great part, with NGRAVE, your security is very intuitive. For example, when you create your seed in the very first step, you will make it together with the device, and truly make it your own, so that you intuitively understand that NGRAVE nor anyone else can possibly know your key. The same goes for signing transactions: we use verifiable QR-codes that you can scan with any device to see if we hide code in there, so you have a white box versus USB and Bluetooth, where you don't really know what you are signing. Hope that helps! In the meantime, we are working on a roadmap to go towards open source as much as possible.

Hi, fingerprint or any other biometric technology isn't good on its own. You need to combine it with e.g. a strong PIN code to really enhance overall security in a two factor authentication setup. Therefore, on the ZERO, you can for example not configure the device to ONLY accept biometrics. You can either use the PIN-code only, or you have to do PIN+Fingerprint. You are totally right that any fingerprint technology will never be good enough. There is a serious margin of error on any sensor, even the best. That is also why e.g. an iPhone asks you for your PIN after a few wrongful fingerprint attempts. Because, if you could tap say 100 times, anyone would basically be able to access your device. Hi Kameron, the key that is generated is a hexadecimal key, meaning the character values range from 0-9 and A-F. In total, there are 16 different possible values a character can have, hence "hexadecimal", which means 16. As there are 64 values, this brings the total number of possible keys to 2^256 power, the same as the 24 word mnemonic phrase combinations (if you are unfamiliar with the latter, best to google it and all will become clear). I hope this helps answer your question though!
