With the historic Winter Classic game coming up on New Year’s Day, Former NHL star and trailblazer PK Subban joins The Pivot for a conversation you don’t want to miss.
Over his thirteen year NHL career, The Canadian native forged himself as more than a hockey player, creating his own lane on the ice and leaving his imprint on culture and change.
Ryan, Channing and Fred ask PK how a black kid growing up found a love for hockey and how he overcame racial barriers in a primarily white dominated sport to become one of the faces of the NHL and a global star. PK credits his parents for keeping him grounded and focused on his passion, tuning out the negative comments and the naysayers throughout his career to propel to stardom.
PK shares his personal experiences with racism in the sport from fans, teammates and others around the league and also how picking and choosing the moments to stand up to it and speaking out against even what his brother went through in the sport as well.
Winning the Norris Trophy, playing in Stanley Cup finals, the 3x All Star’s successful career on ice paved the way for his future entertainment, philanthropy and entrepreneurial world, becoming a leader in the minority ownership space with sports franchises.
Channing doesn’t miss the opportunity to ask PK about dating celebrities and his former engagement to Lindsey Vonn with the infamous story that she proposed to him and the real story behind their relationship.
After retiring at the young age of 33, PK shares why he felt it was the right time to hang up his skates and what his future looks like starting with a career in broadcasting.

He is the reason I fell in love with hockey. 2014 playoffs were one of his top 3 performances of his career. Especially the Eastern Semis vs the Bruins. Everytime he stepped on the ice when he was with MTL something was going to happen. He was THAT guy on the back end. He was THE PLAYMAKER on the team that needed one very badly given how mediocre MTLs offence was throughout his time there. After he was traded he joined a team which was already stacked on defensemen. He couldn’t be THAT guy anymore but he still produced well in NSH for his first 2 years. Especially 2018. It truly hurts that his career was so restrained by the idiotic head coach and GM of MTL at the time who wouldn’t let him be himself or play like he could. Nowadays defensemen are given so much freedom and support to do whatever they want. Subban was always restricted with what he could do on the ice. He always kept it professional and still gave it his all. Sadly the injuries just slowed him down dramatically after 2019. Had he been allowed to be himself in MTL and played with no restrictions and under a team with that modern freedom mindset for defencemen he would’ve prospered into something greater no doubt. Not saying it isn’t already great though. Subban was such an amazing player and his years from 2012-18 were his peak. So thankful for he’s done and the impact he left on me. He was by far my favourite player growing up.

I so enjoyed this interview. As a black kid playing hockey on the south side of Chicago in 1968 with dreams then of playing in the NHL yet having no idea of the challenge. I excelled even though I didn't play organized until 1975. The only reason I went or wanted to go to college was to play D1. I just wasn't good enough due to not getting the training and opportunity, yet Hockey changed my life.

I was born in 1988 myself and started playing ice hockey in 7th Grade. Having parents that immigrated to America was one of the best things that could've happened to me. I’m from Montreal and I’m the same generation as PK, I followed closely his career and what I could say is this. 1. The French media weren’t ready for him and until today we have Norman Flynn in the radio giving his racist thoughts on PK 2. The organization wanted him to act white. He’s not from that cloth and it bothered them. 3. He’s the city guy that I am and people that look like me aren’t often respected. We have world boxing Champions from the same complexion (Adonis Stevenson, Jean Pascal, Otis Grant) and they’re victims of the same things. 4. The biggest issue with PK and the organization including the media was that he signed the biggest contract in the history of the franchise and they couldn’t accept that even for a day. And PK refused to be a victim and they hate that. Now this city has an NBA player (Luguentz Dort) for its best payed athlete and they’re hating on it.

Great interview guys. When PK got traded away from Montréal, I literally stopped caring about the Habs, a team I grew up loving. That interview confirms what I was seeing from the outside. PK never seemed to get credit for his performance, it was always about trying to change him. What he brought was never valued and it’s a damn shame. Great interview of PK. Ask a question and he flys with the conversation with confidence and knowledge. Sad and enraged that we still deal with racism and placism! Many, many parallels, even though different sports, between PK and Cam Newton. 👏 to PK quitting before major injuries. Congratulations for having great parents centering you for life. Hockey parents are really a different breed for focusing kids. Keep up all the philanthropic causes for your self-fulfillment man! 💪

I LOVE PK❤ So happy y’all had him on. He got so much hate for having a personality in a league where most players are monotone and dry. And having a personality and being good as well? And all the celebs know who he is!? They were big mad, LOL! And some still are! I cannot wait until he tells everything about the trade from Montreal. I’m pretty sure most of us who follow the Habs know the real reason he was traded, but I just want him to confirm it.

6 minutes in to this video I’m already smiling and happy that I clicked the link to check it out. I’ve never heard of PK Subban up until this day. My whole family is Jamaican. I have family In Sudbury as well and my little cousin Jason is President of his son Massa’s hockey league and Massa Innis is a very talented hockey player. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

Man, PK had so much influence in the NHL community on and off the ice, he brought "swagger" to the game like its never been done before. The league is STILL STUCK TO ITS OLD WAYS, you gotta be a quiet leader. his brand eventually became bigger than the team which the organization wasn't too happy about that so they tried to flip the script on his image saying he's too loud, no one likes him in the locker room, that he wants all the attention etc which wasn't true because he was just being himself but at the end of the day PK PLAYED HIS HEART OUT EACH AND EVERY NIGHT HE STEPS HIS FOOT ON THE ICE, HE UNDERSTOOD THE MEANING OF PLAYING FOR AN PRESTIGE ORGANIZATION SUCH AS THE MONTREAL CANADIENS. THE NHL IS MISSING PLAYERS LIKE PK, THAT'S WHY ITS NOT EVEN A TOP 5 MOST WATCHED SPORTS. IT'S REALLY UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING LIKE PLAYOFF HOCKEY IN THE SPRING 🔥

This was a great interview to watch. The day Pk was traded from Montreal was the day I started not giving a crap about my team or the game. If a player of his caliber and heart could have that happen to him I didn't want to waste my time on a team that didn't consider loyalty and true talent a value. Watched the tribute last night and cried like a baby.
