Yep, and well deserved. As a huge Rangers fan, I never liked Messier. I appreciate what he did helping to bring the cup to NY, but what a pompous douche. Even now, he's done nothing post playing career in coaching or personnel, but the guy thinks he deserves a shot at being the head coach or GM of the Rangers. In a world of teams giving an "A" to 4 or 5 players a season and not naming a captain for years at a time, I kinda respect that the Ducks just treated the "C" as captain for on-ice purposes. Scott was injured so passed it off and then returned it once fully healthy and ready to go

I think the 1995-96 St Louis Blues merit an inclusion. They stripped Brett Hull of the C at the beginning of the season and gave it to Shayne Corson. Then they trade for Gretzky at the deadline and make him captain for the final 18 games of the season. An absolute trainwreck of leadership

You missed a chance to talk about when it happened twice on the same team in the same season, again involving Mike Keenan. Coaching the St. Louis Blues in 1995-96, "Iron" Mike stripped superstar and Blues icon Brett Hull of the 'C' and gave it to Shayne Corson instead. Later that year, the Blues traded for All-time superstar Wayne Gretzky and Corson gave up the 'C' to him. Unfortunately. due to Keenan and the Blues playing hardball in contract talks the following Summer, the Great One departed for New York the next season. Keenan sure had a way of breaking up team leadership, didn't he?

This is probably your most important video yet. Leadership is greatly under appreciated by the fan base, despite being a main focus of any decent management team. Growing up in BC our teachers in school always put Linden at the peek of leadership, the bar all leaders were measured by… then Messier comes in… yeah, you said it all perfectly. I have loads of respect for him but after what he did to my beloved team it proved that the best intentions can turn into a ‘mess’

My brother played in Medicine Hat the year after Rob Niedermayer left. He lived with the same billets Niedermayer lived with. That is not why I am posting. When I was at camp with my brother, I went to a Pancake House and there met Trevor Linden's father. He saw my mom's Tigers sweater and introduced himself. He casually said his son Jamie had recently played for Medicine Hat and that his older son also did and was (at that time) the captain of the Vancouver Canucks. That has forever stuck with me,

It wasn't injuries with Niedermayer, it was because he (and Teemu Selanne - who was a free agent) decided not to play at the start of the 07-08 season. Both Scott and Teemu couldn't decide if they wanted to retire, and because Scott was still under contract, he was formally suspended when he didn't report to training camp. He didn't officially return until that December (and Teemu back in February). So in Anaheim's position, I wouldn't blame them for having Pronger take the C that season.
@RobTalksHockey
@RobTalksHockey 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and I should've done a better job explaining the entire situation. But you also left out the context that Scott was recruited specifically to lead and captain the Ducks when they were a non playoff team. He single handedly elevated them to cup finish within 3 years, and was stripped within months of winning because he was contemplating retirement. Not to mention that only 2 years later Scott would captain the Vancouver 2010 team, that was made up of only captains and the best leaders in the league. It was more so the disrespect to even think about removing him as captain. If Tavares debated retirement next year, would they instantly remove it within months? Absolutely not, and especially not back in 2007.
@dstcoyote22rants
@dstcoyote22rants 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobTalksHockey yes, he was brought in to lead, but he wasn’t just contemplating retirement, he was not showing up! Being stripped of captaincy because you’re suspended and not playing is a good reason for management to say “okay, we gotta move on as best we can from this situation he and Teemu created.” Perhaps when he did come back he decided to not to take the C back out of respect for Pronger, or maybe Carlyle was sending him a message, but yes, we can both agree, Pronger was no Niedermayer. The dude was fun to watch, as was that entire 06-07 team - I was actually there when they won the Cup.

Yeah, as a Canucks fan growing up, I remember the Mess that Messier made. My dad never liked him, even in his Oilers days. Always said he was a dirty player. Then he comes in and guts the Canucks? He is not liked in the West household.

while it didnt work out... of course you give the C to messier. Also, Linden didnt produce much, and with a new leader his value was all but gone, and the Canucks acquire 3 VERY good players in return. Its actually one of the best value trades i've ever seen. This single trade blessed the future of the canucks for 20 years despite the messier experiment going poorly.

Although goalie is the most important position in hockey I also think that since they are defending the goal 100% of the time, they see the game from a completely different angle than the attackers. Which is why I think a captain should be an attacker, because he is able to talk with his team at all times, and see the game the same way.

You're absolutely wrong to say Weber is worse than Subban. Subban LOOKED better for one season after the trade, and that is it. Every year since, no fan, scout, player, coach or GM in the league would take PK over Weber.

Number 11 was unofficially retired by the team, so they allowed the POS to take it, over the objections of the family of the player who wore it, Wayne Maki, who died of a brain tumor. Ownership was also crap in those days, having taken over from the Griffiths family.

Being the best player, does not automatically mean they are leaders. (Before the rebuild ) I talk to training staff in the Canucks locker room, who claimed that after linden as captain, communication broke down from the top players down. That's what I've been told. Take it or leave it. After captain linden, Vancouver had terrible leaders who didn't communicate with the confidence that captains need

the notion that weber was statistically worse than subban at the time of the trade is blatantly and objectively false, in a one for one weber even as the older player had more trade value. goals and assists are cool but theyre defensemen and weber is twice as good as subban defensively, no amount of points will offset that
