The team that is behind usually pulls the goalie in the last couple of minutes so they can have an extra player on offense , making it a 6 on 5, and effectively making the defending team shorthanded.

Here is my take on the Greig/Rielly debate. Greig did not have to slapshot the empty net. But he could, no rule against it. Rielly could not do that. Rule against it. Usually a goalie is only pulled from their teams net if they’re down a goal or 2, in exchange for getting a 6th attacker, in the desperate hopes they might be able to tie or win the game with an extra attacker on the ice.

It's a little known rule, but the goalie is required to pick up the drycleaning for the team when the drycleaner calls. Sometimes that happens during game time. It's unfortunate if that happens to your team, but you can't argue with tradition.

when teams get desperate for more scoring chances in the third period, they'll sometimes take out their goalies in exchange for putting an extra man on the ice. this is usually a last resort, and you have to have really solid defense in order to find even a little bit of success this way. as for your second question, many players are emotionally immature lmao
