Several years ago, the NHL wanted to get more scoring. Stricter infractions were enforced, no more hooking, holding, etc, which seemingly improved scoring. Combined with faster skating players, faster shots, and several other things. From a spectator point of view, more skills showcased...bravo. With the enforcement of infractions much stricter, the league has created many more special teams situations. Statistically, there are teams in your league with 40% of their goals being scored via power play situations. While this has created more goals being generated, it is changing the face of the core of teams. Teams are now being built specifically around out numbered situations. It once seemed that the team with the best goalie won, now it's evolving to the team with the best power play wins. In a game that once had a league champion nicknamed ‘The Broadstreet Bullies”, obviously it has changed dramatically. The stricter enforcement of infractions has also created a new dilemma: player uncertainty and inconsistent officiating. Because of these evolving rules, players seem uncertain what exactly is an enforceable infraction, which has the officials calling or not calling infractions determining the outcomes of games. Is this what the NHL and their board of governors is attempting to create or is it just the evolution of a sport that is increasingly getting faster and more skilled? WIth the current speed of the game, is it truly possible to skate backwards as fast as someone skating forward without having any other options at slowing them down without taking a penalty? With the older rules that were not as strict, an attacking player could expect to get hooked, held, slashed, or actually hammered with a bodycheck which, while play a bit slower, was likely a deterrent to just charging straight up the center of the ice and having the other team commit an infraction that could lead to a goal more than 30% of the time. With these rules constantly evolving, players seem uncertain which minor contact will result in a penalty, and with penalties being at the digression of the referees, it creates a playing environment where only the fastest players have the greatest effect on their teams. Penalties calls have way too much gray area allowing for way too much inconsistency from game to game. Since the introduction of replays being used for an off ice official to view under certain instances, maybe the league should consider an off ice team to review penalties or lack thereof to make the game more even for all teams. If a call is missed on ice, an off ice team could alert the arena officials, make there correct call, and reset times as is done when a goal is scored, called incorrectly by the on-ice officiating staff, and subsequently corrected. Instead of having groups of 2 officials in every game being relied upon to call the games consistently, have one person make/correct on ice calls. It is not as inviting of a sport when the officiating weighs a lot more in deciding the outcome of hockey games. Something needs to change…

The Kings get to have one more player then the Oilers out there so there's going to be a King left open, as a given, they have more players so the OIlers physically can't cover all players. It's why it's called a Powerplay. If you want to toss about blame, maybe try the OIler's joker who was in the sin bin and giving the Kings that extra guy.

Since McDavid can so easily and automatically hit those corners at the top of the net, I'd think maybe when the goalies see he's the guy with the puck they'd stay on their feet. As soon as they go down, the corners are open for an easy shot. This is a case where they might reverse the conventional wisdom and make him beat you down low, because with the goalie pads and all the other players' feet in the way, the bottom will still be fairly covered, and by standing up you might be able to take away the top corners. He still might score, and there's a good chance of a deflection, but you cover more of the net and it wouldn't be just giving him a free shot.

I for one scream that at the TV every game!! The most natural thing to happen to the puck is the blade getting under it as the stick blade moves forward.... giving it lift. We in Buffalo have a good young prospect in Devon Levi,but a only 6' tall when he goes down in goal he leaves soooo much room above, it needs attention to go forward for him. Stay up more often and make them beat you....

@@brianjones7660 The goalies are so drilled nowadays on the butterfly style and the idea of taking away the bottom of the net that they just do it automatically. That might have been good 10-15 years ago, but the best players nowadays are so good at picking the top corners that the style has to be modified. Patrick Kane also scored one of those goals yesterday and he & Crosby have made a career of it. You have to know who is shooting. An ordinary guy, yeah, go down and cover the bottom, but with McDavid, Crosby, Kane, Jack Hughes and guys like that, you're just giving them a free goal, and those guys are already so good you shouldn't be giving them anything for free. If McDavid doesn't have that free shot, OK, maybe he passes to someone else and that guy scores, but making him make that extra pass at least makes them work for it and you have a chance to stop the pass.

То, что вы для себя отметили в указанных командах и есть следствие того, что финансовый баланс оказалось возможным соблюсти. А в Эдмонтоне два пожирателя денег: МакДэвид и Дразайтл, - сократили место для маневра более чем ощутимо... МакДэвид в очень темную лошадку для возможных обменов превратился, если, правда, сам не пойдет на снижение зарплаты... какой-то движняк в Эдмонтоне по обновлению состава будет, я так понимаю, в сезоне 2024-2025... Man Oilers fans haven't gotten any better at handling losses since the WCF, always a ref to blame and not your team who hasn't learned to do the little things it takes to win tight checking playoff games. Danault, Doughty and Kopitar are serving up a masterclass on how to compete in a series even if you are out talented

You have to admit the game 1 OT penalty that directly led to that OT winner was a weak call. There was plenty of room for conjecture as to whether it was the Oiler who tripped up the King, or the King just tripped over the broken stick right there. I can't say anything about this OT OIler's penalty as I didn't see it, just the fact the Oilers were killing a penalty in overtime. If it was a legit penalty, it should be called, OT or not. I always say "let them play the game" means call the rules fairly, not ignore the rules and let them get away with murder. The rules define NHL hockey and thus "the game" so anything not within the NHL rules, is not "letting them play the game".

2 goals on 40 shots really says so much. Especially from a team that didnt have any problems scoring during the regular season. Edmonton is always their own worst enemy when it comes to playoff hockey. Hate to say it but they'll be out in 6.

Oils fans can't blame refs 100% for losing. If oils didn't take dumb penalties in game 1 and game 3, oils would be up 3-0. Plus Nurse doesn't play defense, it's always like 5 on 4 when Nurse is on the ice :)

Really?....How was allowing an obvious high stick goal in OT tonight the Oilers taking dumb penalties....when 2 games ago they gladly called back a high stick goal on Edmonton in OT?...How is an obvious knee on knee from Doughty not called going after Mcdavid. But Draisaitl's little slash getys called?...Kings were diving all over the ice and getting away with murder. The refs have been a disgrace. The league should be embarrassed. This has been disgusting to watch.

@@algrundau9441 Because there was NO question (100% conclusive video proof) about the one in Edmonton AND it was deflected directly by the high stick into the goal. There WAS question about game 3's high stick, and since you need to have 100% conclusive proof and there was no conclusive proof, the call on the ice has to stand.
