I'm just glad this one didn't burn the Kings for a change... We've had more obvious high sticks than that counted against us since instant replay started on twelve different occasions and two pucks going in off the netting which led to a review of that the season after... The most infamous one was in Phoenix when a Coyote had his stick well over Mike Cvik's head (which believe me is WAY above the glass) that went directly in behind Quick and those blind mothers in Toronto called it a GOOD goal... It wasn't until about three years ago that we started getting some calls going our way on top of keeping those bad ones mostly out of our net... Not enough for my taste...but some... This one was just a lucky bounce that went the Kings way...and it was declared a good goal on the ice AND in Toronto...so GOOD GOAL!!!

Im a detroit fan and i could care less who wins this series. Totally inconclusive. Thats why the goal was allowed. Im sitting here trying to see where it hit his stick, every angle. People keep saying look at the blade movement but that also is meaningless as long as a hand is gripping it at the other end. One angle it looks like it could have, another looks like not at all. Thats why the goal stood. I dont really see the controversy. Would i be mad if it was my team it went against? Sure, but id still understand why.

@@NerieI First of all, the side angle shows the puck maintaining its arc through the air. Also, replays are looked at in Toronto (a Canadian city), and must be 100% conclusive. NO ONE, including people who are not rooting or either team, can make up their minds on the video. That is about as clear as it gets that the video is NOT conclusive. The replay officials in Toronto saw the same angles we did and did not find 100% conclusive evidence to overturn the initial call on the ice. Therefore, BY the RULES of replay, the call had to be allowed to stand.

while the puck defintely shifted from the stick, making it high sticking, on the way down it bounces off the edmonton defender. According to NHL rules, puck possession is deemed as the last player to have made contact with the puck, even off of equipment, therefore the play would continue. While its a heavily gray area, that is how it is written in the rules. Just like you could argue that the kings player didnt really "play" the puck, it just hit his stick but there wasnt any intent to swat it down. Either way, good goal, but interesting conversation topic on the definition of rules.

The one angle directly behind ekholm, if you look at the stanchion , the puck’s trajectory is travelling away from the vertical post. It clearly touches the stick and then travels back the same direction slightly, and falls to the ice

On the Kings broadcast there is no good view of the high stick. On this feed, you can sort of see the rotation of the puck change. Looks like it could have been a high stick. However, the Kings broadcast had two views from the other side of the ice that both clearly show the puck roll down Ekholm's back, that touch wiped away the high stick contact.

Unless Ekholm had possession AND control of the puck, when the Kings player plays the puck following the high stick, the play should be whistled dead. "The play will not be stopped if, after the puck is high-sticked, a player of the non-offending team gains possession and control of the puck." "Where the puck is contacted with a high stick, deflects off an opposing player and is taken by a player of the offending team, play will be stopped. A deflection results in possession but not control of the puck."

That doesn't matter at all needs to be possession. Rule 60 - High-sticking. Batting the puck above the normal height of the shoulders with a stick is prohibited. When a puck is struck with a high stick and subsequently comes into the possession and control of a player from the offending team (including the player who made contact with the puck), either directly or deflected off any player or official, there shall be a whistle. To be fair I thought the same as you at first too lol

Not playing 4 on 5 in the defensive zone. Edmonton always have 1 player high near the blue line, even if the puck is below the goal line. Question the "fast break" mentality they live or die by.😢

Refs didn’t have a standard this game. Soft penalties against oilers. I think it’s okay to penalties but same standard for both. TBH KORPi is just amazing, he is the reason for LA being 2-1. Also, oilers taking penalties but oilers are getting chances, just not going in.

@Buried Unkind Yes I can 100%. As said at 2:05 the Puck without question should have come down in an Arc because of the Momentum it had. But it suddenly loses that momentum when it is up there. I wonder why... oh certainly not the Stick that is right up there in the way of the Arc! 🤯

I expect better from Canadian hockey fans - should know the rules. Yes, the puck hit the stick. Then what? it drops on the back of an Oiler. Therefore, no high stick. You're right - that is an easy call.

Replay the video at 0.25x speed, the puck hits the skate, goes upwards and hits his stick and puck immediately stops, his blade actually turns backwards from the weight of the puck hitting it. If the puck doesn't touch his blade of the stick, then the puck would keep going upwards without stopping. Pretty easy call to make from the video review room in Toronto. Oilers got screwed big time.

You are assuming most people here have passed grade 10. They react emotionally not rationally and unfortunately that is the normal these days. As for the league review I think that just comes down to the tv show and how they can make it more controversial and exciting.

The puck was coming to its peak regardless of whether it hitting or not hitting anything. So that reasoning doesn't work. The angle that you see where his stick seems to move back a bit as it "touches" it looks sketchy but when you look from other angles watching just that you see him pulling his stick away from the puck. Saying "It's an easy call to make" is ridiculous. There is no definitive it 100% hit the stick, I mean it probably just barely hit it but probably isn't conclusive and that's what you need to overturn a goal. Goal was handled as it should be for any team in the NHL.
