I was against Lalonde being hired from the minute they were talking about it. The Wings need a coach who is experienced, not a rookie NHL head coach. The Wings play horrible defensive positioning in their own end and a good coach could fix that. A weak coach can't. The Wings are puck watching in their own end instead of covering their man in the slot.

It was pretty obvious in the offseason. Yzerplan has been about signing mid players to 5M deals and now when their only decent center is out they are expected to play guys like Compher as 1C? They needed an actual 2C, or 1C and bump Larkin down.

Larkin being out exposes the crystal clear picture of our lack of a legitimate 1C. Larkin is a 2C. When the only top six center man you have is out, you have no chance. When a top 6 center is out, usually the other carries the workload. Compher is the closest and he’s a borderline 3C. The Wings have had the worst draft lottery luck of all 32 teams the past 6 years. That’s a fact. So Yzerman has done the best he can in building a well rounded team. It worked until Larkin was out. This is not on Stevie.

Had Detroit been afforded the opportunity to draft Tim Stutzle 3rd overall in 2020 this rebuild would be different ascent. Instead the worst team by far that year lost the lottery all together and ended up drafting 4th overall. Raymond is great but he is no Tim Stutzle. Detroit's drafting outcome has been influenced by NHL because it has been slotted down this team 6 or more draft positions over the years..

It is still on Stevie if he knows the roster isn’t good enough as built, then makes no effort to solve the problem. Five years in and the team has no clear direction, with no lottery or playoff chances. The prospect pool doesn’t project to fix the core problems either. Complementary pieces like Berggren have already shown they’re not NHL ready now, much less a top line player in the long term.

SY drafting those defenders in the second round in the 2024 draft hints at him building from the blueline out since he has no chance at the elite forwards taken earlier. SY may be drafting another defender in the 2024 first round again if it is BPA.

Some of us were, actually. All season, this team has been riding an unsustainable shooting % and we called that out. As of today 2nd highest shooting percentage, 6th fewest shots for per 60, and 5th most shots against per 60. None of that reflects a cogent system or sustainable depth talent. Lalonde’s only lightly culpable, though, as this is Steve’s team. This is what he’s built.

This is a horrible skid but people need to stop pretending like this team needs a complete rebuild. They’ve had a great season with only 1 fairly bad stretch in December and now this horrible 7 game skid. This is not a bad team, calling them bad after the season they’ve had is like calling the oilers bad because they had 2 horrible months to start the season. Making the playoffs would be great, but honestly guys it’s just not that important this year, They aren’t ready to bring a cup home yet! They are close and they have proved this season that within the next year or 2 they will have a cup contending team. Fair weather fans aren’t in it for the long haul, look at the big picture and be proud of a great season for a rebuilding wings and being a step closer to having our contender team back.

This roster was punching above its weight for two straight months and it’s finally caught up. This team is what it is, with nothing coming down the line. Not one top fifteen player on the roster. Not one top ten prospect in the pipeline. The doom and gloom is well-informed. The team is something worse than awful, it is mediocre.

@@workshoptelescope lol you’ll be alright my guy. Since this team has started it’s rebuild the record has gotten better every year. There’s no excuses for the way they are playing right now, but if you don’t think skids like this happen to decent/good teams your just wrong. This is hockey, I don’t look at small 10 game sample sizes like the the highlight reel fans. I look at the whole season, and when I look at the whole season it has been a vast improvement on the last 8 years. As far as prospects, we have the 2nd best prospect pool in the entire nhl right now.

@@shrimpanzee8510 they need big time changes defensively and in goaltending next season, but even with their struggles they’ve held a highly positive goal differential all season. Consistently held a top 10 offense the entire season until this 7 game skid. I’m not trying to defend the wings and say they are contenders, I’m just saying a lot of you cry babies aren’t looking at the season as a whole which was by far detroits best season of hockey in a decade.
