I can speak from experience that the Sabres fanbase was pretty split on Eichel, a lot of the older fans thought he was a quitter and didn’t like his perceived attitude, while most younger fans thought the owners and management should be blamed for the team’s lack of success while he was here. Clearly more of the former were in the building for his return, but the rest of the fanbase turned against Eichel when he indicated that the fans never showed up while he was a Sabre (which is complete false). More stories came out about him being an asshole when he was out and about in the community, meanwhile Tuch was a childhood fan who embodied what the franchise wanted in a player who “wants to be a Buffalo Sabre”. And we now know that night turned the franchise around and the team went on a hot streak to end the year

He never seemed like he was interesting in being a true leader and doing what was necessary to get his team to improve. Also, his reaction and taking shots at the fans for booing him is ridiculous. Maybe the fans would have been louder while you were on the team if you actually won games for them. Don’t get mad at the fans for booing you when you wanted to leave. Sabres fan here- I was on Jack's side regarding the surgery and I understood why he wanted out. He lost me with that cheap shot towards the fans though. Ya Jack, there was little to cheer about with you as the leader, that's not the own you think it is. Now I kinda think he just isn't built to be "the guy"- he doesn't take criticism well, doesn't seem to be the best communicator, just gets frustrated and sulks, and it's never his fault. I think we saw like a 20 game stretch where he just put his head down and dominated games, but that wasn't enough with Buffalo's roster. Instead of working with the young guys and being patient he wanted out. I can't blame him for that, but he then alienated everyone when he tried to take a shot at the fans- bro, you asked for a trade, what did you expect? Whatever, him and the cutthroat declining Knights are a perfect match.
@jehl19632 жыл бұрын
Sometimes people think that because a person is a great athlete/pilot/salesperson/(fill in a profession), that they will be a great leader of that profession. That is just not the case. Being a leader requires a different skill set than being just really good at your role, and some people are not cut out for it. Many of the best sports leaders were only so-so players, while many outstanding performers are just not equipped to be a leader. I would put Jack into the later category.

@Steve_Hunts96 Жыл бұрын
Fast forward a year later, and Jack Eichel has become currently the leading point-scorer for a playoff-bound VGK team, and a Sabres team with count them 5… YES, 5 PLAYERS, that are over 60pts on the season, including a guy with over 44 goals AND assists (90+ points), is in serious danger of missing the playoffs for the 12th-straight season… and most likely they WILL miss! Sabres fans, I have no pity for you or your team’s likely shortcoming this season. You people are abject losers for the way you treated Eichel, for the way your franchise treated him when he was simply trying to TAKE CARE OF HIS OWN BODY, and it’s such a breath of fresh air to know that he’s doing so much better in a new, MUCH better home. Sure, this season, even if it’s a missed playoff year, will still be your best season in over a DECADE, but does that really mean anything? Missing the playoffs is still missing the playoffs no matter how you spin it, and to miss the playoffs while having all that scoring is a crime for the NHL, especially since it FOR SURE will not be guaranteed to be repeated, or for that matter improved on, beyond this season. When you’re that good offensively, you should be where Jack Eichel is right now; firmly entrenched in the playoff picture for a conference. But nope, this is Buffalo after all, and losing + false hope runs in their DNA, both in hockey, and unfortunately in football as well (unfortunately because I would love for the Bills to succeed). Who knows, maybe far down the road this will be a good trade for the Sabres, but as of this moment, in a year where the Sabres were EXPECTED to finally end the playoff drought, they’re in very serious danger of missing the playoffs yet again, whereas Jack Eichel is loving life in Vegas, and is getting ready to chase the cup for the 1st time in his career… I really hope Eichel can win it with Vegas too, because what a PERFECT dose of karma that would be to all these Sabres fans that have talked all that shit about him since the trade! Nothing would matter anymore after such a thing!

I would argue that the neck surgery requested by Eichel (artificial disk replacement) didn't have extreme risks. It was unprecedented in the NHL, which seemed to be the biggest issue. I think Ryan Kessler in Vancouver is another example. He was a fan favorite for the longest time. And then in the 2010 Olympics fans experienced rooting against him, and it all started to go downhill. Around the same time his sexual antics off the ice were becoming common knowledge and kind of a meme, and a lot of fans just turned on him. I think it was pretty unfair of us fans but there was no going back. When he asked for a trade implying the canucks were trash it sealed the deal. I don't think anyone burned their jerseys, but those jerseys went from one of the most popular in the city to completely non-existent and he got boo'ed a lot when playing in Vancouver after the trade. It should be noted though that when he was here for Daniel & Henrik Sedin's retirement people cheered him.
