One of my favorite retro soundbites is from the 1995 draft. The Dallas Stars had the 11th overall pick. They wanted a power forward and were hoping to draft Terry Ryan, but he was already taken 8th overall by Montreal. So Dallas had to settle for Jarome Iginla

“Comparing someone who has yet to play a game in the NHL to one of the greatest of all time is extremely risky” When they make comparisons to previous or current great players, it’s not to say they’re comparable in success; it’s to say they’re comparable in play style. When I play hockey, I play with a big slap shot and take one timers. I could compare my play to Alex Ovechkin but I’m not even fucking close to his left but. It’s a point of relative skill traits, that is to say relative to the level they play against already, not to say they’re going to have the same success.

As a Panthers' fan, during that season leading up to the 2013 draft a lot of us were zoning in on Nathan MacKinnon. It became more and more of a focus as we got later in the season and we were really bad. From the outside, people might not know that until that point Florida had never really had a #1 franchise center. And we saw this as our chance, maybe even fate, that we were going to come out of that draft with a #1 center. Especially considering whenever in the past we had picked that high we took a defenseman. So, when we lost the lottery, it was kind of up in the air who we would pick. But I was pretty confident that we were still trying to get a center, I just didn't know how we would do it. But then they picked Barkov, and I was like, okay maybe this kid could be it. Most people didn't know much about Barkov coming into the draft. And I was no different, but I wasn't all doom and gloom like a lot of people were that were looking in from the outside. Because like I said, they didn't know anything about our situation (we had plenty of young defensemen). And they certainly didn't know about the lack of a franchise center in our history. I'm so glad it worked out. One thing that a lot of people certainly didn't know was Barkov's skill level. If you're going to make such conclusive judgements, I think you should at least know the player's skill set. I think some people still don't know how skilled Barkov really is. I'm not saying he's shown his skill level as much as he should have (really, this has been one of my biggest problems with Barkov). But he's got some skill that few players can match or have better than.

I remember people talking about Seth Jones potentially being drafted first overall instead of Nathan MacKinnon in 2013, as if they were comparable talents or something… in reality, the only reason those conversations were happening was because Colorado had that pick, and since Popeye Jones (Seth Jones’ dad) used to play for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA, it would have been a nice story about father and son playing pro sports in the same city. Thankfully for them, the Avalanche could not have cared less about the narrative and made the right choice with their pick. Also, if you really want to know how good Pavel Brendl was, just ask Brian Burke--he talks about him all the time.
@justinlast2lastharder7492 жыл бұрын
Part of it also was that the Avalanche DESPERATELY needed a Top Tier Offensive Defenseman and Seth Jones fit that bill...Tyson Barrie didn't have his Breakout Offensive Year until Jones's Rookie Year so in hindsight they really didn't need Jones, but consensus was that they needed him at the time.

Anyone who doesn't think Don Cherry is an absolute tool, we present these four tweets that illustrate not only a lack of hockey knowledge, but lack even internal consistency.

Two draft picks stick in the mind Patrik Stefan in 99 and Nail Yakupov in 12. Both are safe to say we're and busts.

How many times is Pierre McGuire going to embarrass himself before people stop hiring him as an analyst? In 2005 he went on a rant against Montreal for drafting Carey Price.

The prediction on Seider is not wrong at all. He was a boom or bust pick. That means he has and incredibly high ceiling or he could not even play in the nhl as his range. As opposed to predicting him to be a bottom pair player and he be Amazing.

Not exactly true. They said he had no offensive skill and would be a stretch to be a second line defensive pairing on draft day. Clearly both views weren’t even close.
