The league's handling of the Wideman incident was absolutely shameful, they screwed the linesman, Don Henderson. That hit ended Henderson's career and Wideman got only 10 games. Then, (somehow, because this is fishy as hell) Henderson's lawsuit was tossed out of court and he was ordered to pay $11,000 for the Flame's and Wideman's legal expenses. Look up this story, it's disgraceful for the NHL.

@@NODAK9 globalnews.ca/news/4173344/don-henderson-dennis-wideman-legal-costs/ Doesn't go into any detail at all, just reports the things I mentioned. In fact, most publication seemed pretty timid to cover this at all. Access journalism at its finest, gotta keep the league happy so you get invited into the locker room to interview players and such. Also, they reported 20 game suspension, but Wideman appealed and had it reduced to 10. Yeah, because 20 games was too harsh for permanently injuring an official. This one isn't bad: www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/dennis-wideman-suspension-appeal-decision-arbitrator-20-games-nhl-referee-don-henderson/ Notice how he says he "treated officials with the utmost respect" throughout his career, and then his texts to Gregory Cambell show him denigrating the refs. Also, the NHLPA wanted no discipline at all, wow. One last source: www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/22627442/arbitrator-nhl-handle-dispute-linesman-don-henderson-former-calgary-flame-dennis-wideman "In his statement of claim, Henderson says he suffered a concussion and injuries to his neck, back, shoulder and knee, with the neck injury requiring surgery. Henderson also claims he suffered shock, anxiety, depression, headaches and permanent and partial disability." and a judge ruled the NHL should handle this. What a joke.

@Xanlet Thanks for the info! Couldn’t agree more with you. I remember the subsequent bureaucracy bullshit thinking the league would do the right thing. Thor Nelson lives in the small town I’m currently in and we talked at length about this. Wideman did help financially after the fact which was never published for legal reasons. Still a shitty event nonetheless.

Really? Because from what I saw of the play and the facts. Wideman suffered a pretty bad concussion on that play, saw the linesman last second on his way to the bench and braced for impact. Have you ever had a concussion before? I have. Especially with serious concussions. Your motor skills and ability to assess a fast moving play going on around you are pretty much non existent. You're on autopilot trying to get off the field/Ice. I'm not saying what he did is ok or should be allowed. But I don't believe he intentionally smashed that ref from behind like that. He braced for impact way to late for it to have been intentional. If you watch the play he braces literally last second
@MikesDIY
@MikesDIY 4 жыл бұрын
@@keltongillanders5736 braced for impact? Did we both watch the same video? That wasn't a reaction. He lifted his hands up ahead of time and extended his arms when he got to the ref. A concussion might have made him do something he wouldn't have normally done, but that hit was intentional.

Wideman's "accidental" check on Don Henderson ended up ending his career; Henderson hasn't officiated a game since 2016, and actually wound up filing a lawsuit against Wideman and the Flames organization on the grounds that his injuries prevented him from being able to work. Neither Wideman nor the Flames ended up having to pay; in fact, Henderson had to pay *them* after the judge tossed his case.

It absolutely should be, whether player or ref, anyone involved in a incident like that should be held responsible. In the case of that last one, wasn't he later diagnosed with some serious brain injury? It's thought that the check was the result of basically not knowing where he was. I could be mistaken.

I always thought Hockey refs were the only refs every bit as tough as the players. Then when we started getting micd up videos, it was confirmed. The nhl refs literally make fun of the guys that fake like they want to fight.

Everyone is talking about Wideman but look at 5:35 before the NJ Devil player is clearly is frustrated the referee is in the way and even stares at him directly when when he "accidentally" wacks him in the face with his stick. I'd be pissed too if the home team Referees got in the way, i seen that shit happen alot of times and they try to act like its a accident. They aint like a stupid group of brainless seagulls not aware of where theyre positioned.
