I was watching that game live on TV, and immediately after the no goal call the camera switches to the one pointed at the officials box and a guy in a suit had his hand out, and in his hand was a headset and I knew at that moment the officials in Toronto were like "hold the fuck up, get his ass over to the booth so we can set him straight." Never had I felt such a great sense of satisfaction when I finally saw the NHL holding their officials accountable when they made a terrible call.

I would have thought the rule in that case was a do-over (at least it is at some of the other levels).

It's actually the rule in the college game, hence why I said other levels. They don't award the goal unless obvious and imminent (such as when the goalie's pulled, or you lay the stick in front of the net and the puck hits it), but there must be some sort of penalty to the goalie for doing it, so it becomes a do-over.

It's rare, but it is in the rule book, which is my source, and was cited during the 2010 shootout of RPI vs. USA (World Junior team; I at least know that's on KZbin; in both instances the puck went in anyway so it didn't matter). However, if it's obvious and imminent, college allows the ref to award the goal. I have seen credited goals on an empty net for that reason.

@@nuggetschicken1781 No, that isn't correct. The goalie has to be touching his crease at the very least for incidental contact to be deemed as goaltender interference. Marty was pretty much halfway out to the hash marks when incidental contact was made, which is why it was deemed no goal. Now intentional contact outside of the crease is a different story. You can't hit or trip up a goalie behind the net for example.

Maybe, but players still need to be in control of their sticks. Even if it was accidental, it should be a automatic goal. This is why as a goalie you put a boatload of tape on the knobs of your sticks, so you can catch the stick before you let it fly from your hands on a poke check.
