A long time ago, I was talking to a person who was working in a fairly senior position for the Sabres at the time and I talked to her about this. She told them to replay the goal constantly on the screen in the arena. When told that would get the club a fine from the NHL, she said "I don't give a sh*t! Keep playing it!" A pretty awesome person all round with some great stories.

As a matter of fact Adelphia cable contacted every team in the league, for the record I Delphia on the Buffalo Sabres at the time and no one had ever heard of such a rule Amendment it was just the lead trying to cover up a nasty embarrassing awkward situation

Its a BS make believe rule change. The league would have announced the rule change to the public to avoid having a Buffalo incident. Telling me they decide a secret rule change league wide but not one journalist knew about it yet they probably know every trade or rule change days ahead of time.

I didn't stay up to watch, but when I heard of the controversy, I went straight to the NHL website thinking they would have a good explanation. There was not a word about it. At first, they just pretended it never happened. That's why I don't buy this rule that had never been called the whole year and just showed up to dig the NHL out of a hole. No goal.

The toe in the crease rule was to prevent net charging and goaltender interference. Protecting goaltenders from injury. IMO this can be done simply by disallowing players from plowing the goaltender. So many breakaways happen where the incoming player takes out the goaltender and as a goalie myself I hate that the goals are allowed. If I get ran over, by the puck carrier, and don't make a save because of it, then it should be interference. Alternatively, if a player doesn't score after jamming the stick three times into the goaltender it should be a penalty. Jamming is how I have gotten so many injuries when playing; I think goaltenders need more rules to protect them from injuries.

I liked the skate in the crease rule, it allowed goalies the room they need to work. I think it was far less ambiguous than today's interference reviews.

I'm a Sabres fan and was 8 years old when this game happened I remember nothing from this series except for snippets of game 1. Even though I didn't see the goal and apparently the rule regarding the skate in the crease got changed midseason that year I'll never say it was a good goal lol. This also made me hate Dallas to this day and forever lol

oof, salty much? The fact he was in crease had nothing to do with the goal. Disallowing that is on par with goals being recalled, because a player that was entering the bench and was no longer really a part of the play kept the wrong foot on the ice and was "off side". If that's the case, shouldn't the team be also getting a too many men on the ice penalty?

Why? The two line rule allowed for a pass from the defensive zone out to center ice. Prior to the two line rule, you had to carry the puck out of the defensive zone. It allowed for much longer passes and sure mede sense at the time.

The addition of the 2 line pass rule allowed you to pass from the defensive zone up to the red line. The rule increased how far you could pass.

As a goalie... the blue patch of ice does actually matter. We have an expectation that we’re going to stop a tiny piece of rubber moving at fifty to eighty miles an hour. In exchange we have an expectation that we have room to work. The crease is supposed to be reserved for the goalie. That’s our room to work. It may not have made a difference in this play but the rule existed for a reason

It's ironic that a Toronto fan is commenting on this whole episode, since the Leafs' Nick Kypreos deliberately jumping into Grant Fuhr in 1996 during Game 2 of the playoffs to end his season (after Fuhr had played in 79 games that year!) was one of the most notorious precipitants for this staggeringly bad rule that 98-99 season. Goalies were dominant so thugs would run them. Btw that 1996 playoff season was the season the Blues had Gretzky. ("Gretzky had it, lost it.")

The entire controversy is literally just people not knowing the rules. I've played hockey my entire life and was a level 4 (top level) referee. It was a good goal exactly as Steve explained in the video. Why are people still complaining about this? What's your argument? But I thought the rules were something else? Well, they're not. Sorry. The rule was actually specifically written for exactly this scenario. A player cannot just hangout in the crease, this is the goalie's designated area, however, if the puck enters the crease and is not fully under the goaltenders control, players may then enter the cease to play the puck. He leaves the cease then comes back in to play the puck which he kicks to his stick and scores. Hockey is a very dynamic game. You can't look at a single still image and say no goal. What happened immediately before that typically matters.

It was really late. More like 2am. I must’ve fallen asleep because it was the yelling that woke me up. You can buy shirts in Buffalo that say “Wide right, no goal, forward pass, no goal 2. Welcome to Buffalo.” And an extra thing, when you mentioning Hasek’s awards you forgot his 2 straight Hart Trophy wins, his 2 straight Lester Pearson wins, and between all that he also won a worlds strongest man competition by single-handedly carrying the entire Czech Republic team on his back for a Gold Medal...literally. Watch the gold medal game, they are literally on his back.

Its a shame you weren't alive to watch Hasek in his prime, with your home team. I'm a Red Wings fan, so I got to cheer for his magnificence after he left Bufallo, but age was starting to show, and by 2008 Chris Osgood took back the role of starter from the Dominator during the playoffs on route to winning the Stanley Cup. Nevertheless, my admiration and appreciation for Hasek as the greatest goaltender of all time remained.

Its funny that they blamed goalies equipment for the lack of scoring in the late 90's and early 2000's. I will admit yes it sometimes got out of hand but they refuse to admit one thing that also changed was that everyone basically started playing the trap game. Shooting was basically at an all time low as well. Teams were focused more on defense than offense.

What's hysterical is that it was a combo of everyone trapping to slow down the Wings, the goalies actually ... y'know ... getting good, and the bullshit that was the two line pass rule. The Devils get blamed because they just used it to beat the Wings in that first cup run, they ditched it after Lemaire left. At the very minimum you have to give Sabres fans that the ruling wasn't consistent. I see the rule as reading "Unless the puck is in the crease area, a player of the attacking side may not stand in the goal crease. If a player has entered the crease prior to the puck, and subsequently the puck should enter the net while such conditions prevail, the apparent goal shall not be allowed" I still don't understand how it's a good goal. The NHL saying he still had possession when he took the shot so it counts as him leaving the crease, therefore makes it a legal play is revisionist history imo. It is obviously against the spirit of the rule

You said that Buffalo fans call this "No Goal". I'm a Detroit fan who's never had any particular reason to like or to dislike the Sabers, and I call it "No Goal". Any time I list Stanley Cup champions, I add a verbal asterisk to 1999, saying Dallas "won it on an illegal goal". The next year, the Buffalo Bills were eliminated by the play Tennessee fans call the"Music City Miracle". When Buffalo fans complain about the alleged "forward pass", I tell them I saw it and it was perfectly legal, so they should restrict their complaining to cases like Brett Hull's toe in the crease, where they have a legitimate point. Speaking of Brett Hull, he would finally win a legitimate Stanley Cup three years later, this time with Hasek as a teammate.
