I always wonder, what was said in the first intermission? Did they not ask Roy if he wanted out after that period? For sure should have been pulled after 7 goals either way. Also a Dang It for you.... Joe Sakic won the Conn Smythe in 1996. Roy won it in 2001.

There had been rumors about Roy being traded during that summer and the prior season. Houle the GM was buddy buddy with Tremblay. It's hard to believe that they didn't talk during the intermission. I always believed it was a set-up to get rid of Roy.

I remember this, Roy had asked to be pulled early in in the first and un the intermission, but Mario Tremblay forced him to stay in and refused. It seems there was bad blood between the two. Roy was almost like an assistant coach and took on leadership in the dressing room before with Demers. But Tremblay saw that as a threat and would tell him to shut up because he wasn't the coach. What's even more stupid is the day after this game, the Canadiens held a press conference and said Roy is suspended and we want to trade him asap so we'll take any offer. (Who is stupid enough to display their cards before the negotiation and say they'll take the lowest offer?) Everyone was stunned that we only got 1 extra no-name player for Roy? Mike Keane is said to have stood up for Roy and so as a result he was traded too. This is undoubtably the worst trade in NHL history.

My family moved from Montreal to Denver in '84. Remember when the Nordiques arrived in the summer of '95, knew how good they were, and kept telling all my friends that we'd have a Cup within a year, maybe two at the most. No one understood. Then the Roy trade went down, and I just lost it. I couldn't believe that after growing up watching the Habs mop up the NHL in the mid/late 70's, that I was going to be able to see more Cup victories in our newly adopted home town. So, yeah...I bought season tix, and held them for the next decade. I was spoiled rotten with that Avs team/core players.

What you don't mention is that they were roommates on the road and they absolutely hated each other. @Puckman637 Wrong about the penalty. The call the ref made was wrong. The NHL even came out afterwards and said it was wrong. The officials for that series were pulled from the postseason crews. Whether or not the Golden Knights executed on the PK is a separate issue, but the 5 minute major penalty was the wrong penalty to assess in that situation.

This game was the intro to the 5 years that followed: Rejean Houle's career as Montreal's GM. Those 5 years are a colossal 'Dang It' on their own, and a period we still haven't recovered from - 21 years after Houle finally got the boot. Truly the darkest of times here in Montreal, in recent hockey history.

Roy was my idol growing up (i played nets).... i was born in 79, and got to watch a lot of habs games growing up. When this night happened, my new fav team became the Avs. Continuing my worship of Roy and literally mimicking his style (thankfully not his temper), Roy's choice to leave left a mark on my life forever. His courageous leave made me feel like i could walk and make my own way in life. It really did echo and resonate with many people of all ages. I still remember many people saying "anything is possible, look they traded Gretzky"... but some said "you can make anything possible, look what Roy did!". I'll never forget Roy's courage!

I even enjoy Dryden's book and think Beliveau was one of the best and most important players to ever skate. I love their history; without a great rival each team would be poorer. I actually watched that game live. It was a Saturday night game on CBC. Watching the highlights, it is quite obvious that the Canadians defense was the culprit. They were horrible. Since that trade, the Roy Curse lives on. The Canadians have not win another Stanley Cup again.

I had passed out early the night before and there was no smart phones so i didnt see sportscenter that morning. Would definitely like to know what was going on behind the scenes in Montreal, since Roy probably stole a cup for the Canadians they probably wouldn’t have won without him. That death stare by the coach says it all I’m a firm believer a franchise player is more valuable than a coach since many coaches get shuffled around like a deck of cards. If the owner of the Canadians thought backing the coach vs Roy was a good idea then ultimately, he made the mistake of backing a replaceable coach vs and unreplaceable player!

I think Steve’s video about the Eric Lindros trade shows that that one reverberated for decades, which not coincidentally built the Avs into the powerhouse they were, with Roy becoming the final piece in the puzzle. YES! This game was a huge deal... the Avalanche went on as a dominant force in the league for several years, in large part because of Roy (the Avs team of this era was actually pretty stacked -- it was practically Team Canada at one point). Meanwhile the Habs struggled through this period... let's be honest, they have ever since. The Koivu era had some moments, but it's only now that they once again have the best goalie in the league that they're doing well. Montreal was robbed of arguably the best goaltender ever because of the BONEHEADED decisions by the Habs coaching staff that night. I've always felt that not enough people realized how consequential this game was - thank you for pointing it out.

The video, and most of the comments, leave out one very important detail, one that makes Roy's departure seem all the more tragic and pathetic, as on that night he was caught up in another, much older beef, that didn't involve him at all. Roy and Tremblay were once teammates for a season as Steve points out, but more importantly, Mario Tremblay used to play for Scotty Bowman and he absolutely HATED the guy, plus he always had that hot temper. So take that into consideration as you wonder what was going on in his mind during that first intermission: Tremblay was being taken to the woodshed by his nemesis, who was exposing him as the noob that he was, on national TV, on a Saturday night, in front of the most demanding fanbase in the league. So of course he left his all-star goalie in the game because what else could he do, and that's what brought an already simmering conflict with Roy to a full boil in just a few minutes.

Tremblay never had what it took to be a good coach and the Habs paid for it for years to come thanks to that. Had he removed Roy after the first period, the history of the Habs probably would've changed forever but we'll never know. This Dang-It, as a Habs fan living in Montreal, is on us. As a Habs fan this is one of the hardest games to watch. I'll never understand how he wasn't pulled, not even after the first period, but during the first period. Montreal's defense at the time was a travesty. And yet, many people looked at this and criticized Roy for his reaction. You leave a guy out for 9 goals and heckle him while doing so? People have pride, and Roy more than most... There clearly was something going on behind the scenes between the coach and/or ownership, and Patrick. Was heartbreaking to watch my favourite player of all time leave my team and go to another. I was happy to see him win in Colorado, he clearly wasn't going to in Montreal.

It is even more atrocious when you realize that it was because Mario Tremblay was Patrick Roy's roommate in his rookie year and mario abused him massively. So when he had the chance to coach and Roy was their goalie, he took GLEE in abusing him there too. He told Cory all about it but he just said ' hes the coach, what you gonna do?' That game showed what patrick would do. He actually went to Cory and said ' I told you this would happen'. referring to Marios abuses being visible, Not that he played his last game. THAT happened in the locker room after the game. THERE is when all the crap hit the fan. For added meat to the story, after this happened, Tremblay lasted only 5 more years as a coach. After that he ran back to Lemaire's control in Minnesota as an assistant and then he became a TV announcer. Imagine being THE GUY who ran Patrick Roy out of Montreal. Look it up.

In Serge Savard’s bio, published last year, he mentioned that he had plans to trade Roy. He had observed that Roy had a lot of influence on coach Demers, and it was having a negative effect on the team. Then Savard and Demers got fired, five games in the season and the trade didn’t occurred , until the Detroit game. To me, the responsable for that fiasco Is no other than former team president Ronald Corey. Footnote ...
