Im such a big fan of NiNi, and watch all the her dramas and agreed with you Love and Destiny are one of the best all time drama, really recommend it for those not yet watch it. Really disappointed that drama dont get much attention but seriously that drama deserved better. I really like her in Rise of the Phoenix best. She truly embodied the naive, child-like woman who later grew up all battle hardened simply by the intrigues surrounding that royal family. From start to finish, she was Feng Qiu Wei the woman. She was that good in that role. Truly remarkable as she brought us the audience, and herself, through the wringer of so many emotions.

I tend to agree with many of your opinions. When I first saw NiNi it was in Flowers or War and I immediately thought -- wow.. she is so talented and will go far. Her acting is incredibly natural and when she smiles you actually feel her happiness. I've watched period dramas all my life and I'm so tired of the repressed acting we get from people like Yang Mi, who has 1/18th of the talent that NiNi has. I loved Love and Destiny and it's one of those dramas that come out every 1-2 years that's really good. I guess it really takes a veteran of dramas to appreciate these kinds, and to recognize the detail and standard of acting.

Gong Li was in "Memoirs of a Geisha" not to mention now "Mulan" and of course with her other notable works like "Farewell my Concubine". Whereas Xun hasn't been in the international spotlight as much. I just recently (about a 2 years or so) discovered how great she is through Ruyi's love in the palace and Red Sorghum. However, I feel it was almost by accident that I stumbled into it because I wasn't satisfied with "Story of Yanxi Palace" and wanted to see a realistic take on it

@@Ashley-vs8nu As I know, Xun is one of the highest profile actress in China. She is the favorite model by many high class fashion and comestic brands like Dior or Chanel. Her international career is not as rich as Gong Li, she appeared in Cloud Atlas 2012 I believe but her works in mainland is highly appreciated across Asian and inter-audiences. But yeah, she is worthy to be mentioned more.

Once I got into the story... I found that 70 episodes was not enough! It kinda broke my heart! I never watched these kind of shows until Eternal Love. I love these far more than American dramas! I knew her from the film "Suddenly Seventeen" where I watched it because of Wang Ta Lu but I fell for NiNi instead. She was super gorgeous there and like you said I thought she was a model be4 entering the film industry. I love Ni Ni! Of course she has had good projects with great directors like Zhang Yimou but I think what impressed me was when she acted opposite Angelababy in the Chinese adaptation of Bride Wars which is a terrible film (both the English and the Chinese versions) but she was very charismatic in that. I loved her so much in Rise of the Phoenixes, that's my favourite project of hers and I am looking forward to My Best Friend's Story. And yes yes yes she has a great presence as a model and has really great high fashion looks. I hope she reaches the legendary status like other Zhang Yimou stars like Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li.

I first encountered Nini in Rise of the Phoenix on Netflix and I must say I was captivated. The way she carried herself and her interaction with her co star was just beautiful. her on screen presence was captivating and i really wanted to keep watching but for some reason i wasn't into the court affairs at that time so i stopped watching Rise of the phoenix but i frequently go back on Netflix to watch the trailer. ugh she really feels like she was made for the screen. I somehow felt like her real life self as not girly after watching some behind the scene clips of Rise of the Phoenix. Now i must confess, maybe i was on haitus from youtube or just didn't pay enough attention but i did not see you rave about Love and destiny. I will check it out soon. Cause i can not get enough of her. and if it is the ultimate better version of gods-falling-inlove then, sign me up. i have sat through enough crappy drama just because i love the genre. I am in love with Liu Shishi and if you are going to talk about her then i am 100% looking forward to it. YAY!

Honestly I could read and listen to essays about Ni Ni for hours. Like Tang Yan, she also had a late debut into acting at 23-ish, which I find to be interesting. While some people say that she hasn't had a project that has topped Flowers of War yet and how she hasn't had multiple breakthrough roles like Zhou Dongyu has, you can see how determined she is about improving her acting and how passionate she is about it based on her lineup of works. Despite her acting surpassing that of most of her peers, she still receives criticism, which was partly why she decided to do a theatre play in order to challenge herself. I also really love how far she's come. Like you said, she had no formal training in acting, and so she struggled with crying scenes on the set of Flowers of War, and now crying scenes is one of her strongest suits. In a way, her passion and determination reminds me of TVB actress Fala Chen who left the station at the height of her career to study at Julliard. While Fala Chen's acting wasn't as good as Ni Ni when she left, I admire her courage to take a break from her career in order to focus on the art of acting. And lastly, yup I totally agree, Ni Ni's 氣質 is just absolutely enchanting. I also watched the teaser for Shockwave 2, and I don't know if it was just me, but there was a voice that sounded like hers that spoke Cantonese. It would be really cool if she did learn Cantonese for the role, kind of like how Zhou Xun learned Cantonese for her role in Overheard 3. Not mainly mainland actors bother with learning Cantonese in HK films, so it would really show her commitment if she did. Looking forward to hearing the next actress you'll talk about! I'm also curious to hear your thoughts about Yang Zi. She's quite the controversial actress too with some people loving her and others thinking she's overrated. She definitely has her weaknesses, but I still enjoy watching her. I think that she has a similar mindset about wanting to become a serious actress, despite all of her idol roles. I'm curious to see how The Psychologist turns out.

Yang Zi I can understand why people like her cause she can emote and cry but my issue is whenever she acts "cute" or ingenue. It is just too much like insufferable. In my opinion a girl like Xuan Lu is miles better than she is but also criminally underrated because her look is not the typical childish doll Chinese PDs like.

I must admit Nini looks beautiful and photogenic. She is quite similar with Tiffany Tan @ Luo Jin's wife whom has both appearance and talent in acting. Personally I feel after watch both cdrama - The Rise of Phoenix & Love & Destiny, she should takes up role which is not too dramatic. Most people always search for happy ending and The Rise of Phoenix has a very dramatic ending and the whole story is on the heavy side too. As for Love & Destiny this drama is really underrated. The whole story is so wonderful plus the OST are nicely fitted for it. Sorry to say that nowadays audiences especially those young's ones they opt to go for younger, girlish, thin, skinny boys as the ML whom they called "handsome". Anyway I hope to see more Nini's work especially in drama soon with mature and hot dudes 😊💪

Mahalo 🌺 Nui! I just finished “The Rise of The Phoenixes” and was looking to learn about Ni Ni … as she was as captiving as Chen! While this drama definitely has it flaws (for me, NOT the length as I love character devopment, I would like to know why you will not finish it please) … the costumes & sets are stunningly exquisite!!! And Ni Ni carries it all as female or male like she was born with them on her from the past. One cannot take their eyes off of her to read the subtitles of great frustratons! Her natural understated elegance is soooo powerful. And then to learn how she is in real life is the best icing on the cake ever. Many Blessings to her continued opportunities to be all she can be in this life. As for the storyline … it was so hard to wait sooo long for things to finally take off. Then at the end, I sat stupified wondering if I just watched an historic style soapy soap opera???? … that somehow I got duped into watching a soap opera …. cause I hate them! … as it was way over the top! Take Chen’s psychopathic brother’s 3 year old behavior towards the end for starters, was absolutely ridiculous. My old mystric shrink once stated to me many decades ago, that most people are emotionally stuck at around age 3-4 … okay, but this was way too indulgent. Again, thanks for your very helpful videos!
