I think we can all agree Luo Yunxi's visuals was the only thing keeping fans watching if you love him enough, but it gets so ridiculous towards the later end of the drama that made me question whether or not the director even had some common sense at all. (Spoiler alert) something happened to the Male lead that made him have to change his identity and pretended the old him had died, and all he did was CHANGING HIS CLOTHES. That's it. And made ppl call him a new name. I'm like????? Can he at least wear a veil or make up or something that make him look slightly different than his old appearance? Nope just different clothes colour. And the conversation w the female lead who thought he was dead was just so awkward and uncomfortable to watch. And the SLOW.MOTION. o.m.g. the kissing slow motions and spinning in the air while holding each other were so overdone and unromantic. Female lead was weak. Her power fluctuated depending on how the plot demanded. Protagonists unimpressive, something you have seen a thousand times in any other drama. I felt bad for Luo Yunxi. He was finally the lead of a drama and they made him do this crap.

The only standout in this drama is the fact that nobody quite does Aesthetic Angst and Suffering like LYX. LYX is amazing at pretty on screen pain, also a highlight of Ashes of Love, and one of the reasons Immortality might be worth watching, that was perfect casting, even if I have no idea how they'll adapt a novel with a plot that is mostly, absolutely, going to be be censured. And I guess the 2nd Prince/ Lord Lu is an entertaining villain with his suppressed anger and madness that comes out in outbursts. But everything else in this drama is either illogical or just boring and similar to a lot of other wuxias. Also (spoiler alert) I have never seen such low effort at pretending to be dead/being another person as in this drama. No mask, no disguising voice, no change in hairstyle, nothing to change appearance except going from white robes to grey ones like a reverse Gandalf and say to the FL he's not who he was, while staying in his usual inn run by his friend and following the FL around .

I literally stopped at the same episode and story point like you. But I simply couldn’t grab why it wasn’t interesting enough to move on despite Luo YunXi. It’s maybe because of a whole lot of recycled actors from ”Ashes of Love” which I don’t really enjoyed watching 🙄 and may be on the other hand because of all the plot holes you mentioned... I will wait for ErHa to watch YunXi in a drama - hopefully without any logic mistakes 😅

I got the news that LYX will act in this drama last year and started reading the novel, I couldn't get pass like 20% of it. Wasn't sure if it's actually a popular novel but it didn't live up to my expectations anyway. Wasn't interested in the drama either because of my disappointment in the novel and I'm not a fan of Yukee's acting or visuals. Plot is so important these days, even popular actors can't save weak plot dramas.

Love love your outfit and hairstyle for this “rant” video. The fan just make this look so perfectly. I stopped watching after episode 3 so no clue about this drama. Yes, as a Final Fantasy XIV long time player, the whole forum for FFXIV there were a comparison screenshots between the drama and the game. Didn’t know that the drama actually deleted the scenes. However your rant just made me LOL. Thanks for sharing your rant and wish someone in the C-drama industry hires you for big $$$ to at least give your opinions on those crappy series. 😊🤣

I have watched 33 eps of "And the winner is love" with English subtitles. In those 33 eps it was never explained how he buried the horse by himself. Lol. I watched the remaining eps without subs, but since I don't understand Chinese I don't know if it was ever explained. There are several other later plot points that are even more frustrating, to say the least (I won't list them, it takes too long). But the positives are that Lou Yunxi is finally a lead, and a romantic lead as well. Now he just needs a good script and a second lead that can match him. Yes, I like Luo so much that I suffered through every episode, half of them without subs. XD Edit: So I went back and watched the final 5 eps with subtitles. I think Luo did a good job with what he was given.

Love your rant! I'm only watching the drama for Luo Yunxi and Yukee Chan and damn it's painful. The show's writing sucks so bad...the direction is horrible too. They always shoot from a higher angle so all the actors look shorter. I feel so bad for the two actors cuz they're trying their best and they actually have chemistry; they both look so good too! I remember reading someone saying that it feels like the script was written by a 15 year old...I think they're being kind. A 15 year old could probably do a better job than this. Although the show does make me think that even though LYX is already going to play one awesome Shizun in Hao Yi Xing, seeing how good he looks with the fan makes me wish he could play another Shizun as well if the book ever got a live action treatment: Shen Qingqiu of The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System. He would make such an awesome SQQ!

I was over it with the horse burial myself.....A friend and I buried a dog in his backyard and it took the two of us more than an hour to dig a big and deep enough hole, in the winter and we both got sweaty and disheveled doing so. And running after the attacker with the "precious item" was freaking stupid.

Sorry it was a disappointment for some. I personally loved it. Loved everything about it. Loved the cute chemistry between Leo and Yuki. IMHO, I thought their performances was rather natural. Also got to give credit to Leo for filming with an injured leg. Was it lagging? Yes, a bit. Was it mundane? Yes, a tad. Let’s face it, falling in love can be complicated and messy such as real life. I wasn’t expecting roses and unicorns but was expecting frustrations and heartaches.

As a writer and editor I just couldn't move past so many of the issues you mentioned, from logic holes to deus ex machina moments to burying the horse (?!). However, as a native English speaker reading subtitles, I thought (hoped) that maybe I was missing something in translation or nuance. I mean, maybe I'm just not culturally literate enough? But I also couldn't get past all the ??? moments and I too gave up at Ep. 3. Thank you, AvenueX for the comprehensive rant - I was constantly exclaiming as you spoke - 'Yes, that! And that!'. I'm glad it wasn't just me . . .

Once upon a time, when I watched period dramas, I used to wonder how all these people can bury full grown humans and carve out the tombstone with their bare hands in a matter of hours. I guess if they can do it with humans, they can do it with animals. I also hated RunYu in Ashes of Love and totally became a fan of Leo watching And the Winner is Love. Then I watched Princess Silver while waiting for Winner to update, and I realized that each idol drama is structured to make the audience love the male lead.

I've managed to watched till episode 5 and after that I keep clicking the fast forward button. 🤣 The pace was too slow for me~ I totally agree with the lacking of logic especially when the female lead carrying that so called important scroll so casually around. She even sits with the chief guardian to have some drinks (?) and the bag was just hanging on her back, and I was yelling, "Girl! The bag! Put the bag on the table! Hug it!". It's awesome that the bag was safe and sound till the tournament. 🤭 What kept me still watching (by clicking the fast forward button) is the male lead. His visuals were dazzling~ And I do love his fan fighting scenes 🤭

Like you, I only watched the first two episodes before deciding that it wasn’t worth my time. I was enraged when that girl gave the monk the box. It made no sense! Her aunt was right there and she decides to give it to a stranger because he’s a monk. Your friend was just poisoned at this monk’s monastery, yet you entrusted him with the box. To top it off, the story is also very dull. Poor Luo Yunxi, I was really looking forward to him leading a drama.

my first Chinese drama was on Netflix icefantasy, then the ashes of love, then the untamed, I quickly learned that Chinese drama has a completely different perspective to what I was used to, not so much about material things, like great cgi, costumes, fast pace, or lack of plot holes, or other stuff not executed correctly, but about character building at a slow pace.,loyalty, betrayal,.chemistry between the leads and not to forget martial arts. I can forgive the former, as long as the latter is strong. This drama is ok, I will watch to the end, because I am interested to know if the chief guardian will stay loyal to her or betray her at some point. I think the chemistry between the leads is good, all three of them. Boring parts.....will be skipped.

I forced myself to watch the whole thing just so that I could rate it. My rating is 1/10. 😂🤣 aside from all the things you talked about, this drama shouldn't even be considered as wuxia because after the first three episodes, we barely got any fight scenes. What we got instead were just people talking. Literally, just talking after talking and no actions at all. Along with these talking scenes, we also got sappy music that doesn't even go with anything. They put random background music everywhere. Also, a lot of characters were introduced just to be killed off. 🤦‍♀️ To top this off, they turned male lead into a lying jerk. Seriously, don't waste your time. There were also no chemistry between the two leads. Their kisses were horrible lame.

So let me just clarify a little since I watched a little further (beware of spoiler): 1. The 心法 amd 功夫 do need to be practiced together. It's like yin and yang. The father actually invented the 功夫 and the 心法 was invented by the 师兄's father (the strong protector's protector). So if you practice only the gongfu, you're fine until some level (it has 9 level all together) but the higher the level, you'll need the xinfa to suppress the craziness that's usurping your mind. And the girl's father was drowned in the gongfu, bcoz he wanted to make his palace known into the world (back then it was not a very reknown group until the father went crazy). 2. The uniform is their pride. They talked about how they want to prove they are not evil, and the girl was trying to clear the palace name. So they proudly wear their uniform to the ceremony. 3. The treasure was actually not carried by the girl. It was actually carried by someone else. She was a decoy. Yes, she is reckless. But what do you expect from a 15 y.o girl? 4. The male lead is asked by the girl's godfather to protect. And he actually doubt the group has a spy. That's why he judged it's better for him to escort the treasure himself. Which turns out to be fake. Btw, the box has a unique lock that only the girl knows how to open. So if someone else unknowingly open the chest without the correct order, it will self-lock and you can't open it again. And SPOILER again: Female lead actually don't need the treasure (the xinfa & gongfu scroll) coz the girl actually already memorized the whole thing. But she was to weak to practise them, which is why she didn't. After the male lead tranfer his neigong to her, she was finally strong enough to practise the gongfu & xinfa and so she did. Yes, this drama has a lot of romantic scene that's too forced to be there. But the logic is still somewhat acceptable. At least they came up with something to explain why they do this and that even if it felt like being forced in. 😅😅

I fell in love with Luo Yunxi in Ashes of Love and then watched his previous works and fell even more. I was so excited for this drama because he was the lead and would finally get a good ending with the female lead. Ugh. He couldn't save this drama. I watched the entire thing. I don't know if it was the overly baby female voice they chose for the female lead, the non character growth of the female lead, the oddly placed light and happy music during what should have been serious scenes, etc. TO be fair, I didn't like her acting in Ashes of Love either. Looking at your outfit again... Is there a good source you would recommend that explores the role hairpins have in Chinese culture throughout different dynasties? Does anyone uses it nowadays to send out any kind of message? Is the one you have in your hair just a 'meaningless' decoration? Do they use it properly in dramas? How are they used? Should we just consider it that they mark people as adults and are also exchanged as courting gifts? Would be great if you would take a stab at the subject of course, like you did when explaining to us a bit more about the intricacies of the Beijing opera, but I am just honestly curious. Through various dramas one can see it is obviously an important item, usually but not always used in the courting process, but I know I am missing a lot of context. For example, I tried watching the 'Ashes of Love' as so many people love it. Couldn't watch it in the end due to reasons so I just skipped around a lot. There was this whole thing with the main lead hairpin and him giving it and taking it from the female lead, and there was that scene where her engagement was confirmed with her true finance and pins were returned and given and beyond obvious 'She is carrying my hairpin not yours! Ha ha!' there was clearly a bunch of subtext. When googling I found not a lot more than one can found in a wiki article. As I like watching this type of drama, it would be nice to understand this a bit more.

Yea "And the Winner is Love" is a disappointment. The story is just not there. The romance is frustrating and draggy from time to time. The characters are boring and cliche. Mu Yuan is probably the only interesting character in the entire drama. The only thing I appreciate is the effort cast put into the drama in an otherwise lousy story with lousy characters. Sigh You should check out Love in Between. It's a far superior new wuxia drama. However, romance isn't its focus. In fact, the romance is probably its weakest. Still that couple is not as annoying as the couple in And the Winner is Love. However, it has far superior characters and storyline. I've enjoy the Love in Between story in the first 10 episodes more than the entirety of ATWIL. Aided by the fact the pacing is like 3-4 times faster. Love in Between is not finished yet but initial impression is good. Hope it finish strong.

I was really looking forward to this drama BUT it was so painful to watch I fast forward so many scenes,there are only a few fight scenes hardly any suspense, not much humour, Leo is a great actor but the script was lacking there were some good scenes between Leo and his father Leo and the second male lead who had a lot more natural chemistry going on with Yukee then Leo was ever able to muster up. The kissing and romantic scenes were awkward and mostly hard to watch looked so unnatural. The most annoying thing about this drama was the grating unbearable background music I’d rather stick a pin in my eye then listen to it. Most of the scenes were nonstop boring conversations.

I watched this one a bit late but I was hollering the whole time. 😂😂 she needs a cookie. And an official position as a C-Drama scripts editor because they'd get so many more viewers if they let her review their stuff before they air them.

I enjoy your reviews. Great video. I love Chinese dramas. I wrote a 4 book series, bl and fantasy. Terrified to have American readers read it. It would do beautifully as a Chinese historical fantasy story, but my Chinese friend has gotten ill he's lives in the country by Baejing, he loved it and was going to help me with core analogy of Chinese, fantasy, history fairy tales. You have a great way of thinking, people should take your reviews into consideration.

@Avenuex Yes!! YES TO ALL OF THAT. We stopped watching at the same place for primarily the same reason. I was so disappointed because I'd been looking forward to And The Winner is Love. Ah, well! Thanks for this wonderful piece of emoting. 😄😄😄
