Heard this w MTT @ SF Symphony. An academic snooze. Even projections of "nature" didn''t help.

Some of this music is lovely. The effects are kind of dazzling. But what's the deal with these meta-tonal passages? They're really putting me off. Maybe I'm quite old-fashioned; I'm interested in sound, and less interested in postmodern jokes about the subversion of genre. It's better than that, they're not exactly *jokes* and they're extremely accomplished, but they're still too close to that for me to love this completely like I love, say, Varese, or Globokar or Lutaslawski at his best.

Don't get me wrong, it's really good fun. But it's also a bit icky for me, that clever winking at the audience.

If you call this icky, I guess you have an old-fashioned mindset indeed. :) I believe it is exactly Castiglioni's incorporation of simple, almost naive sounding tonal fragments which give his highly refined textures such a distinct flavor.

Yeah, they don't sound naive to me, they sound postmodern and knowing. That means these passages take me away from the world of pure sound and into the world of pastiche. Not so bothered about that world.

there isn't anything as postmodernism in this music, nor jokes, nor subversion of genre. That weren't his goals. It's a bit difficult to explain how and why, especially in english. But trust me: he was completely uninterested in that approach.
