Magic needs “greater spell” or “greater auto attack” which is essentially an ability that fires a staff auto attack using your current mainhand spell. The ability can be activated off global cooldown every 7 ticks (the same as 4ticking) but does not require waiting the extra tick. The ability can be activated by revolution. This ability takes away 4ticking by some fancy AA resets to prevent 4ticking along with it, but is still a dpm increase by not requiring waiting for 1 tick every two abilities, and does not require switching between wand and staff. This should be a midlevel quest reward. Greater chain should still be made a bit better for single target damage, but greater AA or greater spell needs to exist.

Honestly i think this codex was put into the game for the upcoming elder god war dungeons. Whenever they put an item into the game that doesnt currently seem to be useful i feel like it ends up being good in future updates

Im a frequent user of Greater chain and I only partually agree to what you're saying. Its very convenient in ED3 for mob cleaning together with Essence of Finality (Gurthix staff spec), as well als the skeletons and rift of undead at Taraket. I somethimes kill the first rift without attacking directly before he hits 200k the first time, by combining Greater chain with Guthix staff and Caroming switch, if there are minnions around.

I think greater chain is a neat idea from a design perspective because it gives magic a distinct feel to ranged and melee. The main problem is of course that there isn't currently much reason to use this in game due to the high cost of the codex and relatively low money you can make with slayer. Even for gwd1 it can be hard to group the minions enough to make it worthwhile for camping K'ril. It could give better farming xp per hour at Turoths with the chain+corruption blast combo, but I doubt this would be game-changing enough to be worth it. Nevertheless, I am intrigued by it because I wonder if the Elder god wars dungeon might have 1 or 2 boss encounters involving mobs of minions where this ability could shine. Definitely not getting this ability any time soon, but I am hopeful that things could change as they release more content updates.

Greater Chain is niche but that's not what magic needed. It needs a real upgrade not a niche sometimes useful ability that doesn't work in most PVM encounters.

I think greater chain needs to have the same effect as greater ricochet too but I highly doubt they will change that seeing as they purposely designed it so range can get the boost

Honestly though why is it so hard to understand that not everyone will do pvm? This greater ability can help those who loves doing afk training, money making, combat method. Jagex thinks for everyone. Not just the pvmers (boss specifically) .

It's nice, but part of a boss loot table that will keep it too rare (expensive) to have any true utility for non-pvmers. There are better upgrades for less money. Maybe for the afk-pvmer with a big cashpile.

id imagine its pretty good at telos for the golems or whatever, even gwd1 itd technically increase your drops per hour as you can stand so chain hits all zammy minions then use even just wild magic and kill them all and theyd probably spawn again before krill is dead. theres gonna be tons of niche spots for it like at bm when killing chargers,fight kiln runs, and many slayer tasks

Yeah, but I don't think Raksha will be farmed so hard the codex will drop to beginner pvmer prices. Maybe rich pvmers who want collection logs.

and unless your at enrages that most people cant do, golems can be 2 hit by detonate/wave combo, making this only useful if you dont do that, which you should.

Greater chain is so much fun at ed3. Its great cause I can't afford grico and Im dropping all the monsters so quick is so satisfying. I highly recommend the ability especially for how much it's worth. You won't regret it

They might as well just make an extra ability codex for ranged/mage with the current greater chain passive and one with the current ranged chian thingy. That way the single target dsp one will retain big value like now and for people who love slayer they get an extra ability thats actualy payable and not 100m+.

They didn't make Greater Chain the same as Greater Ricochet because they want both styles and their abilities to feel different, and this was their way of doing that.

Looking at some formulas i found a hint that it might be dependent on other stuff as well. For example here runescape.wiki/w/Affinity Where it says that your style bonus is dependent on total armor of mixed combat styles. It is really confusing.

Its just sad to see how hard melee and ranged got boosted and magic just got left alone magic is by far my favo style and i hate the fact that its now like better off to take melee or ranged hopefully they work some more on magic

I wouldn't say sad considering how hard mage carried for at least a year when rago came out and sonic wave had 20% accuracy bonus on next attack... Definitely had its time to shine

The sgb spec is usable with all 3 combat styles. You just need the ingenuity of humans ability so it will hit even when wearing mele / mage gear

i think they should nerf ricochet and buff chain to be the same in between - works like ricochet does right now but the subsequent hits should not stack with anything else. like become kind of typeless hits (no soulsplit heals, no bakriminel proc chances, no ECB special...)
