150 years ago Sainsbury’s opened their first store and Christmas changed forever. Coincidence? Almost certainly… ho ho ho. Presenting Sainsbury’s Christmas advert 2019.

From the Sainsbury’s Wikipedia page: In April 2018, Coupe (CEO of Sainsbury’s) engaged in an interview in relation to a forthcoming merger between Sainsbury's and Walmart owned UK subsidiary ASDA. After the first interview occurred, during the transition to the next, his microphone remained switched on and he began singing 'We're in the Money'.[8] This angered many who believed the merger would create a monopoly in the supermarket industry. It also caused controversy due to the management restructures within Sainsbury's stores at the time with many managers and supervisors facing redundancy. It was also reported that Coupe would make over six hundred thousand pounds from the merger thus reinforcing the beliefs of many that CEO pay is unfairly high in contrast to large numbers of workers below them that earn significantly lower wages. In 2019, he was criticised for cutting a £10 bonus that was provided to staff in lieu of a Christmas party[11] in a year where he took home £3.9 million total compensation. In a 2006 report the British anti-poverty charity War on Want criticised the conditions faced by Kenyan workers supplying Sainsbury's with cut flowers.[226] In 2007 Sainsburys was fined for its involvement in a dairy price-fixing cartel along with other large retailers and processors.[221][222]

This seems a bit half-hearted as an origin story. It should be Mrs Sainsbury riding into Bethlehem on a donkey. Then we see the wisemen and shepherds drawing near bearing wine and mince pies, Mary Sainsbury is sweating and straining but then instead of giving birth to our lord and saviour the son of god, she was just lifting a roast turkey out of the oven, and everyone sits down to a lovely Christmas dinner in the stable. That seems like the best way for a supermarket to really lay claim to Christmas. I've got a great idea for the Easter advert too.

I'm disgusted, all these years & the fact that a third of all Victorian Children were in fact BAME has clearly been repressed & all but deleted from history; utterly disgraceful. Thank you J. Sainsbury for righting this wrong & travesty.

Interesting how it's only during the Christmas season that supermarket chains want to show 'meaningful' media. I'm sure it has nothing to do with motivating people to spend more during the harshest season
