From what I heard, when this show started Nick was the more successful one out of the two. His group 98 Degrees had sold millions of records, so he had the money. Jessica's first album did well, but her second album had flopped in the USA. It was this show that helped turn the tides and Jess became the super rich superstar. But at this point in the first season it was mostly Nick's money being used for everything. That is why he was on her case a lot for how much money she spent.
