Hi guys, Love your work! Regarding Kill hand the recorded version of the song and original lyrics are, My kill hand tattooed EVIL upon its brothers fist that filthy five did nothing to challenge or resist. Then further along says something about a wedding band being good and it being a long suffering shackle surrounding or binding all that rebel blood. I have all ways interpreted this as his crime was the murder of his wife which is a theme that has continued throughout his writing ever since. Cheers.

Sorry meant to add kill hand is a reference to him committing the crime. The hand that murdered his wife.

My favorite version of this is on the 'Live Seeds' album. It just builds to such a roar.

Some recognition for Cave’s band mates: Mr Warren Ellis on the violin and Mr Martin P Casey on the bass. Each is/was a member of a different great Australian band in addition to the Bad Seeds. Try diving into The Triffids and The Dirty Three (though there’s no lyrics to dissect there.) On the topic of film, Cave was in Ghosts of the Civil Dead, a prison film made in the 80s around the time this song was originally released. It’s brutal and brilliant. Dave Mason from the Reels is in it too. Glad you mentioned Johnny Cash, who had a version of the Mercy Seat on his covers album.

My god, I wanted to scream to the screen. I'm not to clever and English not my first language, but the many obvious things in the text that they just kind of got, after far to long speculation, made me exhausted. Another point, I would have liked them to listen also to the original, a musically very different version.
