I had the absolute priveledge to see Nick and The Bad Seeds last night in Leeds, and it changed my life. I've been an on-and-off fan for 30 years or so, but that was the first time seeing them live. I was in tears and the end of this song (it was the first time I'd heard it) and I'm the same now, watching it on KZbin. It is an absolute masterpiece.

I love Nick Cave. He captures the depth of pain in life - and doesn't try to paint a fairy tale as if that isn't there. The reality is death and loss is present in life for everyone. Nick captures that in a beautiful and profound way with his lyrics and music. And, in that way, his music also, paradoxically, brings healing. The majority genre in the book of Psalms, by the way, is "lament" (a cry of anguish or a cry for help).

After a career that has attempted to chronicle the depths of human misery, loss, debauchery and insanity it is plain to see and hear that Arthur's death has changed Nick. This is raw open grief expressed through the medium of heart-wrenchingly, painfully, beautiful music and as such will never be equalled. One of the hardest albums to listen to ...and one of his best. Thank you.

@@starvingartistful this album was in the can before his teenage boy died. The lyrics are coincidental. His older son died years after this, so that doesn't line up either. From everything I've read about him it seems like he's a pretty present and compassionate father. From everything I've read about you, which is admittedly that one sentence you wrote, seems like you're a cunt.

I first heard this song when it was released, and I really thought I understood the pain Nick is singing about. And then here I am, in 2022, where I now listen to this song from time to time with a broken heart, thinking about my dear cousin who was 32 years old when he died from COVID-19 last year. He was such an intense person, but still it all disappeared abruptly. He is not here anymore, and now I think I get it: nothing really matters.

When you're feeling like a lover Nothing really matters anymore I saw you standing there in the supermarket With your red dressing falling and your eyes are to the ground Nothing really matters, nothing really matters when the one you love is gone You're still in me, baby I need you In my heart, I need you Cause nothing really matters I'm standing in the doorway You're walking 'round my place in your red dress, hair hanging down With your eyes on one, we love the ones we can Cause nothing really matters when you're standing, standing I need you, need you Cause nothing really matters We follow the line of the palms of our hands You're standing in the supermarket, nothing, holding hands In your red dress, falling, falling in, falling in A long black car is waiting 'round I will miss you when you're gone I'll miss you when you're gone away forever Cause nothing really matters I thought I knew better, so much better And I need you I need you Cause nothing really matters On the night we wrecked like a train Purring cars and pouring rain Never felt right about, never again Cause nothing really matters Nothing really matters anymore, not even today No matter how hard I try When you're standing in the aisle, and no, baby Nothing, nothing, nothing I need, I need, I need you I need you I need you Just breathe, just breathe I need you

This version is so much better than the studio version. Nick's voice is laced with so much emotion here. I can't stop listening to it. Nick and the Bad Seeds gave us emotions and feelings from the pit of their insides in this version of the song. Its just so beautiful to listen to and watch. This is art at its finest. Its so sad people cannot see the beauty in this song. People say its too depressing and dark. That's Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds! But they took it to a whole other level with pain, sadness and emotion with this one. Thank You Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds! I've listened this song so many times, and that many times I've found myself absolutely detached from my "now"; dwelling in somebody else's story... making his feeling, so universal. I can cry every time I listen to this. Probably the most romantic song I've ever heard... made of pain & love, fear & blindness, subtlety & dependency, breathlessness & liberation. As it should be. Specially when you contextualize it. This has made my top 5 list favorite songs of my life. And that is hard to happen.

My dad passed away when I was 13, in 1996. I hadn't seen him in almost a year, as my parents were divorced and my mom had just remarried and we moved a bit further away. I was just a kid and assumed he'd always be there. I was busy making new friends since we moved, just running around the new neighborhood everywhere. A month before he passed, he called me and told me he loved me and began crying. I was so taken aback, I always just knew my dad loved me, so baffled, I remember saying "I know, I know, dad." - I don't think I told him I loved him back during that phone call, not because I didn't, but because as a kid to me it was assumed that he just knew I did, right? That was the last I spoke to him. The next thing I knew was we were going to see him in the hospital, comatose and drugged. He passed within a week then. I remember initially I felt crushed, but then in a way rejected the heaviness of the pain and just got mad and shut down. I was so shut down for many years. Parts of me became inaccessible to myself and others for a long time. I became this caricature of who I could be as a person. Always protective and aloof of showing my true feelings, just walled off. It's been only in the last few years when I realized I never really allowed myself to grieve for my dad that I was able to, and then the walls came down, and I became a real, vulnerable, but also more beautiful, person again. I feel that's happened with Nick Cave through his grief. We aren't getting the protective artistic persona this time, we're getting a haunted, hurting real person in a vulnerable state, who happens to be an artist, dealing with the pain through his medium. This is his most true work, and I feel so deeply for him, and am very grateful for the journey of catharsis that I get from listening to it.

"Nothing really matters" when what you loved -- that through which you saw, lived and breathed -- leaves you. This is the killing love, but it also the only type of love that brings life. Many people today never get to feel this.

This song is a perfect expression of the confusion, hopelessness and oppressive desperation of loss. You never know when it will hit you: standing in the supermarket, walking round your place, holding hands; And you blame yourself, you thought you knew better, so much better; And you tell yourself just breathe, just breathe, 'cause nothing really matters; And you reach out to those around you, the ones you still can; And you say: I need you Such a beautiful song, though it pains me to hear it

I used to listen to this song when my girlfriend got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It's a few years now, but hearing this just breaks me and reminds me of just sitting in her room as she injected her medication. Things are better now, fortunately, and we'll be moving in. But this song brings me back to the start of 2017. Jesus Christ. I know it's different from what Nick felt but at the time we genuinely didn't know how things are gonna be. So I can't really listen to this song, or the album for the matter. But when I do, it's truly something. Thank you, Nick.
