Today, or actually yesterday, was 9 months since my husband, John Giakoumakis, passed. I haven't listened to the song since then. I have been in shock this whole time til about a month ago when the pain began hitting, HARD. It was like running into a brick wall. Then I would start singing this song to myself and cry, even writing this I'm tearing up. I want to thank all of you for your kind words and emails. This song means even more to me now because of those of you who comforted me.

I've come to realise that, as perfect as song like this seems to me, it is not universal. Cave is speaking to those who know. My mother doesn't get this song, or songs like "Are you the one that I've been waiting for?" But people like my mother married their sweetheart from their teen years, and they are still married after 50 years. They are not in love, they are family, and they accept that they don't really like each other's personality that much. There is no growth, no loss, no emotional bravery. But I've had that experience: "We make a little history... every time you come around," and "We talk about it all night night long, and we define our moral ground, but when I crawl into your arms, everything comes tumbling down." I guess it's more of a modern concern, although its surely always happened. Love tears you an extra arse, and you are left there crying, saying, thankyou great spirit. And although everything must end, you have to carry on.
@cathtastrophe8
@cathtastrophe8 8 жыл бұрын
Wow. You are absolutely spot on. We make a little history baby,everytime you call around. Falling in love and having it end despite your best efforts to keep it from crumbling down is one of the most painful things to endure but we must as you say pick ourselves up and keep going. I think straight to you is also a great song that he has written about the power of love and our helplessness to it.

I absolutely adore this song and the whole album. Not sure how most Nick Cave fans feel about The Good Son but it has been one of my go to albums since I first heard it. Something so magical and awe-inspiring about it. Mick Harvey's Vibraphone work is astonishing through out. The Bad Seeds may have made greater albums, I can name plenty, but this one stays with me through out the years for reasons which language can not articulate.

People have their own theories about music and lyrics and they are completely entitled to their thoughts and expressing how they feel. To me this song is about love and the love of another felt towards you. It's one of Cave's finest songs and I feel Cave is grossly underrated as a writer of love songs. His thematic style of songwriting puts him in a class by himself.

To reread my own words, it breaks my heart. He, and his death, it is complex, still, just because of the abuse and the fact that he died next to me, in his sleep, and I'm the one who found him. That never leaves you. Besides losing my baby sister, June 2018, I have an amazing life and I am happy, despite my grief. It is a process and I don't know if I can heal the same way, but I am making progress. Much love to you ❤

There's a German band called goethes erben that covered sit of mercy from master cave. I feel same tragedy and compassion of him in others songs of this great German band. Thanks for posting. From Brazil.

The Ship Song Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around Come loose your dogs upon me And let your hair hang down You are a little mystery to me Every time you come around We talk about it all night long We define our moral ground But when I crawl into your arms Everything comes tumbling down Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around Your face has fallen sad now For you know the time is nigh When I must remove your wings And you, you must try to fly Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around - The Ship Song - Come loose your dogs upon me And let your hair hang down You are a little mystery to me Every time you come around

Reminds me of Dylan's "mature" (e.g. 'Blood on the Tracks') period. The repetition, the rhymes, the metaphors.
