Today, or actually yesterday, was 9 months since my husband, John Giakoumakis, passed. I haven't listened to the song since then. I have been in shock this whole time til about a month ago when the pain began hitting, HARD. It was like running into a brick wall. Then I would start singing this song to myself and cry, even writing this I'm tearing up. I want to thank all of you for your kind words and emails. This song means even more to me now because of those of you who comforted me.

I've come to realise that, as perfect as song like this seems to me, it is not universal. Cave is speaking to those who know. My mother doesn't get this song, or songs like "Are you the one that I've been waiting for?" But people like my mother married their sweetheart from their teen years, and they are still married after 50 years. They are not in love, they are family, and they accept that they don't really like each other's personality that much. There is no growth, no loss, no emotional bravery. But I've had that experience: "We make a little history... every time you come around," and "We talk about it all night night long, and we define our moral ground, but when I crawl into your arms, everything comes tumbling down." I guess it's more of a modern concern, although its surely always happened. Love tears you an extra arse, and you are left there crying, saying, thankyou great spirit. And although everything must end, you have to carry on.
@cathtastrophe88 жыл бұрын
Wow. You are absolutely spot on. We make a little history baby,everytime you call around. Falling in love and having it end despite your best efforts to keep it from crumbling down is one of the most painful things to endure but we must as you say pick ourselves up and keep going. I think straight to you is also a great song that he has written about the power of love and our helplessness to it.

People have their own theories about music and lyrics and they are completely entitled to their thoughts and expressing how they feel. To me this song is about love and the love of another felt towards you. It's one of Cave's finest songs and I feel Cave is grossly underrated as a writer of love songs. His thematic style of songwriting puts him in a class by himself.

That never leaves you. Besides losing my baby sister, June 2018, I have an amazing life and I am happy, despite my grief.
