Nick Heyward dressed like the Jam, XTC and Talking Heads. “It’s all about clothes, hair and shoes.” 0154am 7.10.24 i like(d) nick heywood. writer of decent pop songs... as for clobber. i have been mulling it over. i dress like my enemies. the trappings of my own oppression. cocking a snook at the cunts.

I recently saw Haircut 100 in Cleveland and they were fantastic! You could tell how much they enjoyed playing together. They were delightful to talk to at the meet and greet. Looking forward to seeing them again!

Friends of mine used to see Sparks in Beckenham at that time too. They were art students and perhaps caught the eye of Ron and Russell a bit more

Listening to this brings me back to the late 70s and early 80s. I grew up in the same town where Cheap Trick was born, and knowing a couple of the families growing up, they were a link to things outside of the 'hard rock' that was all pervasive in the area. We had ZERO radio for anything from the UK. There was one locally owned record shop that brought NME (and others) into the shop from Chicago. We could special order The Jam, XTC, Echo and The Bunnymen, et. al. as Japanese imports. Quite expensive, but it's real vinyl. Clothing wasn't an option other than jeans and t-shirts. A couple of notable shows were The Police opening for XTC in Madison, WI. 1980 and the very last (I think) show with The Jam in Chicago. Too many others to list. Some time around 1980 a radio staion, WORT(?) of of Madison had the John Peel show on 4 nights a week. That was a massive influence.

Based on the many interviews he has done in the last few years Nick definitely has a great book in him - a 1970s London suburban childhood/youth soundtracked by the pop music of the time. He might not have the time to sit down and write it these days but he could reminisce it all into a digital voice recorder and let a ghost writer sort it out into some order. I hope he will do so some day. Come on Nick do it, you will make money from it!

David is absolutely right about rejected band names sounding ridiculous and yet somehow the ones that are used always sound perfectly fine. Even though they can be equally absurd, if you hear them enough then you don’t even think about it anymore. I mean, how do we say The The without laughing? We don’t because we’ve heard it so much.

Nick Heywood the anti John Wood. That was such a pleasurable listen even though I have absolutely no interest in Haircut 100 he just seems like a really nice guy.

wonder if Nick has forgotten about low rider cover which he used to do in the early days of Haircut 100?

The original xtc with Andrews were mental good. I saw them two nights in the pound club Belfast and they were incredible live. Saw them after he left and they were bland.

Here are a few awful band names: 'Bread', 'Wet Leg' (mentioned in this edition), 'Elbow', 'Future Islands', 'Single Fathers'.
