A throwback to the time that Nick Lowe now humorously refers to as his "brief career as a pop star". A brilliant song from one of the all-time songwriting greats.

I sometimes wonder how so blissful was the 60's & 70's in America. Then I realise that it was the golden period of America. The one which followed after the WW2 in which America accumulated immense wealth so that people in America were easily taken care of and pampered with a wealthy economy. Again it is this blissfulness which later resulted in the troubles.in the American economy. So USA has again become war mongering. What a cycle of world politics.

When he recorded that solo, Bob thought it was a studio run-through, so the engineer could get the correct levels. So he played in a completely over-the-top, go-for-broke way. Then when the track was over and said "OK, I'm ready", Nick responded "you're done! That was IT!"

Regarding the piano part - Nick Had finished the track but asked Bob Andrews of The Rumour to come in and add some piano. Nick played him the track once in control room then Bob went through to record it. Nick said that he wanted to check levels etc and while Bob was getting used to the song and figuring out what to play , Nick asked if he could play all over the keyboard , sometimes loud sometimes soft just to see if the mics were correctly positioned etc. Sure enough Bob did as asked and was just finding his way around the song and playing the first thing that just happened to come upon. He played through once and shouted up to Nick that he was almost ready to record. Nick called back and said 'that's it we got the take'. Bob begged him not to use it but Nick was sure that was the finished take...take 1. If you listen to the track with this in mind it becomes clear what happened. So, they put the warm up, take 1 on the finished track, Bob just warming up, checking levels and working out the song on only his second listen

Found this in a forum: "Nick brought in Chaz Jankel of the Blockheads and let him hear the track in the control room- they chatted about ideas and Nick who was producing sent him down to the studio and said to him that he wasn't much used to mic'ing up piano's so go all over the keyboard at various volumes, chords, runs etc to see if the set up works. Chaz plays it through once and kind of finds his way about the chords and works out what he might play for the recording. After 1 take , Chaz says "how's the levels and we ready to roll?" Nick says 'we are done here' Chaz 'What?' Nick 'that's it, thats the take, finished" Chaz has supposedly been embarrassed by the 'sound check' ever since and wanted to do it 'properly'"

The "Breaking Glass" Nick´s referring to is the David Bowi tune off his "Low" album. Btw, is it The Rumour backing him here? I can spot Bob Andrews ticklin´ the ivories there...
@sea80vicvan
@sea80vicvan 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is the Rumour as the backing band here. Nick didn't have a band of his own then other than Rockpile - whose style wouldn't have fit this song - and he'd produced the first couple of Graham Parker albums, so it was easy to ask the Rumour to play with him on this song.
