It’s obvious that he’s really gorgeous physically, but this is an incredibly intelligent man and that should be acknowledged to the fullest extent. He was only 22 in this interview but he managed to carry on an eloquent, meaningful conversation about a subject that people really respect. It’s pretty extraordinary that someone that age could have so such insight on something like that and that’s extremely impressive. I just love it when beautiful people turn out smart!

Now being around his age in this video (Nick's almost 22 here) and Duran Duran members' age in their beginnings, I begin to realize even more how well spoken they were in such young years, they knew exactly what they were doing and where they wanted to go musically and as a famous band. People often forget Simon was the only one in his early twenties when they began as Duran. Every member, wether they parted or came back to DD, are incredibly talented and intelligent and they were often put aside as the "pretty pinup boys" which is sad. Not only do they look amazing and presented themselves this well they also were and are really good at what they're doing. ❤️❤️❤️

Obviously Nick Rhodes was highly aware of and knew DS. I read a quote from David Sylvian saying something to the effect.. "there appears to be a movement passing through at the moment which we (the band Japan) are being associated with but are not", as he must have been referring to the New Romantic movement and trying to distance the band. Who talks like that?! That's being eloquent, and you can see Nick here has that same well spoken delivery.

Well done interview, Nick! So polite, diplomatic and thoughtful with his responses. I agree with him regarding bands who put on interesting, artistic stage performances versus bands that just get up on a stage and play. If a band plays excellent music, I will go see them play live even if they are just standing on stage playing their instruments with no additional visual performance. However, my favorite concerts are shows that are more like theatrical performances. I like the visual special effects and light shows synced to the music, along with any kind of artistic expression from the band. Especially when the band's artistic expression enhances and gives more meaning to the songs. Also of course when the band's music is danceable, that makes a show even more fun. Which Duran Duran is very good at - both danceable music and performance art. Thank you Nick for staying true to the kind of music you like to create and play! :)

Has anyone in Duran Duran ever admitted to being heavily influenced by Japan (David Sylvian, Mick Karn and co.? It's so obvious, at least to me.
@duchessravenwaves
@duchessravenwaves 9 жыл бұрын
+Steve Steele I don't have an answer but it's just funny to me that you commented this on this video, because there's a person who takes interviews of 80's musicians, makes them into animated GIFs but puts false subtitles on them, and they used these clips to make a fake interview Nick saying that David had once accused him of stealing his look, that they took it to the pit, and there was "quite a bit of bloodshed." I do think so though, as an avid fan of both Japan and DD I think there's definitely an influence, but I've watched a lot of interviews from DD and I've never heard them say anything about Japan. It's interesting what Asko said that Japan was recording Polaroids while DD was doing their first album, because a lot of fans that Japan and DD share often say that DD's first record sounds a lot like Japan. It was their first record, they were young, and as an artist myself, early on in your career, you tend to draw heavily from what's around you until you grow and find your own voice. (Sorry this is long and probably doesn't answer your question...)
@duchessravenwaves
@duchessravenwaves 9 жыл бұрын
I think so...and even with Japan, you can't praise them and then slam DD for ripping them off (not saying anyone was, I just see a lot of people doing this)...Japan did the same thing when they were first starting out. Before they found their voice, their look, their sound, even their names were heavily influenced by The New York Dolls. Marc Bolan was heavily influenced by Bob Dylan when he started out, and Bob Dylan was a total ripoff of Woody Guthrie. That's just how it works. Before those musicians all found their own unique sounds, they were inspired by someone before them, and drew from them for inspiration, heavily at first, and less and less until they found their own voice. All artists do this, whether they admit it or not. (Sorry I can't stop talking I'm really passionate about both DD and Japan)
@duchessravenwaves
@duchessravenwaves 9 жыл бұрын
***** Oh yeah I know, I wasn't accusing anyone here of badmouthing DD, but I have seen it just...around the internet on other videos and stuff. But isn't is brilliant? I'm not fond of contemporary music, and DD is my favorite band too so the fact that their whole point is to stay relevant (and therefore contemporary) I'm always a little scared but...they never let me down. I hope it does well for them. I've not been able to stop listening to it it's absolutely genius.
@csfan65
@csfan65 8 жыл бұрын
I agree, Steve. I think DD were heavily influenced by Japan. They wanted David Sylvian to produce their first album, but he refused. It is very evident that Nick has a lot of the David Sylvian look in his ever changing style. Nick is always changing his look, his hair color, and his wardrobe style, just as David S. did. I think it's great because so few men are willing to do that. I have never heard any DD members mention this in interviews, nor have I ever heard David S. asked anything about DD is his interviews.

Can't be 1984. This has to be early 1986, I'm thinking March or April. Nick refers to Arcadia, Power Station and the film "Back to the Future". Also, Nick had black hair during late 1985/February 1986 for Arcadia. His hair would be a lot shorter and very blonde by October '86 during the "Notorious" album release and promo videos.

When I was in my teens, I wanted to be him ( or "like" him ). I am now in my fifties and still feel the same way. There is something about living true to yourself that is very appealing. Pardon me while I go to the vanity and smudge on a little eyeliner. Wink.

"I DEFINITELY wouldn't have wanted a gold, lame suit." That comment took me out LOL!!! And he responded in such a Nick Rhodes way. He is so pretentious...and I love it!

So sorry , but he looks like he is being incredibly patient with this entire interview - as if he would like to seriously discuss music and perhaps how he develops sound and mood rather than answering all her fluff fashion questions - bless his heart , he looks so happy at the end when the questions are over

I don’t recall ever seeing Nick being interviewed solo from back in the day. He really is quite interesting and very intelligent. Always been a bit mysterious to me, I hope to see more archived chats.

Saw Duran Duran live last month, and Nick wore a GLOW-IN-THE-DARK red/orange suit. Lol, incredible! Anyone else want to cry from missing the 80’s so much? 😂

Today, most people this age barely talk intelligently. With the types of music out now, the personalities. ? Is that what it is ? There isn’t a lot to talk about. It isn’t all about how much trouble you can get into, though it seems that is all music consists of now. A far drop in the wrong direction , if you ask me. And I am a Gen X member.

Wow!!! Nick is being quite Bowie here. And as said below, he was only 22?!!! My God!! What insight and thoughtfulness as a musician and artist and creator! And rather cringe inducing on the part of the interviewer. I would be sweating bullets to not piss him off with dumb questions or to be annoying. I would talk to him about photography. He does photography and I have been taking pictures since I was a teenager. Annie Liebovitz, Robert Frank or Edward Burtynsky. Who does he like? And I think I have been in touch with Nick. SOMEONE was typing me back from Nick Rhodes Little Darling on Google Plus!! I wonder if he moved to FB or Twitter?

Thank you for posting. I can see myself watching this over and over. Also thank Valerie for the comment. Well said. I don't hear any present musician talk with such poise anymore. Now a days, most of them curse all the time for no good reasons. I can see the quality from within him. I do miss the 80s a lot.
