Was a laborer and carpenter’s apprentice for the past 5 years. Quit working for someone else and started my own company, acquired my contractor’s license. Went from making $15 an hour to charging $90 an hour plus materials. The moneys out there if you’re willing to earn it.

The trades are a good place to start, but its true you need to look out for yourself. Some companies just want to chew you up and spit you out and demand another even though the number of skilled tradesmen are in severe decline. I left my last company because I was running into too many foreman that just wanted to break my back as fast as they could to save the company a few bucks. I really need to get my journeyman's license now that I'm with a reliable company with at least decent health insurance that's not a scam.

Trades pay is geographically dependent. Break your back in the south doing the same work as these guys do in Rhode Island for nowhere near the money
@wodensol5000
@wodensol5000 4 ай бұрын
True, but bare in mind cost of living in Rhode island will be far higher than the south. So it can be proportional. With that being said, it depends. I'm from the UK, I used to live in the south east. They more or less pay the same as the rest of the country - regardless of job - yet houses are literally double the price.

@@johnfisher8401Yeah they just pretend to be high rollers by buying those big stupid trucks that they never use to actually haul or tow anything because they are so obsessed with vehicles as a status symbol especially the blacked out lifted big wheel trucks it's so pathetic these grown children and their toy trucks decked out in chrome, such a loser move and we have those losers all over the country I see it here in Illinois everyday so many people driving trucks yet none of them have anything in the bed or in tow they're just driving themselves to the grocery store and such. I know tradesmen include sheet metal workers and the smart ones drive minivans, it fits all their tools and thieves aren't looking for minivans to steal from they're looking to steal tools from work vans and trucks so they don't even bother with minivans it's a smart move.

If you're going into a trade that requires a license, ie HVAC, electrical, plumbing. Make sure the company your going into has their act together and time spent with them will be counted towards you getting a license. Shop around, some pay benefits, pay for education or time spent learning, etc. If you're wanting to go out on your own, look at how the company you work for runs things. It's easy to think all you need to know is your trade, but you need social and administrative skills as well. Doing service tech work helps you learn how to interact with a variety of customers. Read Markup and Profit, a Contractors Guide. It's the tradies Bible as far as I am concerned.

Everyone says go in the trades, but if you're in the UK, it's literally not even worth it. Unless you're in your 50s and have your own company in London, then well done. If you're a plumber in the north of England or Scotland, then you'll be earning 5k above minimum wage after you've paid for the 2 years of zero income you did to train for it within 10 years. You're literally better off driving a van.

True for all of Europe. This advice only holds for the US; I don't think they should preface it that way, but it's the reality of it.
@justinian420
@justinian420 4 ай бұрын
In the US it seems to be highly regional too. Nick always quotes these high incomes for trademen in greater Boston, but it's not like that in other states. I think in Boston the work quality is higher so American guys and their higher quality labor are valued more.

Brits are generally lowered paid though. A British Software Engineer would be lucky to top 70-80k, that’s after a good few years of experience and you’d have to be tied to London in some form. You’re right though and even if you wanted to go into the trades in Britain, good luck trying to get someone to take you on to train you, unless your dad or your dad’s mate has his own business. Even then, if you get trained up, you might be lucky to top 50k/60k with your own business, working every hour. As others have noted though, US trades are regionally dependent and also (from what I understand) dependent on what area you go into, I.E. commercial or residential, new builds, or maintenance on built building etc. This is not to say the trades are bad, just depends on where you are and what you’re doing, but so many people on the internet glorify them and don’t understand the reality. Every tradesman is a millionaire on the internet.

26 years old, made over $100k last year in Texas as a jman electrician. My advice is to travel and rake in that per diem while you're young. The company I'm with has trained me in lots of different things as well. Got a couple certs for free I could probably take to another company and make $45+ an hour. Or, yes, I could eventually do my own thing. Starting out is a lot simpler than you think. Literally just get your apprentice card ($30 fee last I checked) and apply online to apprentice electrician/helper positions. It sucks starting out but just stick with it and ask a lot of questions.

As someone who’s been in a trade for a decade, there’s a ton of pros and a lot of cons of course. Some of which are causing me to start to change course, but that’s a whole other long comment. The good of getting in a good trade is YOU WILL make a ton of money right now and YOU WiLL feel a sense of accomplishment everyday. If you’re in a rut and those two things sound great to you, you should do it. It might not permanently fix your life but it might be a decent place to spend 10 years of limbo

mid-level corporate can be cliche soul-crushing. However, if you're bringing in hard-to-replace skills, especially a stack of skills that complement (like something technical + speaking english well) then you can have solid job security. If you live near the office, and have a lot of WFH, you'll also cut your commute way down, in the trades you're always in traffic. Still, if I had it to do it all over again I'd do manly white collar in oil/gas/mining or some high skilled trade in the merchant marine. The worst part of white collar is the sissy environment/work culture.

I must be a normie zog bug, but the comment about Nick's friends making 200-300K acting like "i'm capped" makes no sense as a complaint. Do either of these two even make that much? What is enough? If they're "millionaires" that's fine. What's wrong with having enough to live your life and enjoy it?

They may be capped at that one job, but no one is ever truly capped. They can make investments and side projects just like nick. Also the lifestyle bs is just that.. bs. You can make 300k and not play the game and keep up with the jones’s. Thats what retards do. Nick seems to be compensating for not being able to work like that so he can prop up his own choices. No hate, but the whole trades thing is a good approach for a very particular type of person in a rough spot. Almost anything else white collar is better if you’re smart and good at it
