Nick Saban and Alabama fell to UGA in the National Championship a month ago after beating that same team in Atlanta for the SEC Championship. In the weeks following the loss Nick Saban has been very vocal about what held Alabama back from finishing the job and winning it all. On Late Kick Live Ep 237 Josh Pate discussed recent comments from Saban directed at some of his younger players who he didn't feel prepared the right way in order to take advantage of opportunities when they finally arrived. How do you feel about coaches publicly calling players out? Will Alabama's young receivers respond positively to this? Let us know what you think in the comments below and be sure to SUBSCRIBE to the channel and CLICK THE BELL for notifications as we bring you multiple live shows per week!

I agree with Coach Saban 110% a starting receiver is one injury away from you starting and you should be preparing like Hellfire for when the opportunity presents itself! That is exactly how Tom Brady got his starting position as quarterback, Drew Bledsoe went down and that was the last time we ever seen of him in New England!! RollTide!

As a Buckeyes fan, this is golden!!! Honesty is the ultimate motivation 💪 Saban is the real deal. My Buckeyes lost to ann arbor this past year and EVERY PLAYER doing mat drills right now knows the score and talk after that lost. Saban is the standard because he hold players accountable! like it or not.

Maybe Bama should train their backups more during the year. Top 2 receivers catch 100 balls, which in itself leads to more chances to get hurt. Most coaches work with the backups too. Saban was crying about his own problems but blaming his players.

I'm a Georgia fan. I have mad, mad respect for the GOAT Saban. And what he has had, that allowed Bama to beat Georgia multiple times over the last few years, is players who did exactly what he asked those guys to do in the natty. Bama beat Georgia in 2017 because Tua rose to the challenge. Bama beat Georgia in 2018 because Hurts, who was benched after 2017, made sure he was ready to save the team. (And he did, dammit.) Bama's injured receivers COULD have allowed these young men the opportunity to join the Georgia Heartbreakers club like those quarterbacks, but they did not rise to the occasion.

Indeed, yr 100% spot-on. It's no different in an office or shop floor environment. Even a couple disgruntled employees can disrupt the attitudes of the whole place and creating a non-productive environment. i.e. "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch" Last years Bama team was plagued with this, and the results were evident in game throughout the season. Saban's "poor me's" comment was just a few games into the season. Not only were the 3 WR's constantly bitch/sob/complaining on twitter, but TE Billingsley (now at Texas) was also a problem, gifted talent that did nothing but run his mouth and look like a chump every time he saw the field. Bama's last class is loaded with bluechip WR's also, so there's early opportunity for the rookies if those called out don't get the very clear message.

that A&M has become both a thorn and a coaching resource to the Alabama players. In 2011, Johnny Football and A&M went into Tuscaloosa beat them for their only loss, but still won the BCS Championship. Coach Saban replayed that game in their weight room until the season to remind his players. This year, A&M won on a Walk Off field goal with a backup quarterback. Again, it served as another "wake up" call to the current Alabama players.

I like it. I agree with it. I've been on here saying for a while now that people have to quit calling these college student-athletes "kids". They're not kids they're adults. If you're old enough to join the military and die in the defense of your country, you're not a kid. Nick laid out the truth for these young men. They can either handle it or they can't, but he can't baby them like they're 10-year-olds. Major D-1 football is grown-ass man business, not kid business. I love it when coaches give players "the real" and don't worry about trying to protect their fragile psyche. That needs to start from a young age. In sports, a person should EARN their playing time. Nothing should be given. If you're not willing to earn it or you can't handle someone telling you what you're doing isn't cutting the mustard, then you shouldn't be out there in the first place! Period!

Especially telling, after one of the early season games’ post conference Saban said to the effect, he (and the coaching staff) need to convince the players to work harder in practices to build strength and conditioning not during the games. The conservation of strength and stamina during the week to better perform on the field. This was a VERY TELLING comment. Nobody picked-up on this. Anyone saying this is whining is dumb, we've seen this before. Saban "whined" about the spread offense and the RPO, then transfer portal, then NIL, etc. And every time he wasn't whining, he was warning us that he was about to use it to keep dominating. This isn't making excuses for the natty, this is him sending a very clear message to current and future Bama players: buy in or get out.

I think Saban's honesty is right on the money, you have got to get better the longer you play, and if your not playing much, then you really have to push yourself to the point of making sure if you have all the talent, then you have to make sure you get every bit of the technique and advice from the coaches',then when your numbers called you step in and make those plays your are supposed to make, and some that people are in awe that you made, but one thing about talent in can't do,is out play preparation and doing the work and pushing past the point regularly! I attended a high school in N.Florida,in the late 80's until 90 won 4 state Championships in a row, No one had ever won 4 in a row,and Couple of bouces of the ball and the first really good team would have made it 5,because they had it too, those teams were loaded with talent, but they also won every game that they met equally good teams in the 3rd or 4th quarter, when the other teams started tiring and running out of gas,We weren't even breathing hard, and that's a fact!!! And the class of 86 should have won the first one but they just hadn't been under the system long enough,Just check out The Suwannee Bulldogs from 87 to 90,there was a lot of real talent on those teams!!! Now coaches can't have Summer camp and do that kind of stuff or the little people with feelings would freak, anyway Saban will be fine!

He really didn’t need that venue to “point them out”… he already did that to them each individually. The key word for Saban has always been (for decades)‘Process’… “Trust in the Process”. Like someone says “You can lead a Horse to water, but it’s up to them to drink it. Furthermore, Saban is also a big student of ‘Psychology’, he’s been studying it since his days at Michigan St, say’s that it’s one of the major keys to his success as a HC. Great work Josh…

Saban did not call out any names, he just said he had three players that did not play to their potential and they did not. I watched the game and when their time had come, they did not step up and do what they needed to do and it cost them a national championship. The three players know who they are and they might not get another shot, so they shot themselves in the foot by not performing as they should have! Saban teaches them to stay focused and ready at all times.

In my opinion, this was the real difference between UGA and Bama this year. Bama had the best players at Qb and Wr, but some of them got hurt. UGA had similar caliber WRs, but they got hurt earlier. Whether out of necessity or design, UGA spread the ball around a lot more than Bama throughout the year. I don’t have the exact stats in front of me, but UGA WRs get like half the catches Bama does, which is one of the reason Burton is leaving. But, this allowed players like Brock Bowers and AD Mitchell to get their time to shine, and I’d say they took it.

Saban was right. Years ago I was a starting Linebacker in HS. WE won the state championship two times. By the time the 4th quarter came around our coach had 9th graders in as linebackers in many games because we were ahead so much. These guys were on average 2 years younger and were smaller because of it. They got their butts hit hard many times. Many mistakes were made that were pointed out that next week by the coach. This was because they did not work as hard as we starters. I do question the location Saban chose to call out those 3 players. As a football player, I never wanted our dirty laundry aired outside the locker room. I can see the lessons that can come from this. AND I agree. Still stay general with the comments in public.

I knew the problems Bama faced this year when Saban publicly scolded Billingsley in the same fashion. I knew doing that early in the season showed he had serious concerns with player buy-in ( I thought I may concern more than just one player). He had a similar problem in 2018 ( I think I have the year right) I believe. It felt to me like he had learned that lesson and wanted to try and get ahead of the problem this past year. It doesn't take many players not buying in to sink a team.

absolutely. I do believe it came mostly down to the 3 players. I have personally seen a single disgruntled player kill a locker room. To have 3 disgruntled players can certainly be disastrous. Saban definitely deserves credit for the ability to hold the team together well enough to make a title appearance. I find it funny that people think staying at the top is easier than getting there. Personally, I believe it is much harder because of the increased talent and egos as Josh pointed out. Having too much talent is a problem for the coaching staff, even though it's a problem they all wish for.

Here’s is the most important word I learned as a young leader in the Army. PREPARE. You must PREPARE for the big dance (as one Sergeant Major put it). Whatever your big dance is, you must PREPARE for it. Hell, even when you are going on a weekend trip, you must prepare to do so. People are not looking at the big picture of what type of message Coach Saban is saying. They are looking at it from a standpoint that he is calling out players. However, he is simply saying that if you do not PREPARE for the big dance, you will fail. If you do not buy into the PROCESS, you will fail. If you do not take responsibility for your actions/behavior, you will fail. The poor play of those players makes it easier for the coaching staff to minimize their opportunities. As we all saw, they can’t be trusted to go out and do their jobs while creating good value for their athletic portfolio for NFL teams to see. I trust Coach Saban and the messages he sends to his team and college football. I believe he has earned that right simply because of the success Alabama football has accomplished since 2007. If any of you are not meeting expectations and are not being held accountable, your leadership has failed. That same leader has lost their power base as a leader. Coach Saban is saying, I will not lose my power base as a leader because I will hold you accountable. He will come at it in different ways to make you understand the PROCESS. If you can’t buy into the PROCESS and fail to PREPARE for the big dance (whatever it is), you will find yourself in the transfer portal or on the sideline watching someone else taking advantage of an opportunity that you had on the biggest stage in college football. Simply put, what did you want or wanted to do but didn’t get it because you failed to properly PREPARE yourself for it? Who should you be mad at? The decision-maker or yourself. I appreciate your content, Josh. Keep it coming. Roll Tide!!!!

Georgia gets top recruits just like Alabama does. The number two are not going to dominate Georgia’s number ones. Georgia’s number ones on the defensive side were elite Alabama lost both of their starting receivers. That makes a difference( especially when Willaims tore into the Georgia secondary in the first game and was injured on a 40 yard play which affects the secondary) Imagine both Waddle and Smith being injured.
